  1. I think LTC would be better also. I work days and do quite a bit and luckly for me the RNs I work with are great. They are very helpful and really rely on our assessments of the residents since the LPNs are on 24hours (1 LPN per 8 hour shift for 30 residents) and the RNs come once a day for approx 2h/day. Working evenings sounds logically but not possible because of my kids. Well at least I have 7 years to finish :) but don't plan on taking that long. Thanks for the advice

  3. Hi all, I will be starting the BSn program at Athabasca next month and am currently working in LTC. Should I be working in acute care instead while taking my courses? Where would I benefit from the most, especially since it is distance learning also? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  4. I was thinking about that program also. I have heard good things about it, you really have to be dedicated to distance learning and being able to study on your own. Have you started already or are still in school doing the LPN program?

I think you're right. Bayshore advertises 19.00-20.00/hr in Calgary, but only if you are called into work. I don't know what their regular wages would be. I have seen that Carewest offers pretty good wages and benefits, plus shift diff. I called the company in wpg to find out, and the reason they have higher wages is because you are considered a contract nurse, not permanent, and you move around to different sites (in and out of town).
  6. Just wondering how many different nursing jobs it took most of you to work before you found what you really liked and stayed with it. I have been working in long term care since my graduation in Nov 03 and just resigned to work in acute care...well the director of nursing at the LTC facility blasted me for switching jobs and made me feel so bad about leaving. She said that it wasn't professional of me to leave a position so early. After graduation I really wasn't sure what I was really interested in and took the first job that was offered to me.

Hi, Can someone tell me why the wages for LPN's in manitoba are so high--$24.00 - $28.00/hr starting!! This is according to the HRDC website. In Alberta we start at $15.60/hr, depending on the agency it could be up to $16.00/hr. How about other provinces?? Maybe it's time to move back....
  9. Hi, I just recently finished the PN program in Alberta and wrote the Licensing exam in this month. If you order the PN Exam Guide from Assessment Strategies it will be very helpful (the link to the website should be on the CLPN website for your province). The exam is really testing critical thinking more then anything else. I have to wait 6 weeks for my grade and its going to be a long 6 weeks. :) Hope this helps.
