  1. Wishing everyone good luck on their AMNP interview. I am in the AMNP Cohort # 2. I finished phase 1 last May. The program is challenging but well worth it Again, best of luck! FYI about our class...we had five males. Most students were in their 20's and several had just finished thier BS. We also had several in thier early to mid thirties and four were over 40. All students that finished phase 1 passed NCLEX!! Again, good luck!
  2. I took all my biology (Anatomy, Physiology, & Micro), chemistry,(inorganic & organic) and nutrition pre-reqs at UAB and made an A in all of them. I would recommend taking chemistry at UAB. I attended all of the classes and labs and didn't get behind and made very high A's in the classes. The key is not getting behind.
  3. I hope the textbook info is available soon. They should be sending out more emails soon. Good luck with the housing...I know that has to be frustrating!
  4. I think you can apply for the graduate plus loan if the others do not cover the total cost. I think you can apply for the grad plus through UAB. Not a 100 percent sure though.
  5. I checked with someone I know in the BSN program. They do not require a specific stethoscope. He said most in the class purchased either the Littman Clasic S.E.M or the Littman Cardiology III.
  6. I think they are going to send something out soon about uniforms, etc. I will check around to see if I can find out anything about the stethoscopes.
  7. not bad at all...thanks for the info!
  8. I hope they are reasonable! As far as the shoes, if I were you, I would give it a try!
  9. I am sooo ready to get started as well. Have any of you taken care of your uniforms yet?
  10. For 502L, I signed up for Talley (43319). The other classes just gave me one option. 501 and 504 with Hataway, 612 with Slick, and 614 with McHaney. Have you received any more info in the mail? I have not.
  11. We have to have medical clearance before we can register for the clinical courses. I sent the office an email asking if we could go ahead an register even if we have not received the official acceptance letter. She advised me that we have to have medical clearance. Since the system lets you register for 612 and 614, it must be a requirement for the clinical courses only.
  12. I have to wait until 3PM to register. I will let you know what happens.
  13. rachel, thanks for the great info! concerning the footwear, can we opt for a clog style shoe? you mentioned that the nursing central software could probably be installed on an iphone or any other phone with a pda format. does the pda they “recommend” require any type data package in order to operate? if it does, i will go the iphone route! if it doesn’t, i will get the pda and keep my current phone….trying to make the $$ stretch as far as possible! any survival tips? i know the program will be intense! also, have they given the first class any insight into how the residency program will work. thanks again for all the info.
  14. Same here...can't wait!
  15. Don't know for sure if we will need one. There is software that can be installed on the PDA such as Pharmacology. I guess it allows students to access the data at their fingertips during clinicals
  16. On the UAB website, you can click on the bookstore link. It will then let you enter the class and section numbers of your classes and then display the books required for the class. All of our classes indicate that the textbook information has not been determined.
  17. Reeneja...I am with you on the books! I check each day to see if they have been added! Do you by chance know if the AMNP students will need a PDA? The BSN students do and it runs about $375!
  18. i have spent a good amount of time on the medical clearance. seems like it is taking forever! i have a full time job, so it has been a challenge to get things scheduled. i have also been trying to figure out when my last day of work will be. i would love to take a couple of weeks off before i start but don’t know if i will be able to work that out or not. i live about 25 minutes away from campus. i hope they send information soon about uniforms, registration, etc. kinda wish i could start april 11th instead of may 11th!
  19. congrats polskablondie1!!!
  20. I have been working in the business sector for 16+ years. Most of my time has been spent in sales and marketing. I selected the AMNP program b/c I will be able to start working as a RN after I complete the first three semesters and take the NCLEX. When I start the MSN part of the program, I will be working as a nurse gaining much needed experirnce. If I opted for the traditional program UAB offered, I would have to wait until I finished the 5th semester b4 I took the NCLEX.
  21. Just got home....my letter was waiting.....I got in...yeah!!!
  22. reneeja....awesome news! I will not get home until 10:30pm tonight. I hope I have good news waiting!
  23. whether or not to pursue a master’s in nursing depends on what your personal career goals are. if you just want an rn, then the accelerated program is not for you. my career goals are to eventually complete a dnp. since i already have a bs and ma in business, the accelerated program is the best option for me. i would be able to complete my rn and msn in 7 semesters compared to a bsn in five semesters. upon finishing the program, i would work a few years and then start working on my nurse practitioner degree. some of the coursework you take in the msn portion of uab’s accelerated program is the same as the coursework in the nurse practitioner tract. so it would just be a matter of taking the classes needed to satisfy the requirements for the particular np certification i select. (starting in 2015, you will need a dnp to become a np) i also have teaching aspirations, so a msn will allow me to teach in some settings prior to getting a dnp. the price of the program at uab is reasonable. especially if you compare it to other accelerated programs. i looked at the accelerated programs at vanderbilt and the university of washington. both were outstanding programs, however, i did not feel that the additional cost associated with those particular programs made it worth applying. uab has one of the highest rated graduate nursing programs in the nation. tops in alabama for sure. that weighed on my decision as well. uab might be a little more expensive than some of the other programs in town but i think the quality of education is superior. i have taken all of my pre req courses at uab and have had students in some of my classes that took some of the earlier pre-reqs other places around town. they all struggled in the classes and had to play catch up. my advisor did an awesome job of planning out the order of my courses and i was able to complete all the pre-reqs with a 4.0.
  24. Has anyone out there applied for UAB's AMNP Program that starts in May 2009? If so, has anyone received any information on the status of their application?
