  1. Thanks everyone, for helping me understand this. Can this be evident at birth - obviously if there is great discrepancy in weight or birth trauma there would be but some of my online reading said that CP sometimes manifests at anytime during the first year, delayed milestones, etc. Is there no way to detect this before birth? I'm so taken by this family -- they suffer so much. I'm a little concerned about my 15 yo working for them, this child gets sick **a lot** has had many hospitalizations so I worry about everything from my dd getting colds, etc., to her having to deal with this little one's death... What can I do to make sure my 15 yo is healthy (physically and emotionally) thoughout the time she cares for this girl? Why would a CP child have such low immunity? Sorry for all the questions, but everything is a learning experience.
  2. Hi everyone, My 15 year old daughter just got her first job as a personal care assistant for a 5 y/o girl. This is what I know: Child is developmentally 9 mos -- wears diapers, crawls, has feeding tube, and has active seizures. No speech, just code sounds for various things. She is *happy* and has a gorgeous smile. Mom says she gets sick more and more, colds, etc. Her twin is normal. My dd is being paid through the CP Association but the mother said her dd does not have CP. Is it a case of failure to thrive in utero? Would an ultra sound have shown this? Damage to one twin at birth? I don't know much terminology -- just in prenursing, but I found it interesting that this little girl's twin is so robust.

Is it a case of failure to thrive in utero? I don't know much terminology -- just in prenursing, but I found it interesting that this little girl's twin is so robust. Thanks for any insights! Perhaps I'll post this on OB/L/D board as well.

  6. This concerns false positives and a strange experience I had when pregnant. I was a great, compliant healthy patient. When it came time for the AFP test I had this **gut** feeling that I would get a false positive and worry for the duration of my pregnancy. I turned down the test. And I'm SO glad I did -- I have the most beautiful 15 year old! What I'm trying to say is that I think our instincts are very finely tuned -- for some of us a lot of the time, but VERY fine tuned in pregnancy. Has anyone else every refused a test or procedure due to a gut feeling, OB/GYN or otherwise? I find this really interesting.
  7. This is a really interesting thread. I've been struggling about whether to post my observation here because it's so hard to know the whole story. I come to this board with a background in family therapy and, at the risk of conjecture, this is what I think might be going on. I'm not saying these things to be negative, just to put an idea on the table. It seems like your husband is a mama's boy. That has to be dealt with and his first allegiance has got to be to you and his child from now on. In my practice I saw a lot of men like this treat their wives very differently once they became mothers. In a word the lover becomes *mother* with a capital M and this can lead to all manner of sexual problems, etc. I'm not saying this will happen in your marriage once your child is born. But if your dh tends to see women as "good" (mother) or "bad" (sexual being) you will have some work to do. Oh, man I hope I don't catch h*** for posting this; just based on my experience working with men who cannot integrate all aspects of womanhood.
  8. ooh, I'm not a nurse yet, but I'm trying to figure out what you are getting at! No dd (dear daughter) doesn't have any other symptoms. She has improved dramatcially by using orthotics. The ready-made ones from the podiatrist's office made all the difference in the world and now I have to go pick up the custom ones ($300.00! ) She has flat feet and hyper-flexible ankles -- this really affected her entire body. Gee, would have been nice to have been told that by the orthopedist who did her surgery years ago, or even a pediatrician!
  9. Hi Elijah, I took the MFT route and I would do things differently knowing what I know now. I have not been in practice for over a decade, and what has changed the most since I left is the integration of medical management into mental health care. I regard this as an wonderful development and often reflect on my clients from years past who would have benefited so greatly from some of the newer meds. (Or older ones! ) If I had it to do over again I would be sure to be credentialed to prescribe or to work in a practice of well-recognized MDs/APRNs who have MSWs on board and work collaboratively. If I were your age I'd become a psychiatrist or APRN with the mission of destimatizing mental illness! Then the world is your oyster *and* you are providing comprehensive care! The MSW is sought after in hospitals, so if that's what you are after, I think its as nearly as good as a nursing degree. It's very difficult to make a living strictly through private practice given the HMO climate. If you live in a *very* expensive area and specialize in problems unique to that area, you will likely get enough private pay patients to float your boat. Feel free to PM me if you wish! Barbara
  10. Well, we'll just ignore my earlier thread about my missed period last week while on the pill and pretend I'm writing with an interest in the 50-something women in the news recently. The 57 yo who had twins via IVF and the even older woman in Georgia who claims a natural twin pg from hubby who had a vas years ago :chuckle How DO older (well not THAT) old women do? Not that I'm scared or anything, I mean how could I possible get pg at my age on the pill when I only passed dh in the night once all month? :uhoh21:
  11. UGH sorry for the typos.
  12. I presume I'm perimenopausal and one of my concerns about going on the pill was "how will I know where I am" in perio-menopause. Does the pill interfere with the beginning of missed, light periods, etc.? Secondly re: the cyst, if I'm not ovulating, how can I form a cyst? Please don't even suggest pregnancy ; I took my pills each and every day and barely saw my dh Are you telling me 40-something women on this board have been pregnant?
  13. Here's a quick question -- I've been on the pill for almost a year for cysts. This month, NO period Just PMS, cramping and a tiny bit of spotting. What's going on -- I'm 40 somthing and NOT PREGNANT! I'm supposed to start my active pills tonight...
  14. I got a very strong feeling that there's a *very* disturbing agenda at play here. Cults and this family have a lot in common: confirmity (dress), rigid routines, punishments for deviating or questioning the leader (of course TLC isn't going to show or imply that!), and isolation from the outside world. I think everyone but Jim Bob is a robot. I believe they are all brainwashed. I hope that at least one of those adorable children makes it out of that family and larger milieu and writes a book.

