Sprott-Shaw..DO or don't?
I went to Sprott-Shaw for my Pharmacy Technician diploma and I got screwed. I graduated with honors which is all fine and dandy but it was next to impossible to get a job cause SS's courses aren't recognized anywhere. I have a family friend who is doing her LPN through SS and its not going to be pretty when she graduates. SS is NOT recognized by the Canadian LPN people and they won't let you write the licensing exam unless you have a few years of experience under your belt. So she has to work as a nursing assistant before she can get licensed which is a huge waste of time. My advice, avoid SS like the plague. Sure you can fast track your course but its not worth it in the long run because its not recognized and its impossible to get a job. I'm living proof. Look for a recognized college for LPN so you can write the licensing exam once you graduate. A list of recognized schools can be found at any College of Licensed Practical Nurses. You just need to find the one that's in your province, ie B.C.. Best of luck!

Any Deaf, Hard of hearing Nurses?
Hello. I had CICs in both ears for years and I can empathize. When it comes to the phone, I found that the flatter the phone, the less feedback. My RaZor cellphone has changed my life! I never had a problem with headphones with my CICs, in fact they were easier to use than my current BTE. To overcome my 'deficiet', I just lived my life my way and acted lke my hearing was never a concern. Its like wearing glasses, you put them in and go about your day. I found that that does more to put people at ease, seeing you function normally with hearing aids, than any amount of explaining did.

Any Deaf, Hard of hearing Nurses?
Hello. HOH nursing student here. It's great to hear that others are out there cause its quite lonely and my fellow HOH folks are seniors. Ah, the stories I could tell about being the audiologist office! I'm looking at E Stethoscopes. Are they worth it? I wear BTE hearing aids in both ears (affectionately known as my 'ears'). I'm lucky because my husband and my families are behind me 100% and that makes a huge difference. Also, my College has taken steps to help me succeed. What is clinical practice like? I'm nervous about my clinical placements due to prejudice and discrimination but I suppose I'll do what I've done all my life, go in with both barrels blazing and get it done. I'm just so happy to see others in the profession succeed with hearing loss. Thanks everyone for inspiring me to know I can do this.

HOH and just accepted to nursing school!
Congrats. I'm also HOH but its getting worse...that's a whole other blog tho. I'm starting my LPN program this August and my school has been super supportive. They have a Deaf and HOH specialist to help you out. My concern, as my hearing gets worse, is that sethoscopes might become a problem. Any advice? To other HOH people, don't let it stand in your way. I've been HOH progressing to deaf for 22 years and I've accomplished everything I've wanted to do (except join the Army lol). If you treat is as nothing, like wearing a pair of glasses, others won't treat it as something. I guess what I'm trying to say, is wear your 'ears' with pride and others will fall in line. Good luck!
