I think its a great idea!! I am 34 with 2 kids and graduating with my RN in 4 weeks. I know you can do it. I managed to get divorced, work 2 jobs, got my LPN, and am now finishing with my RN. I too worked in the hopital as a CNA my first year of school.
Definately LPN to RN if your prerequesites are the same for both. That is what I did. It took me one year to get my LPN and then one additional year to finish my RN, which I am currently doing and will graduate in just a few weeks. The experience I have had working as an LPN in the hospital is something you will never learn in the classroom or even clinicals. I was so much more confident going into my 2nd year. Good luck with whatever you decide!
I feel your pain. I also don't feel that we should be spoonfed the material but I think it also says alot about your instructor if his fail percentage is so high. We are paying $ for an education and I think they are getting paid to teach us what we need to know. As far as what will happen when your patient is circling the toilet, you can't be taught these things from a book. This will all come with experience. Good luck with your class!!
