New Grad RN First Job OR or Med/Surg Oncology
Thank you to everyone for you time and responses I appreciate all of your wisdom and advice. I will still be praying about it, but think that the Med/Surg experience is a great place for me to start out and at the age of 39 with 6 years of military experience to have a stable career. Thank you again, I am proud to be a part of a profession that truly cares for people

New Grad RN First Job OR or Med/Surg Oncology
There is not really much overtime in the OR, it is where I capstoned for my last 6 weeks of nursing school. It will be a hard decision for me!!

New Grad RN First Job OR or Med/Surg Oncology
I am asking for any wisdom out there as to if I should work in the OR as I would be trained in all the different areas, or if I should work at the VA on a Med/Surg Oncology unit for my first job? The job at the VA would pay about $10,000 more a year, but include weekends and nights. The OR position would be 4 days a week from 9:00am till 7:30pm, with occasional night call, but not on the weekend. Thanks, Chadk

Jaimeiam, To be honest we have only been in school now for about 4 weeks. We are finishing up with Assessment of Nursing, and have 2 more weeks of Foundations of Nursing. The reading to be honest is manageable, in Foundations we have pretty much had to choose between reading the book or doing the ONLINE EVOLVE modules. It just depends on if you are a visual vs. book person. I would not worry. The work load is manageable, though it does consume your life. The best advice that I have received is to take it one day at a time for the most part. Do what you have to do for the following day, then get caught up on Fridays and the weekend by doing projects or assignments in advance. I hope that this helps!! Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am an Accellerated Option Student for Fall 2010, I am also a male. I was glad during our interview that I was not the only male. I look forward to meeting all of you, pray for me to pass all of my pre-reqs. Really the only pre-req that I am worried about is Chemistry I. I have not had Chemistry since highschool and have not had a math class in about 6 years.

McMurray's Test
Hello, I am a future nursing student who is a certified athletic trainer. The McMurray's test is somewhat accurate, but clinically does give a lot of false positives. To perform the McMurray's I cup the patients heel in one hand with an overhand grip. The other hand is placed over the top of the knee with the thumb and index finger lined up over the medial and lateral joint lines. You then use the hand at the bottom of the ankle/foot to internally and extrenally rotate the knee and flex and extend the knee while maintaining your top hand on the joint line. Feel for clicking along the joint line with internal/externall rotation and flexion and extension of the knee. The test you use valgus or varus force is mainly the valgus/varus knee test to assess for MCL/LCL sprains. I hope that this helps. Chad, MSEd, ATC, LAT, PES (future nurse)
