Remember that Texas also does not have state tax, so you will only be paying feds, mdcr, ss ect. I lived and worked in Corpus Christi for 8 yrs, but I had to leave. I became allergic to Mesquite and it is everywhere there!!

Rn coder or case management?
Coding from home is possible. There are several agencies that offer home based coding position. As a new coder I would not recommend it. Coding can be subjective and it takes time to understand the rules and regs and the subtle shadings of compliance. This is easier to do around other coders. It can be done at home if you have support network and resources to help you. I still often bounce scenarios off on other coders to be sure I am still on the right track. A big part is networking and debating with other coders. You may want to begin reading the Decision Health Part B list serv. It is free, but I warn you now it is also prolific. You may want to open a separate email for such list servs. They can be very helpful, especially in the beginning

Do you bring your laptop to class/lecture?
I have a tablet PC, but I found it too cumbersome with all my books too. I switched to the livescribe pen & notebooks. They work great. They are dicreet and everything backs up to my pc. I am able to review my notes by listening to the lecture while doing menial things like laundry. It is a real time saver for me! It also helps me to share my notes with my classmates. If you miss a word in your notes, just leave it blank. Listen to it later and fill it in. You will never miss another word.

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
I have a "smartpen" from Livescribe. I bought it at Target. If you have AAA, you can get a 10% discount ordering on line. I absolutely love it and have been using it for a year now. You can listen to the lectures and upload your notes to keep them electronically. Some professors do not allow you to record them, but this is so discreet noone even notices. THe sound quality is great. It is a great tool, especially when your eyes are crossed and you can not read another page!!

Caring for Jehovah's witnesses
I am a JW and a nursing student. I also personally faced the issue of blood in my high risk twin pregnancy and delivery. There are blood-less medicine hospitals (such as Englewood in NJ), but not in every area of the country. They are not run by JW's, but many JW's do work there. There are many people other than JW's choose bloodless medical treatment as well. All of this comes down to education on both sides, the patients and the practitioners. JW's do not take PRC, Plasma or Platelets, however the fractions are up to the patient's individual conscience. JW's are regularly informed about how to properly identify themselves and to work with their doctors in advance. This is to allow the physicians and hospital to be able to agree to the requested treatments or not. There is a liason committee to work with the local physicians and hospitals. Unfortunately as RN's you are left with the decisions of the physician and hospitals. It is sometimes difficult to go with a patient's wishes if you are trained in a different way and JW's are aware of that too. THey want to live and will accept other medical treatment, procedures and medications. Many methods have been improved to provide bloodless medicine treatments successfully. They are aware of the risks of their decisions and do appreciate your diligent efforts in their behalf while respecting their wishes.

Rn coder or case management?
I am a CPC working towards my RN. This was a natural progession. I have a strong backround in compliance. An RN licence will open more opportunities for me. I currently have my own business and perform mandated audits for the NY & NJ state board of medical examiners for sanctioned practitioners. It does help to have clinical in this area, plus I could charge more then. I have 23 years experience in billing/coding, but as an RN you could take the home study course from AAPC and do well. AAPC is well recognized in the outpatient setting and with most Insurance Carriers. An RN CPC is in great demand right now, there are not many that have both. Best wishes.
