Oops, post-master's psych NP program?

Anyone in the Stony Brook NP certificate post-master's program?

I'm a house call NP for our VNA. I love it! I see patients with everything from CHF to psych issues. Would be happy to answer any questions!

Just discovered this faculty thread and want to thank Vicki and all of you for some excellent resources! I have my master's as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have done ER for 19 years, psych the whole time--per diem, and hospice for many years. I practice as a house-call NP on a per diem basis and just finished my first year of teaching LPNs full-time. I LOVE teaching! I used to teach ACLS and various topics for EMTs, so teaching comes naturally. But, I was stumped as to where to find excellent ideas and resources and all of you have provided so much! I am very grateful to be a part of this group!

I love using sims and find our LPN students do take them seriously. They are all quite nervous as we film them and go over their performance after the scenario. To me, simulation is a safe place for students to start to learn the art and science of nursing. I have found they learn from their mistakes and have seen evidence of this in actual clinical situations. I often hear them say:"I'm so glad we did that sim because I always remember my mistakes and feel more confident in clinical". I believe that adding a grade to this merely increases the stress, thus this will decrease the learning that takes place.

I had a student in the last stretch of clinical before he goes into a preceptored clinical. In the preceptored clinical, they are basically on their own and can ask questions to the preceptor. Graduation is in June. This student read an order for insulin wrong and drew up 6 times the ordered dose. The student commented that it seemed like a bit much. I was watching and asked the student to read the order again. He continued to say the wrong dose. I told him he could have killed this patient. The student commented that he is "there to learn, that's why I pay tuition." At this stage of clinical, I find this to be unacceptable and dangerous. I could not pass this student. He had been warned for weeks that he needed to improve. He received weekly written evaluations and we discussed ways to improve. He is now contesting this and feels that I was not fair. Your thoughts?

Terry, stick with one review book. I used Fitzgerald. However, it's one of those tests that seem to have ridiculously worded questions and some very easy questions! I received a high score. I wish you all the best!

Congrats! I also took the AANP and passed on Thursday! Although I felt some of the questions were easy, it was still one of those ridiculous "let's see if you can figure out what the question is asking" kind of exams.I did not feel that it tested my knowledge.

I passed! It actually was a lot easier than I thought and I felt way "over-prepared". I have often wondered why nursing exams have to play games rather than truly testing one's knowledge base. Just my humble musings.
