  1. Have you been able to talk to a recruiter? I have attempted many times over the past year to get in touch with a reserve healthcare recruiter for the Navy and haven't been able to get in touch with any. I've called, emailed, left messages, went through local recruiters to try and get in touch with a healthcare recruiter and nada! If anyone knows how to get through to one, I would love to hear!
  2. I am trying to understand the application of the OHDC. I understand what causes a shift to the right or to the left. I am just kind of stuck on what we apply it to??? In what situation would this curve be used in the real world??? Understanding it's use will help me understand it better.

ahahn--thanks for the well wishes! Do you have any tips you could share? Things you wish you knew before you started?? Good luck to you also! You are just a couple of short semesters away from being done! BTW... reading all these posts has me kind of worried about the local job market...since you are out in the hospitals, how is the local job market for new grads?
  4. I am doing a project for a healthcare IT class. I have never worked at a hospital so I just have a quick simple question. When nurses go to a computer to chart or get results or anything computer related, do you have to manually log in or can you swipe a card that will log you in with maybe a pin number?? I am trying to come up with a plan to make accessing the computer quicker and simpler.
  5. Not yet. I applied for both UCF Cocoa and again for Palm Bay BCC this year. I just found out last week that I made it into UCF Cocoa with a start of January 2011, which I am completely thrilled about!
  6. I applied last year (didn't make it) but I heard about mid October. Good luck to you!
  7. You should have no problem getting in once chemistry is complete. Good luck to you... I was kind of in the same place last year, just missing chem and stats and once I finished those and was waiting to apply I started working on a minor. I thought that might give me a leg up. I wish you the best!

Wow! I got in!! I think I am still in shock. the last 18 hours have been pretty rough, but I got in!! Good luck to everyone and I'll see the Cocoa class in January!!

Well I finally got an email... Only it was a denial! I was like what?! I thought for sure I would get in. So I called to find out the cut off GPA because everything else is perfect. Pre-reqs are all complete with a 4.0! I had to email an advisor who said it "might" be a mistake he would look into it tomorrow. I don't know what I am missing??? I am hoping it was a screw up, but if it wasn't this was a very very tough term to get in GPA wise. Congrats to those who did get in!!! Keep on plugging to those who didn't...

In a weak moment, I called the Orlando College of Nursing. The lady on the phone sounded slightly annoyed that I was asking, and she said "I don't have a definite answer, last I knew they were trying to get them out next week with the deadline." I wish I didn't call!! I hope they realize they have lots of folks waiting on pins and needles for an answer. COME ON ALREADY!!!!

Not only do I have my knights mail open all day at work, I am checking this board constantly in case a letter comes to someone on here! If I do get a message in my inbox, I have a split second panic attack before it registers that the message is not from the College of Nursing. I really just want to know, one way or the other. Years worth of work and the answer seems minutes away...Hurry up already!!
  12. I just called as well and got the same information. So that is a good sign. If you get the same info from 2 different places, chances are it might be right! She said "end of next week" and it will be by email. This is going to be a really long week! Good Luck to everyone and please post if/when you hear anything!
  13. Wow, email!? I wouldn't have guessed they would notify you by email. This is so nerve wracking!!!
  14. KnightRN replied to KnightRN's topic in Florida Nursing
Another week passes and still no letter....The wait is getting worse and worse!
  15. Thanks for the quick reply!!! That is good to hear. I am really hoping that is how it will work for me. I wasn't specific enough in my original post, but I am looking at mainly the AF. Although, before I get going I will explore all of the opportunities in all the branches.
  16. With any good fortune, I should be starting a BSN program in January. I will be 35 when that starts and 36 when I would graduate. My husband has been/currently is in the AF and I work for AF now so I am pretty familiar with the way of life. I want to join as soon as I graduate but am not sure if I want to go AD or Reserves. Well, I want AD but our kids will be in high school and I would rather not move them at this time. So my question is, is it easy or even possible to start out in the Reserves and then switch to AD later? I know this is difficult, if not impossible for most enlisted positions but I was wondering how it worked for nurses?? TIA :)

I hope you are right and it comes soon. I had prepared myself to wait until the first week of September, so if it comes any day I will be ecstatic!
  18. KnightRN replied to KnightRN's topic in Florida Nursing
I haven't heard anything yet and I am anxiously awaiting a letter. I hope it's sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the info!! That cut off is promising! Its hard to say because Orlando takes so many more applicants than Cocoa/Daytona. The good news is they are reviewing and, according to the website, we will know BY Sept 1. I am just ready to know and move on. I am going to apply at BCC as a backup but really really want UCF. Good luck and with some good fortune, we could be classmates in January!
  20. KnightRN replied to KnightRN's topic in Florida Nursing
Thanks for the information on how they rank. I've met with an advisor at Cocoa twice and was never told how they rank applicants. There were no information sessions this term either, at least not on their website. Did they happen to tell where the cutoff in points was last term?

You have more information that I have. I have talked to advisers over the past 2 years and all they tell me is "admission criteria." I haven't seen really anywhere what they look at for sure. BCC's program has it all spelled out exactly for you, which is very nice! I did just submit my application for the Spring start. I have all my pre reqs completed, 3.7 gpa and passed the TEAS test. I feel that is pretty competitive and if that doesn't make it then I gave it my best shot and BCC here I come! I have A's in all my pre reqs so there is nothing I could improve on, that is simply the best I could do! Good luck to you in your application and fingers double crossed we will be class mates in January!
  22. KnightRN replied to KnightRN's topic in Florida Nursing
I am not sure on the competitiveness, but I'm guessing it's probably pretty competitive. I talked to an advisor last year and he told me they have 30-35 slots and over 300 applicants. I don't know how many of those are qualified applicants though. You might want to check with the advisor because I am pretty sure Chemistry has to be complete before you apply. The other sciences don't, but I think that one does. Make sure you talk to an advisor before you make any final decisions about applying and don't take my word for it! Are you aiming for Cocoa or Daytona? Good luck!!
  23. KnightRN replied to RN2B01's topic in Florida Nursing
Good luck to you too! All we can do is keep working towards it. I sure will be happy when an acceptance letter comes wherever it comes from!
  24. KnightRN replied to RN2B01's topic in Florida Nursing
Good luck!!! I agree it gets harder and harder every semester! It didn't take long, maybe 6 weeks or so after the application cut off date. If you don't get into the fall semester, you should be a shoe in for the spring semester.
  25. KnightRN replied to RN2B01's topic in Florida Nursing
I really think its not properly updated on the BCC website. It says you need an overall 72% on the TEAS, but a minimum of 85% in the "Science Reading Comprehension." First, on the score sheet there is no reading comprehension. There is reading, with paragraph comprehension, but not the same. I got an 80% in the science portion and the score sheet says the national average is 63%. So I just really don't think its right. Last year they school used the NET test, so I am thinking maybe that paragraph just wasn't updated correctly?? I hope anyway!! When I applied last fall for spring, I think I had 30 points or so. I knew that wouldn't be enough but thought "what the hell!" I was enrolled in Microbiology, so I missed those 5 points. I have since completed that college algebra, and got my AA. Plus 2 points for having a previous application, I should be around 40 now. I am finishing statistics and chemistry this semester for UCF and all pre reqs will be done. I am just tired of BCC so I am really hoping for UCF. I also have the financial obligation problem. My "plan" is to tighten and do what I can and use loans to make up the difference. After graduation, I was thinking of joining the military reserves or active and use them for loan repayment. Sorry if I am rambling, but its nice to have someone to talk to who understands the challenge of this whole thing!! How many points do you have for Cocoa? Good luck!! I know the struggle!!
