Get as hands-on as you absolulely can during your lab practice time and your clinical time. I didn't during lab (only did the required one-time practice), I watched very carefully and asked questions but did not get my "hands wet" during the clinical experience, and felt completely lost when I started working and was on my own the first time. Experience really is the best teacher; use it to your advantage! The course itself and the material are pretty common-sense. So is the state exam.
