  1. Does a Lieutenant or Captain have to be present before the cell door is opened? When can the nurse enter?
  2. Do you start IV's on inmates?

If you do start IV's, how often and for what reasons?
  3. What do you call your maximum security area? Do you run sick line there or is that something only the PA's or physicians do?
  4. Is this something you have ever witnessed? Who would you report it to? Could there be retaliation against you if you did report it?
  5. I have applied as an RN to a prison in Toledo, Ohio. They used to use Correctional Medical Services then recently switched to Maxim. I wonder why they changed and how they are to work for.

Thanks DEYO321, That clarifies the terms.
  15. help with job transform

I am always happy to see new nurses come to work in OR. We need young nurses to replace us oldies when we retire. I worked 8 years as Lpn- Med/Surg, Pediatrics. Then got my RN and went immediately to OR. 27 years later I'm still there. THe new RN's w...
  16. I'm not a corrections nurse YET, but I hope to be soon. I have not worked in ER either but I can see some similarities in both as you both have stated. There are differences too. My background is OR and I've seen the results of what harm people can d...
  17. We are trained our entire career as nurses to respond immediately so chance of survival is optimum but prison is a whole different ballgame. Safety for the patient but also SAFETY for everybody else too.
  18. Also, what type of patients are put there?
  19. How often do you check on inmates that are on suicide watch?
  20. Strip searches?

Deyo321, Is an unclothed search different from a strip search or is unclothed a better term than strip? Or is there a clothed search? If there is , does the nurse have any involvement with it? Thanks
  21. How would you say officers in maximum security areas any different from those in the rest of the prison? Are they more highly trained? More physically fit? Carry more protective devices? etc
  22. Dress code in the observation cells?

Thanks Jaila. You are so right about the ones who don't say or do anything to let others know they are suicidal. They have already made up their mind that life isn't worth living. I had a friend that seemed to be improving from her depression and wa...
  23. When an inmate goes into an observation cell, how much of their clothing do they have? If none or very little, how do they get their clothes back?
  24. It sounds like nurses and security can observe the patient constantly. Can the patient also see out of his room to what is going on in the infirmary? Do they have a call button to summon nursing or security for any reason?
  25. Correctional/Nursing Associations

Thanks Steristripqueen. I knew about the ACA and NCCHC but I hadn't found the corrections.com site. I have it bookmarked now.
