  1. Sorry I meant.. You aren't considered full time status (or staff full time). You are a traveler.
  2. So here is the story in a nutshell. I am an experienced nurse. 1 year on the floor and 1.5 years in the ER. I acquired a large amount of debt becoming a nurse. I do not want to be a nurse anymore but I must continue in order to pay my debts. The ER is wearing me down and I am burnt out. I prefer a more flexible schedule with the ability to take a week or so off at a time without being told I can't. I am currently researching an alternate career and how I can accomplish that but in the meantime I must continue nursing. I have the opportunity to take a per diem position at the same hospital I am at or I can choose to stay in the ER until I have 2 years experience so I can become a travel nurse. Here are my concerns: Will I enjoy travel nursing or will it be stressful as far as not knowing anyone or what I am doing? Will the per diem stuff get me enough hours to pay my bills or will I constantly be worried about getting canceled? Either way I cannot stay staff because I will never get my bills paid. (I work in Florida and make only 24.30 per hour) Help!! I am not relying on anyone else's decision but I would like some input as far as per diem veterans and travelers.
  3. LadyFree28, I tried to PM but it says you are full. Here is what I sent you. I just wanted to thank you for your input re: my post about my dislike of nursing and wishing to return to the travel industry. I know that a "travel agent" is a dying breed which is one of the reasons I entered nursing. In fact, I was going to work as an agent through nursing school but the agency went out of business 1 week before I started nursing school. I had to sit down and think "When was I truly happy at work" and every example I came up with went back to my travel career. I love sharing my expertise of destinations with people and I truly feel good about myself when I can help someone have the trip of a lifetime. I feel more satisfied doing this then "healing" someone in my nursing career. I know that sounds terrible but it is true. I had an idea of either doing travel nursing or per diem nursing so I can focus back on the travel stuff. This is my current goal. Any ideas or advice? I have felt alot better since I have come up with a plan. Thanks again for listening. Lisa
  4. I currently work a perm full time position. Most travel companies I see want 2 years full time experience. If I decide to do per diem first, will that make it difficult for me to be a traveler if they only see recent per diem experience? Also, in traveling you are not full time. What if you decide to switch companies? Technically you don't have recent full time experience. Does this matter?
  5. I am so glad I found this post. In my eyes, the people who agreed with this post are the most honest, decent people out there. It is not easy to admit that you hate nursing. I recently vocalized this to my friends and husband a few weeks ago and since then, I have felt much better. I did not like nursing from the start but it is so admired and glamorized by those that do not know. It is very hard to tell your friends and family that you are quitting nursing school after everyone has told you how proud they are and how well off you will be. Nursing has made me physically and mentally sick, tired, stressed and I can feel my body aging.... and I have only been a nurse for 3 years. I have done some heavy soul searching to come to the realization that money, status and power are meaningless and nursing is worthless if it does not make you happy. I know that it is impossible for everyone to love their job but to despise it, and to blame it for making you sick, calls for a change. I am not ashamed to say that I hate nursing and I do not want to be a nurse. I am too responsible to drop it immediately because I have bills to pay, etc. I plan to do some travel nursing to increase my income to pay off my debts and maybe enjoy this great country in the meantime. I do not believe the grass is greener with another specialty, hospital, state, etc. Money is not everything. You only live this life once. Why not make the best of it ??
  6. Hello all. This email is going to be painfully honest so if you can't handle honesty, read no further. I am planning to be a travel nurse. I have almost 3 years experience as a nurse, 2 of which are in the ER. I have BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC. I don't really like the ER but I guess I can tolerate it. I have the option to transfer to an OR internship program which would mean I would have to sign a 2 year contract with the hospital, delaying my plans to travel. I don't have a great interest in the OR, I just am really getting burnt out in the ER. My husband is also a nurse but only has 6 months experience on a cardiac step down unit. He will either wait it out another year and a half or try to get into ICU and get 2 years experience in that before he travels. Therefore, if I stick with ER I will start traveling before him. Here comes the bad part. I don't really want to be a nurse at all. I am only continuing so I can pay for the extravagant amount of debt I racked up becoming a nurse. It is making me sick, tired, stressed and I feel myself aging. I love to travel and used to work in the travel industry which I hope to re enter. Unfortunately I must be responsible and pay my debt first. What should I do? Tolerate the ED and travel in it for a few years until I am more financially stable or transfer to the OR, learn a whole new specialty, and wait for my husband. If you are going to criticize then I don't need a response from you. I am just an honest person looking for an honest answer.
  7. Thanks!! This helps a lot.
  8. Hello. I work in an emergency department that sees mostly adults but we get pediatrics on occasion. I wanted to know which meds are most common for peds in the ER, specifically the ones I should administer with caution. (I know all meds should be administered with caution) Thanks.
  9. Thank you everyone! This really helps. I think I will continue to build my experience in the ER. I have the opportunity to get my CEN and TNCC and maybe even transfer to a level one trauma center before I begin travelling. Your responses helped put my mind at ease. Thanks again!
  10. Hello. I am a current nurse working on my first year in the ER. Previously I worked on the floor for one year. My husband will be graduating nursing school and we would like to travel together after he obtains some experience. My question was... I like ER but have always been interested in OR as well. I even did some shadowing in the OR to confirm my interest. Would it be better for me to just stay in the ER and be more experienced in one specialty or get my 2 years in the ER and transfer to OR and get 2 years there that way I can travel with both specialties? Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks for the input.
  11. Hello everyone. I had a quick question about this thread. Everyone is focusing on the clinical hours from school. Does this include if you are already practicing as a RN in the states? Seems silly that you are an experienced nurse longer than the length of your schooling but you still need a certain # of clinical hours. Is everyone here speaking of going right from school to the UK or do all of you have experience in the US? Thanks. Lisa
  12. Hello. I am in my final semester of RN-BSN and have to write my Capstone paper on an ethical issue in nursing. I really want to tie in Animal Assisted Therapy but I am having a hard time figuring out how to fit this in with nursing ethics. Can anyone help? Thanks.
  13. Hello. I am an American looking for advice about relocating to Canada. My husband may take a job with Cirque Du Soleil in Quebec. Problem is I am a registered nurse. I know that I cannot practice nursing in Quebec without being fluent in French. What would be the next closest place for me to work as a nurse? Is there such a place that is right on the border between the US and Canada that I may look in to? If I wanted to work as a nurse in Canada other than in Quebec, what is the process? Thanks for your help. Liser79
  14. Memphis Tiger, We are also doing long distance and commuting back and forth. He and the dog stay in Boston and I am in Florida. Since I only work 3 days per week it is easiest for me to fly up there whenever I can to see them. He comes to visit me when he gets his week vacations. He is eventually going to come to Orlando but in the meantime it is best for us to make things work this way. I would have never succeeded with getting a job in Boston. I think maybe if you want to end up in Boston with him, stay in Memphis for now and get at least one year of nursing experience then try your chances in Boston. Good luck!!
  15. Hello. I am a BSN student looking for some examples of your organization's theoretical/conceptual framework. I need to compare and contrast in a short essay. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  16. Hello. I am a BSN student looking for some examples of your organization's or university's theoretical/conceptual framework. I need to compare and contrast a few for a short essay. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
  17. Don't do it. I went to school in Orlando and moved to Boston with my husband. I graduated in May 2010 and applied for thousands of jobs and never even got an interview. I also work as a tech at an ED on the North Shore of Boston and work with at least 5 others who have a BSN and cannot find a nursing job. I decided to move back to Orlando and got a job within a week. I would strongly advise against Boston. Especially if you have connections in Memphis.
