Do all new nurses get night shift?
Hey there congrats for almost being finished with nursing school. Iam a new nurse passed boards JULY 2009 Well I was just like you didnt want to work nights. I'am a day person.. I also plan on getting my BSN and MSN by age 27 I'm 23 now. WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO WORK WEEKENDS????? When I went to my interview I was expecting nights but NM offered me a weekender option where I would have to come in EVERY Friday, Saturaday, Sunday 7AM-7PM I'll have every night off and will have MON TUES WED THUR OFF EVERYWEEK of the year. I figure I will miss out on some weedings and family gatherings, etc but whats the chances of me working that weekend anyway;for, if I were to chose nights at my hospital every nurse is required to work every other weekend Anyway!!! I can ask for a SAT in advance if I'm notified earlier enough. I feel this is great for me I'm Single with NO children. Its just me and my career to focus on Mon- Thursday. Now if I was a wife and a mother I may feel alittle different about weekends. For I believe family time cant be given back and I think no career should come before a family.( husbands and kids usually off on weekends). With just a husband though( I collected from your post you may could work weekends).... SO just ask if they have a weekend position if your interested because many people hate working weekends.. I have friends that got 7am-7pm week with every other weekend but they were in unfavorable specialities that I didnt want to work. I wanted NICU :heartbeat It has low turnover rate so I knew I would have to compromise and in a year I'll put in a LETTER to request a day position job during the week if one comes avaiable and I'm applicable. Remember that somethings are not at all what they seem and even if you have to work nights you may like it. If not you just have to build up seniority and put a letter in for a shift change if necessary. Remember happiness comes from within so you have that power..

NICU Nurse?? working only weekends advice....
Just wanted to say thanks to all who took out time to give advice :heartbeat I know that the biggest problem of working weekends is that everyone else is off. But I was given the option between weekends and nights. With nights everybody is sleep. I'm 23 and i feel my body will appreciate it more if I chose weekend eventhough my social life may suffer. I thought if I chose to work nights I will still have to work every other weekend and whats the chance of that wedding, bbq , family gathering occuring on my weekend to work eventhough I'll be off work during the day (because of working nights) I know my body will make me suffer long term. I'm going to talk to mananger about time off for weekenders and see what its like. much love to all :redbeathe:redbeathe NM told me if weekends didnt work out I can go to nights. So I guess I'll have to wear the hat and see if it fits

NICU Nurse?? working only weekends advice....
Hello, I would like to start off by saying Im very appreciative of this site. I have been through alot since becoming an RN in JULY 2009... Iam officially a NICU:heartbeat nurse at a level 3 hospital and was wondering if anyone have any suggestions or advice for me going into this field as a newbie ALso I will be a weekender working Friday, Saturaday, and Sunday from 7am-7pm. I just didn't think my body would fit well with nights . I like to rise with the sun and go down when it does also... Anyone ever work weekends and can give advice I really would appreciate it. I am single and have no kids I also don't go to clubs and party. I'll be off work so by 730 pm I still would have time to go out to eat with friends and catch a movie if I want maybe even run by the mall... In Nicu we come and leave in our own clothing so I can get all dolled up before leaving work. The only thing I would miss is church on Sunday, but I will be doing work unto the Lord and I will be able to go to bible study on Wednesday night. I'll be off work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I just couldnt pass up the offer.(and I wont have to spend days catching up on sleep because I'll be on the hours my body is use to) So what did you find most difficult about working weekends Thanks to all, much blessings and love are on the way..:heartbeat:heartbeat:heartbeat

I need YOUR help/advice
Thanks ChristyRN2009, I appeciate your advice thats what bothers me so I always think the worse possible outcomes. I wish I would have listed them on my job application but it was/is too late, for I didn't think they were going to call me into an interview so soon or at all. Guess I'll have to keep moving and try to stay positives.. PROBLEM I hate liars and I cringe at the thought of being called one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Excuse my ignorance whats a vendetta?

I need YOUR help/advice
Hello everyone. I'm very nervous about asking this but here goes.. The Background I recently interviewed at a hospital and was pretty much hired on the spot. I was asked to come give a drug and background (fingerprint) screen, and to take my photo id yesterday. The Problem During my interview the NM didn't ask about any previous employment, so I felt it wasn't important and I just didn't bring it up. However, I left my previous employer (different hospital) about 2 weeks ago after being there only 2.5 weeks (It wasn't working out) I was still on probation (can leave hospital within 90 days of orientation). Last night I realized this employer isn't listed on my application (completed application before began last job) Good news Me and My last employer left on good terms and I left on protocol so if this does happen to show up I really have nothing to worry about. I"M WORRIED and wondering if maybe I should just go ahead and call NM however it may look as though I really don't want this job for I cant see way it would interfer at this point or change the outcome of me getting the job. OR should I just move on and if it comes up explain the reasoning. Anybody ever been through something like this or can anyone offer advice. I surely will appreciate it. Do these kind of things show up on background checks??? P.S I wonder if I should even put the 1st employer the one I stayed with only 2.5 weeks anyway on my application for I wasn't technically operationg on my own?

Is it hard to find a job after Nursing school?
I think you have to be patience and have faith. I'm a recent May grad and I had no problem getting one neither did any of my classmates. However, I did feed into that whole idea of "what if's" and grabbed the first one that was offered and it is torture I'm trying to get out. I was recently offered another position that I wanted all along. So just be patient and if you're still in nursing school see if you can volunteer, work as a nursing student, to get your foot in the door this always seems to help. Also alot of my classmates had contracts with hospitals that had paid their way through nursing school and was almost guranteed a spot since the hospital had already invested money in them.

Quit in orientation
hello to all... I'm a recent RN of 07-07-09 Well first off let me say this is a wonderful site and I look forward to chatting with each and everyone.. Here goes : I hate my job it is worst thing I could ever imagine. I was so in a rush to get a job when I got out of school I just grabbed it and ran, I know it is not for me. I was feeding into the nursing shortage and you'll never get a NICU/ nursery job as a new grad thing. well I was offered a position and now I'm ready to leave the job I'm orientating with. Its more than my dream job ,the times are great, the hospital is great (my first choice), the staff, and its a critical care unit which demends great skills and knowledge, I won't have to worry about getting pulled for its a specility unit, The Beneifits and Retirement is great, and I think this is what GOD meant for me to have all the time. Now I know that its not going to be perfect. But on the current job its gossip, getting canceled for work (low census), backstabbing, bad hours, etc.... The problem. I have no idea how I should go about quiting. Should I let the NM know of my recent job offer, or just simply tell her it isn't working out and I'm not a good fit. I probably would be told to leave stat since I still have about 2 weeks left in orientation so they won't waste anymore money on me. Good thing is they won't be shortstaffed for I'm not counted in the staff as of yet. I know most are going to say I should be thankful to even have a job in this economy. But honestly I rather be without a job then go through the torture of staying there. P.S. My nurse manager recently pulled me into her office stating that if I leave I will make them look bad. But this is my career and if I stay I feel I would make themlook bad, because there is somewhere else I rather be.
