  1. This is a little OT, but once you find the cervix, how do you tell how many cm she is? I've always wondered this. When I graduate, I would like to work in L&D.
  2. I will finish all of my pre-reques by May, and I will be taking the enterance exam in July. I want to know from those of you who have taken it if it's very hard, and what kind of material is in it, and what was the worst part of it. I plan on getting a study guide also. My school only bases your admission on this enterance exam (very scary!!)
  3. I am an egg donor and I am currently in the beginning stages of the cycle. I just got my blood test results back and it shows that I am a carrier of the Cystic Fibrosis gene. I'm just wondering how this will affect my ability to donate my eggs. I'm assuming that if the reciepients husband is not a carrier than the future child will be fine, right? I'm not to sure how this gene thing works. If the husband is a carrier and I am a carrier, than the child has a 50/50 chance of getting the disease????? I'm a little nervous about all of this now. I don't want to bring a child into this world that is sick. I told my husband to get tested because we have a 2 year old son. I want to make sure my own child is healthy as well.
  4. I'm just wondering if this is different for each school, or if it's the same. Is the nursing program based on GPA or just the results of the test alone? I have heard that my local community college goes based on the results of the NCLEX only, and does not look at the GPA. That seems rediculous to me, that's why I'm wondering if other schools do this. I tried calling the nursing office, but they are closed right now. (have to wait until monday! ) I am also wondering if I do bad in a class, say... a D, can I retake the class and get a better grade and have that class show up on my GPA? It's a sociology class, and I took it last summer. I"m just wondering if the higher grade will totally override the bad grade, and the bad grade won't even show up on my transcripts. Is this true, or not???

I asked the same question on the Nurse Practitioner board, but no one answered me! Someone must know!!! :stone waiting, waiting, waiting........
  7. Wow, just reading this post really makes me want to become a L&D Nurse. Not just because I find it so interesting, but because I want to understand what you all are saying!!!!!!! I understood about 5 words in that whole post!!! (not really, but pretty close!!) In any case, I'm so glad the woman survived to raise her daughter. I assume this is a pretty rare and very deadly thing. How do you handle situations like that? Where the chances of the patient dying are so great? Do you tell them they are going to be fine?
  8. Thanks for answering my question. But now I have another one! When moving from state to state, do you have to get your RN license all over again in a different state? ARe there different certifications to have? Do you have to take some tests?
  9. Actually, my friend ended up getting gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, so I think they did have to test the baby for diabetes. Maybe that's why they kept her there so long.
  10. I realize that your husbands job is a separate issue, but right now, I'm in the office, administrative assistant job area, and almost every time I get interviewed they ask if I am married and, very non-schalantely they will say "oh, and what does your husband do??" maybe it's different with nursing.
  11. Just curious about this because my husband is contemplating going into the coast guard. I am taking my pre-requs right now, so if he goes into the coast guard, I will be taking my nursing classes wherever he get's stationed. I;ve heard that they move about every 4 years, so is it hard to get nursing jobs when you tell them your husband is in the military? or do you just not say anything?
  12. I have a question about how long hospitals keep baby's in the nursery after they are born. I'm asking this because my friend just had a baby girl this weekend. She had her via C-cection at about 2:00 in the afternoon. She didn't get to see her baby until about 6:15 at night. I was suprised, because when I had my son 2 years ago, they gave him right to me and let me hold him for about 1/2 hour to hour before they took him to do tests and stuff. But then they brought him right back within probably 1-2 hours at the MOST. I had my son natural, so is it because of the c-cection they kept her longer? I just thought that wasn't very good, because baby's need to be with their mother. My friend also said she wanted to breast feed, and when the nurses brought the baby back, they said they gave her some formula. I don't understand why they would do this? My friend was in recovery for about an hour, and then she was in her room for about 2 hours before they gave the baby to her. It didn't make any since to me and I was wondering if this was normal, or if this hospital just doesn't know what they are doing. Thanks!!!
  13. OH, and I posted on this thread earlier... my goal is to be a CNM. It would be especially embarrasing if I was a CNM, and was all set to deliver naturally, and then end up getting the epidural.... also, has anyone ever birthed or labored in the tub? How does it help for the pain?
  14. OK, I have a question. It sounds like most of you have had children already. Did you all do it naturally, or did you get an epidural? I admire those women who can do it naturally, but I just couldn't. I have 1 son, and during my whole pregnancy, I wanted to have natural childbirth, but boy, i was NOT ready for that pain!!! When I watch those shows, it just seems so much more meaningful, and more emotional to do it natural. I plan on waiting until I've got my ASN at least, maybe even my BSN before having any more kids. I don't want to be a "hipocrite" and talk so highly of the midwife, natural childbirth thing, and then be a complete wimp and end up getting an epidrual! Does anyone know what I mean????
  15. Yep, we call him Ty-Ty, Ty, or Ty-Pie(like the game :) ) He likes it. :chuckle
