playground safety
fairly new elementary school nurse and I would like to put together a memo/request for school staff since I've noticed that our pk/kinder kids have alot of falls on the playground when they are on the jungle gym/monkey bars. Since they don't have the dexterity to keep holding on and the metal is hot here in Texas ! Teacher's are not always vigilant with all those little ones. Long story short: I'd like to prevent unnecessary injuries. Does anyone have protocols to share or advice?

triage
How do I let my principal/teachers know that if I have a student who has had an accident and is now in my office I don't need staff in there. How do I explain if you are not direct contact step out. I know they mean well but sometimes they make the controlled situation I have established chaotic. Suggestions? Comments? all appreciated.

body image
I have several students male/female who do not want to eat lunch because they are afraid to gain wt. I have a fifth grade boy who leaves his tray untouched. I have tried speaking to them about nutrition and growing bodies. I am wondering are there sites I can go to where I can print up about nurtrition and need for energy, things like that. Help, Btw: I spoke to some parents who did not seem very concerned and one actually laughed and said " he looks better thin" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Communication PLEASSEEE!
I had to post a friendly "reminder" to the staff that I needed nurse referral forms. I also posted to them if children showed up with no referal then they would be sent back with a blank one to be filled out. (Of course if child is bleeding/emesis or resp destress different matter.) This seemed to have helped.

I JUST NEED TO VENT!!!
SchoolNurse BSN: do you still have your list of medical/nonmedical for the staff? If possible can I have a copy. I had a teacher send me a student with referral because " has dog poop on bottom of shoe please remove it" with a smiley face. Really? She did not appreciate me telling her it was not a medical reason. I'd like my second year as school nurse to run a little smoother Thank you

hot cheetos & GI probs
Hi everyone, does anyone know of a website with pictures regarding the damage of hot cheetos/takis chips on kids teeth enamel and cause of heartburn in kids. My school allows kids to have these chips during lunch if the kid brings them from home. Worse I've seen teachers eating them as well. :barf01: Thanks, SC:banghead:

documenting burns
these kids have learned what to answer to "protect" mom. Sally is 2nd grade, smart little girl. They bounce back from grma to mother all the time. When IAM able to get a hold of mom she sounds "sleepy/groggy, slurred speech" if you know what I mean.

documenting burns
:confused:How do we document what we think is a cigarrette burn? The child couldn't tell me what it was a burn, a rash she scratched . It is between thumb and index finger. She thought it was maybe from hot soup but wasn't sure. Family does have hx w CPS. This is my first yr as school nurse and need help with this one please.

Lice
My school is notorious for Lice infestations! The teacher's don't seem to understand that if the student had treatment and no live lice are found but nits are present I can't send the kid home. Our policy is no live lice ok to stay. I have told the teacher's that it's getting harder to get rid of lice w just otc treatment since lice/nits are growing immune to them just like constant use of abx. I feel like they blame me for not keeping this under control. They would like me to do weekly checks on the kids but is that really necessary what is that going to achieve other than a complex and over use of lice tx. Any suggestions?
