Hey, Ive been working at prince of wales for the last four years and love it. I also came over from Scotland and although the private system does seem a wee bit daunting at first you'll soon realise you have alot more autonomy as a nurse. I know most of the staff in the hospital and they are all nice helpful people. Which ward are you starting on? 6 north, south or 5 east? Its a pretty social hospital where you find the majority of us at the royal hotel on a Friday night sharing a beer or two As for randwick and getting a flat ect again no worries, there is a huge migrant population in the eastern suburbs so there is an abundance of rooms for rent through out the year. Thanks guys, had my first week under my belt and what you all said si true. Its VERY different to ICU but in a good way. The main thing I'm struggling with is the more junior nurses trying to tell me what to do, grrr had one girl today tell me that when a patient comes back from x-ray I have to reconnect them to the monitor Felt like hiting her for stating the obvious lol. This girl was still in high school when I was finishing my training for crying out loud. Ah well two days off then bk to it friday! I like the fact you dont know whats happening next. Hey all, Help, lve just started a new job in ER (ED) in Australia. Big Sydney hospital, just spent three days on orientation so finally get some time in the department tomorrow. My issue is I've been in ICU for ten years so felt like a change, starting to wonder if its too big a change? I'm sure its just nerves but.... Any words of encouragement advice would be appreciated. Hey, Don't know bout the public, but at Prince of Wales Private, the choice of doing 12hr shifts on surgical wards is available. I work ICU and work as AHM there so know they are possible.

Windazz: Cool your coming to Sydney. I presently work in one of the bigger Sydney hospitals and have had students from Sydney uni & western Sydney uni, both courses from what i gathered are run fairly similar. Although we had recently had some really new students as in only been 6 weeks into their training and they were put on an observational week in ICU eek!! How exciting new country and new career, good luck and hope this helps? Ps you'll love Sydney, I moved here form Scotland 3 yeas ago and neve want to leave ha ha. Jill

Well depends on your definition of restraint

Well you guys in the USA are lucky, in the UK restraints are never used. well not that I have ever seen and boy could we do with them sometimes. Especially the weaning patients who are thrashing about and you basically have to sit on them to stop them extubating themselves. I think it would be interesting to see how many self-extubations would be prevented if restraints were used in the uk. Just my thoughts. Jxx