Remember the days whem women fought NOT to be "prepped" (shaved) for delivery?!!!

Now I know I'm old. But I go to day spas and stuff. So, who does this waxing? Estheticians? Derms? Does it hurt? Isn't this really high maintenance. I hate armpit and leg hair too and "the forest" under the swimsuit, but just help me figure out the who, where, how of this -- I get the why!

"...It's really become the 'style" with the generation that revels in their sexuality and explores it to the fullest without shame..." Wait a minute! That was MY generation!

Sorry, but the idea of shaving pubic hair COMPLETELY off is essentially saying "I'm a child..." Pretty sick when you think about it...
  19. Hi everyone, I'm considering midlife career move to nursing. I'm interested in L/D and also in SANE certification. I'd love to volunteer in a L/D unit -- what are roles for volunteers? Seriously, do most you consider us "in the way?" Are volunteers able to actually see any activity, hold babies, or do we deliver flowers and such? Thanks!
  20. Thanks for your note! I'm thrilled to say that our visit to the podiatrist was very enlightening. My dd was fitted for custom orthotics (sp?), which lots of nurses on these boards swear by for their own demanding jousting :rotfl: I learned a lot from the woman my dd saw and she assured dd that once her foot - ankle - calf - lowe back alignment is corrected she'll feel great and be able to do any sport she desires. I'm someone who never knew a thing about podiatry -- are podiatrists marginalized somehow? I just a lowly prenursing student but I'll be seeing one as soon as I find myself on my feet a lot!
  21. While a appreciate the movement to more natural, safe births, I have to tell you that the way Mothering Mag and the Silent Knife mentality brainwashed me and led me to feel like a failure enrages me. I lived in an intensely "hip" place -- people birthing with the dolphins and such -- and I practially got SYMPATHY cards from people who heard I'd been "CUT." The birth of my daughter was the miracle of my life. She brought amazing joy as a little one and is now an amazing young women. Now I don't know which was worse, the drug response or the way I *knew* so-called friends felt I hadn't "really" given birth. As time went on I thought a lot about how lady partsl, unmedicated births were kind of "macha" for some women where I lived -- real proof of what they could endure, kind of a parroting of male machismo. I've mellowed a little but it's complicated. It's also interesting that this surfaces now, when I am *really* too old to have another baby. What we women go through! We have to honor the mysterious ways all of our babies come into this world, don't you think?
  22. Thank you -- it's very validating. The C-Sec was such a huge disappointment in the first place and I was SO exhausted (had been awake for 36 hours, in labor for 14), and I went into the whole experience so *pressured* to have a vag delivery (I lived in a part of the country where everyone read Mothering Mag, Silent Knife, etc.). I was just so vulnerable and felt like a complete failure being wheeled down that hall - sleep deprived and in love with my baby whom I longed to meet. To know you had a similar sensation is really validating. I'm NOT someone who enjoys altered states of consciousness at all. I wish I could have gotten through this earlier and had one more baby -- but that's my emotional, peri-menopausal voice there! :kiss Barbara
  23. I was not under GA -- had an epidural. Why was I sent to recovery? I will get those medical records will they ALL be with the OB/GYN's office (every hospital notation, etc.?). Until then, I'd really appreciate your opinion about this experience and if you've ever seen anything like this in the OR. I *do* remember one nurse saying "Well **here's** a patient who hasn't had much experience with recreational drugs!" like my response was a big joke.
  24. I googled Droperidol and it does NOT appear to be off the market, tho has been given the black box. Perhaps the doc I spoke to said "We don't use it anymore..."
  25. Thanks so much for your message. This experience was so bad I believe it's the main reason I did not have any more children and experienced panic disorder starting about 6 mos pp. Was I sent to recovery due to the drug experience? Do most C-section moms go directly back to their room? Sorry -- I've only been on the L/D unit to have my baby and visit friends -- and am not yet a nurse, so don't know the protocol. Why would you think I almost coded? The doc yelling in my face? I've been telling myself that while I *felt* like I was dying I was, most likely just incredibly sedated. Now I want to SUE. :angryfire Anyone who would prefer may Email me privately. I need to work through this...
