I am in NJ and almost every hospital requires a BSN before they will look at your application. Some say BSN preferred, but all of the online apps have a check box for BSN. I have an ADN, and most from my class were unable to land hospital jobs unless they had connections, or hospital experience as a PCA. I am now starting my BSN online and hope that will help my chances for the hospital.

Hello everyone. I am starting WGU RN-BSN on December 1st. I just got my transfer eval. It seems like I only have to complete the BSN courses and nutrition - 25units. Is this typical? One of my RN courses had a nutrition component - should I even ask to have them evaluate it, or nutrition is no big deal? I am excited to join you and get moving on this!

Thanks again for the fee waiver - I applied and I will do the assessment or whatever it is called tomorrow. They said I could start Dec 1st but hoping I can sneak in by November 1st.

Thanks - I sent you my email info :-) Just a question. What happens if you dont pass a class - do you retake it? Just wondering. Hopefully this wont be an issue, but just making sure. I already have a BA and an AAS - so I am hoping this wont be a long process.

I know some people started a few weeks ago, but for many of us, this past week was the first week. So - how did it go? I am a new grad, worked at summer camp and just started my first RN school nurse job. So far, so good. I have a lot of paperwork to organize so that has been my focus between lice checks, minor boo boos and organizing my office. My school is small and very supportive and nice, so that has been a huge blessing. I am looking forward to the new week. Oh and the scrubs have worked out perfectly -I have pockets for keys and bandaids for when I am not in my office.

So, how did the first week go?

Do not go the Diploma route. Right now, ADNs are really struggling to find jobs in NJ - I believe those with a Diploma will struggle even more. I would do the ADN and then BSN - or better yet, BSN to start.

Thanks to both of you for the support and ideas. It is a small school, so I think each class will only have like 6-12 kids. Actually, there is a new teacher who used to teach health so I am going to go to her for ideas for sure. I took home a few books to help me, and once they get back to me with the curriculum, I think I will feel a lot better (I hope)

Hello to my fellow school nurses. Thanks for always answering my questions. So, my story is that I am a brand new RN, worked as a camp nurse this summe for 5 weeks at overnight camp with other nurses (so I wasnt alone) and now I am starting as the school nurse in a small private school of just over 100 students. I am very excited and of course nervous. I have spent a few days organizing the office and checking supplies. My main concern is that I ahve to teach health to the middle school once/week for about 40min or so. I am terrified. I am going in today to see their curriculum, but I know that middle school can be tough. I am so nervous that they will see it is my first time and they will die of laughter at me. Any advice for a newbie?

Thanks everyone. I decided to ask and was told that scrubs were fine. So, I ordered my first ever non nursing school scrubs - I am excited!

Nursing courses only, not A&P or anything else, will.cost you about $2500. Books can be a few hundred, uniforms are about $100.

Hello to all of the school nurses out there. I recently accepted a position as a school nurse in a small school. I am a new grad but I did do sleep-away camp nursing this summer which was a great crash course. I am going to have plenty of questions I am sure and I have already read through many threads. I am wondering what you wear to work as the school nurse? They told me that regular clothing is fine, which is great, but I don't have a lot of business casual, so I would need to buy a lot of clothing. I kind of want to wear scrubs but I am embarrassed to ask. So - what do you wear? THANKS!

Many of us graduated back in December and have not found jobs yet. I just landed a job last week. Dont give up hope, keep applying. If you are young and not tied to the area, move somewhere else.

Good luck in level 2! You switch clinical instructors for each half of the semester. You get about 5-6 weeks of clinicals in Cardiac and same for Gi/GU. I think what you learn depends on the instructor, not on the hospital. It all depends on how much you put into it. Some people hang back and some get right in there.

I just finished 5 weeks as a camp nurse and I must have taken 30 temps/day. We used only the ear thermometer and it was a popular brand, but I cant remember it not. Thermoscan maybe. We always did both ears and they were within 0.2 degrees of eachother.

I see that this is an old post. But you actually do not need to be a certified school nurse to work as a nurse in provate schools in NJ. You do need either a BSn or a BA/BS in a related field. Plus of course, you need to be an RN.
