whats this i hear about kaplan being accredited now? accredited by wasc or what? the person who told me didnt know the details.

Thanks, I am consindering the CSUSM accelerated program. Any info would be helpful...here or PM is fine. But mostly, do you like it there and how are the instructors? Is it true that the accelerated program is only in Temecula now? If so, are they doing clinicals in Temecula too? What about the generic program, where do you guys do clinical?

Ooh I totally forgot about this thread. Your idea about BSN sounds better by the minute. Why sit on a waitlist for 2-3 years when I can finish a BSN in the same amount of time, especially when I have so little info about the ADN programs. Any advice on which BSN program to attend? I already have a bachelor, so SDSU is not an option because they aren't taking 2nd bachelor students right now. PLN looks good but I would prefer not to take out a huge student loan.

I am new here, and I did my pre-reqs outside of San Diego County, so I am out of the loop as far as knowing the reputations of the different programs in SD. Where do I go to get the best instruction?

Is this a bad idea? A nurse I know suggested it might be. My impression is there are a lot of details and paperwork in nursing school, and ABSN programs are like a year-long cram session. Conceptually it seems like an ineffective way to learn nursing especially if you have little medical background to build on but I dunno. I'm espeically curious to know what ABSN students/grads who had no experience going in think about this matter.

Please do. The 50k for an associates is insane, but if their grads are adequately trained and can get jobs, it's an option that can get someone into the profession without having to waitlist for 3 years. Also, that person is in and out in under 2 years, compared to 2.5 years for a community college program. Of course, it's all meaningless if hospitals won't hire them. To the OP: I don't have my paperwork in front of me, and it's been a while since I've talked with Kaplan, but I want to say the work experience has to be 6 months, verified by letter from employer. You'll also need acceptable scores on teh TEAS and Wonderlic tests, 2 letters of reccomendation, HS transcripts even if you have a college degree, urine test, and background check. The program is just under 24 months. I think it's 20, but don't quote me on that.

Good luck on your application. Yeah, took the TEAS, took the Wonderlic, and filled out all that paperwork. Haven't started gathering anything yet however because some things would be a waste if I decide to not attend: HS transcripts, background chk, and physical exam, for example. I suppose it couldn't hurt to have college transcripts and letters of reccomendation on hand in case I apply elsewhere though. I think I'll start on that... Have you spoken to financial aid yet? I haven't. Maybe that's something you do once you've submitted your package?

Nope, haven't made up my mind yet. I hope I can make up my mind before the application due date coming up. I'm also considering September. Btw, who doesn't look at them as good? I know people think it's a waste because the credits don't transfer to most schools if you pursue a BSN. But I don't care about that at all. I'm ony concerned if the people who make hiring decisions hold anything against Kaplan grads.

yeah, 50k is a lot, hence my reluctance to jump right in. but it saves me a lot of time. i was not aware of wgu, so thanks for that. it looks like an option if i'm willing to move. i would prefer not to move, but if i can finish elsewhere in the same time frame for under 50k (tuition + housing), then i might go for it. however, if cost incl housing came up about the same, i'd prefer the luxury of staying right where i am. decisions, decisions...

actually, yes that is my situation. i have a bachelors, and i have also considered accelerated BSN. but here is my local situation... 50k adn: i can start this september, finish spring 2011. OSU San Diego: i have to complete 1 more of their pre-reqs before applying. the soonest i could take that class is fall 09, meaning the soonest i could apply is dec 09 to start who knows when (summer 2010?). CSU San Marcos Accelerated: i would have to complete 1 more of their requirements before applying. soonest i could take that class is summer 09, which takes me out of the current application cycle since pre-reqs for the spring 2010 start date need to be completed before the june application deadline. since they only start one class per year, the soonest i could apply is for their next cohort with a spring 2011 start date. musn't forget there's always the CC system: wait forever

no, but i am debating whether i should pay 50,000 for an ADN program. it is a lot. i am not sure if it is worth it, but the other alternatives are to wait 2+ years. monthly payments have got to be a *****.

good idea to pay 50k for an ADN program that i could start right away? all other options require waiting at least 2 years. eg, cc have 2-5 yr waitlists, bsn programs require more pre-reqs, etc.

Two more: how many uniforms are included in the fees? And what color do the RN students wear? Petty, I know. But I am curious.

Hi D&C. What do you mean by assigned work...you mean there is alot of homework or papers or presentations or quizzes or what? Are you pretty much on campus or in clinical M-F? And are clinicals pretty much in the area, if not what are some of the farther sites? Do they have a library or study place to work in between classes? How long are the "semesters" and do you get vacation time between them? Do most people pass the program? What happens if you fail a class (seems most places kick those students out)? You seem pretty positive about the program. Is there anything about the program you are not so positive about? Besides yourself, how is student morale overall? Thx for checking in.

ok, this is so good to know. transferrability of courses is not an issue with me. i was more concerned with quality of education, instructors, student satisfaction, etc.
