  1. I do have a tax home, I have a home in NC. And I did opt to take an assignment outside of Austin since it looked like there wasn't much to choose from here, I just signed on with two new agencies and been submitted for jobs in Dallas and Houston just waiting to hear back. I've been in Austin a year and had no trouble finding steady travel assignments until now, so it's forcing me to venture outside of Austin. I didn't think travelers were eligible for unemployment.
  2. I've been a traveler for two years and have worked in AZ, DC, San Antonio and Austin Texas, my last assignment got cancelled a month early due to low census and permanent new hires, which left me with scrabbling to find new employment with such short notice, I've had steady employment in Austin up until this point and it seems the needs have shriveled here. I take the stipend and find my own housing so I have an apartment. I haven't worked in three weeks and my bills are piling up. I've even opted to take jobs in Houston and dallas and I'm waiting for an interview. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I realize that I have to be more flexible and willing to move around to stay employed, I was naive to think I could just continue to get assignments in one city.
  3. I've worked for AYA healthcare and they were very good to work for, their rates were competitive and the housing stipends were pretty reasonable. Always keep in mind that the city and facility needs will almost always determine your pay rate and housing stipend. I currently work for Parallon, they dominate the Texas and Florida needs and eliminate the third party, so they typically pay more and they don't offer insurance.
  4. Yes, you have a very real chance of getting into another program. I too failed out of nursing school years ago my very last semester of nursing school. I applied to several schools with the hopes of getting my credits transferred and not having to start over. I lived in a larger city with many schools and was accepted into several, the problem I ran into was getting all those credits to transfer. I gave up and decided that nursing wasn't for me anymore. I sat out for two years with no real job prospects. I sucked it up and started a new program from the very beginning and I passed and became a nurse two years later. I'm proud to say I've been a nurse for 10 long years.
  5. I thought that it might be a good time for me to do some travel nursing since i'm single with no kids and hours have been cut on my job and OT is definetly out of the question. I have about a year and four months experience on a med surg unit, the problem is that the agencies i've talked with are offering low pay to med-surg nurses with no telemetry experience, what suggestion do you traveling nurses have for me? I really want to travel before I have children.
  6. I can definetly agree that the economy is affecting nursing, hours have been cut drastically on my med-surg unit and no overtime is available hospital wide, I would get 16 hours OT each pay period but now i'm lucky to get my regularly scheduled 36 hours per week. I'm looking to do some travel nursing but with no telemetry experience and only one year of med-surg that is looking pretty bleek also, so I would suggest that if you have a decent job right now stay put, because hospitals are definetly being impacted by the economy. :loveya:
