  1. I was looking into strike nursing as a Google search, and this thread came up. Strange times. I understand why people strike. Not everyone has a union available. I can understand why organizing would be a fearful task. Honestly, most of the places I've worked have been ok without a union. I get that some places need them to protect the profession. But if I need work, and some other state has a strike and I can go, I will. Why you strike, and how long it drags on is not my concern. I dont care what youre fighting about. Yes, hospitals should deal with your union more reasonably. Yes, they should pay you more. Yes, they should have shipped all the patients to another facility, so that you and your colleagues can picket in front of an empty hospital without pay. That'll show 'em. But they didnt. But none of that is my concern. And I'm available. I'm coming to make money. Your patients will receive great care, and I'll make out like a bandit. Your name-calling doesnt effect me in the slightest. Your picket lines dont effect me. Im not scared of any of you. I will step through, over, or on you to do your job. Chew that over for a while while I pack my bags to come to your town.
  2. I dont see how an insurance would detract from your quality of care as a nurse. Any kind of protection would be welcomed.
  3. Its good to see some dialogue about the subject. I would like to see some compensation for nurses who are in this position. The hospitals receive compensation, but may cancel at anytime and we have no recourse. Unfortunately, travel nurses have no bargaining power as individuals. What about reasonable expectation? If you relocate and finish an orientation, there is reasonable expectation that the garaunteed work hours will be made available.
  4. Cataracts=contracts. Thank you swype...
  5. what's the secret to getting a group of cataracts in the same area? Save recruiter or company for everyone? They're are 2 of us and its hard! Maybe in biggerr markets its a little easier.
  6. I know its a rant, but I have never canceled a contact. But you can bet every contract I've come across has no less than 3 clauses about the money owed by the nurse for canceling under different scenarios. Where are the clauses for our protection? I love to travel, and I understand companies are out for profit, but I'm sick of feeling like the companies are doing me a favor by giving employment and making sure they can institute practices that they themselves protect against such as loss of profit dt cancellation.
  7. Hi all- The fiance and myself are travelers, and came to Phoenix from Sacramento after she accepted a job from Banner. They set up housing, but would not allow us to move in until the day her orientation started (a different rant altogether). She passed all the pre requisite testing and has been in orientation for 9 days and finished Friday morning. Friday afternoon at 1630 she gets a call from staffing telling her that the census has dropped and they are canceling her contact! This was a travel position through Banner's travel staffing department, not a third-party agency. I am so frustrated! If they had canceled before we came here it wouldn't be so bad, but how could they have her complete orientation and not know about the census?! And a call at 1630 on a Friday?! Shame on you Banner.
  8. it doesnt always take that long. i can tell you how it worked for me. saw it on usa jobs and called the hr department of the facility directly. though the job description said to send the app to new orleans, they told me just to bring it in to them. that alone saves a few weeks. they interviewed me within 1 week and offered the job as i drove home from the interview. that being said, the background check and credentialing verification took about 2 weeks, mostly because i didnt have any professional references (new grad lpn). in the end they accepted my instructors as references. so all told, about 1 month from app to orientation. id like to think it was because i interview well, but more likely they needed someone badly. i went to a medsurg floor btw, but was considered for cardiac also. point being they consider lpns for a few different scenarios. im a rn now and still at the same floor. good times. not sure if this holds for every facility, but it does for at least one! also, they should be posting jobs somewhere in the facility. not sure if they are open to the public, but might be worth a look. not everything may be on usa jobs. good luck.
