Thank you for the response. To clarify, it was another manager from a different unit that emailed me back for an interview. She basically said that she will interview me once the posting is down. However, i am not sure if she checked my status with HR. I was told by my old manager that if I resign, I can possibly reapply after several years. And since I had a full time offer elsewhere, I did the resignation. She was later fired because of the bullying that happened on the unit (unrelated to my situation but suggestive of the unit culture and her character). I never learned about what HR had on my file related to my orientation as my manager at the time made it as if it was a top secret. When I contacted them, they basically said since I'm not a current employee, they can't disclose any information . Guess it's all a waiting game at this point. If I don't hear back for an interview, it would be safe to assume my hire status lol

Hi guys, I have a question about rehiring. I was a new nurse three years ago and worked at a regional centre icu. I was very fresh and struggled through orientation. The manager and I met several times throughout and I am sure they had a paper trail against my performance from my preceptor. Eventually my old unit at another hospital offered me a full time job and I resigned from the icu job 6 months after I started. At our final meeting, my manager told me I needed more time and she said I can always reapply to work here once i gain more experiences. I stayed on my old unit for three years after now I'm looking for another job to build my skills set i now applied for a part time job at the regional hospital (different unit and speciality). The manager emailed me back right away saying she will offer me an interview as my skills set met the job description perfectly. Now I'm not sure what my actual rehire status with HR is since that manager of the unit got fired several months after I left(heard it was related to unit culture). I tried contacting HR but they said they can't disclose that info. My final letter from the manager stated that they had extended my orientation but unfortarely it wasn't the right fit. Anyone had similiar experiences? thanks

couple of things - The new hospital only hire nurses once every three months, I won't make it to the next orientation if I don't make it to this one. This is a big hospital with a year long training program and they pretty much only takes new grad to train them the "ICU way". I was the only one in this intake with some ICU experience I started on my current unit as a new grad with a state funded program. They never paid anything to train me, after that I was offered part time. And yes she failed big time on retaining staff. She was only interested in offering experienced nurses from other hospital full time, all the new staff the unit trained had left. She even said she wants me to do a learning plan before offering me full time (after months being off orientation) this plan isnt shared with the educator, does not change my patient assignment to the higher acuity pt. I will check with HR but it is what it is. Four weeks is a long time - esp in a hospital setting.

when I gave her the two weeks notice in writing, she was well aware that I am resigning in two weeks. Only when the staffing issues hit, then boom, I need a 4 weeks notice. And I can't push my start date as the hospital orientation week is a set date. Ideally I don't like to burn any bridges, but I can't make pretty with a part time job while a full time job wait for me to start. And technically I would only need 3 shifts to be covered before July since I am working only PT.

So long rant..I currently work in a level II ICU as a PT, however there were no FT opportunity on the unit so I was fortunate to find a ft position in a level III ICU in another city. As soon as I got the official paperwork, I talked to my manager and gave my two weeks notice as the new unit wants me on orientation in two weeks. I still very much so like my unit and worked well with the team, therefore I told her I would like to stay on as a causal staff. I have been trying to find someone to cover my shifts with no luck so far, so I emailed my manager and she told me to I need to give 4 weeks notice and "let the hospital know you will start in next month instead". I have never heard of this and anyone with a brain know that there is no way to tamper with a new job like that.

Thanks, I talked w/ the family and its mostly ambulatory to the bathroom during nights. I can even sleep during shift, but they are paying $10/hr (less than min. wage in our province). So it might not worked out, it also depends on the hour as I am still in school until june

Hi all, I am currently in a nursing program and looking for a job in the summer. I posted a ad offering elderly care/nursing aide/psw and got a reply from a lady who is looking for some care for her mom at night in a hospital. I am expected to talk to her tomorrow. I am a little bit lost as to what I should be expecting? Since its at night, I don't think its gonna be a lot of care but more providing companions? Can anyone (esp students) shed me some light? I have done my fair share of geri placements but not as a personal worker for a specific patient (how do we coordinate care w/ the floor nurse?). Thanks!!

Hi, I will be graduating from my undergrad this year and was accepted to a public admin program and a really well established 2nd entry nursing program (2 yrs). While my undergrad is in health science, I am not sure if I will enjoy some of the routine tasks of nursing or the long hours associated with it. I do enjoy some opportunities that nurses can get into (ie health educator, public health etc) but these usually don't come until I got some yrs of exps. There are also some specialties where I can see myself enjoying. On the other hand, I was also accepted into a public admin program (which I like the courses structure and it offered co-op, although its a new program) but I just heard that the Canadian gov't is cutting over 30,000 jobs over the next few yrs so I am not sure which path to take, I def. would like the job security. The other thing is that the public admin is at graduate school level but the nursing program is another undergrad, which might not be a big deal for some people but I am not sure how I am feeling about this. I appreciate your input. Thanks!

hey guys I received an offer from UofT nursing this wk but I am not sure if I am gonna take it since I am done my degree this month and have gotten another grad school offer. not sure if I wanna do another undergrad so I am still debating..haha

Hi, I am sure many of you has read the thread about a nursing students expelled from school because she posted a picture of her with a patient`s placenta and uploaded it on facebook. Our ethics prof has required us to write a short paper on it. The topic is if you think the measures taken in this case were appropriate? Why or why not? I have been trying to come up with a legitmate argument all day. Since I am not supposed to discuss any idea from the legal prescriptive, all I could think of is that the nurse did not get any informed consent when she took the picture, and therefore has violated the patient`s right to privacy(from a normative ethics prospective). I am starting to think my argument is seriously flawed considering the placenta is an unidentified organ. So right now I am clueless and need some ideas as to how to approach this from the consent and privacy issue. Thanks!

Hi, I just got an interview with VON as a support worker. And I am a health science student. It says on my job duty that I will be providing support to children with disabilities and will be matched on a part time contracted basis. So I guess this is similar to being a personal support worker? I didn't really expected a reply when I applied. Is this a good beginner job as a Health Sci student? Thanks for the advice.

Oh, I have the average, a pretty good references and some relevant volunteering experiences. I just haven't finish my degree yet, and I don't really wanted to spend another 2 years at western. I guess I will at least give the pre-req a try this year and see how it goes. How is the nursing program at UofT? in terms of course load and material. Thanks

Hi there. I am a Health science student at UWO. I will be going into 2nd year this year and I am thinking of applying to the 2nd entry program at York or UofT. I know they prefer people who already have a degree. But do anyone in the programs know how many younger students they will accept? I really need to get into nursing next year because I hate my current program and the faculity I am at offers no help to me at all. I can not imagaine me getting a degree from there anymore. I did some research for nursing, and I realize nursing would be more suitable for me than health science. Right now I am trying to get my pre-req required to fit into my timetable(uwo won't even let me register in courses right now and none of the staff wants to help me at all) , and I am also doing some volunteer work at canadian blood service. What gpa do I need in order to be competitive?
