I worked for a Methodist Hospital as a traveler when I my family and I first moved to San Antonio in the fall of 2008. BAD EXPIERENCE...Started with a private cardiac hospital last fall 2010 that had a a very different feel. While it is challenging and the physicians have high expectations of the RN's. We were unfortunately purchased by Methodist in January 2010 and in 6 months we have lost many solid experienced RN's. Change can be tough and uncomfortable no doubt. I have been a nurse for 8 years so i have weathered change. The increasing patient to nurse ratio,diminishing auxiliary staff has made for very stressful working conditions. We are are strong nursing group but feel very beat down and forced to "conform". I refuse to be a sheep in the herd . Their focus is anything but patient care. While I agree profiting is essential for a business it should not be at the expense of dedicated staff and their patients. You end up with burned out staff,poor patient satisfaction and unfortunately poor patient outcomes. I am seeking to work for a hospital who practices what the preach. I don't have any information on Christus Santa Rosa but it is one I am targeting for new employment. I wish you well and your search. Nursing can be highly exhausting but in turn highly rewarding.

MedinaRN.... Came across your post as I was looking for who staffs Hondo's community hospital with travelers. I actually live in Hondo and commute to SA during the week to work. Do you remember who you were working with that tried to placed you at Medina Community Hospital? Thanks, Traci

Just read this post and realize it's six months after the fact but wonder whatever happened with this. I work in Texas and get a tx free housing stipend(as I provided my own housing) plus $214 a week in "meal allowance" tax free on top of a decent hourly wage. I'm sure all states vary in rules but I'd check directly with the IRS website. Can't remember the link but THEY have specific rules. You don't want to cross them of all people! That amount of money seems"fishy" to me. I see they have cut your pay to rationalize what they are "giving you".You are only being taxed on the lesser amount while you actually make more. In time that could actually hurt you as your payinh into Social Security. Short term it may not affect you too much. I have heard of this same situation coming back on nurses whom ended up owing the IRS big time. Nobody needs that surprise! Check the IRS's rules (they win in the end anyway) and if it feels questionable....always trust your gut! Best of luck in your travel and career! Traci

I'll be working days on TELE like I did in Michigan. It was chaotic before so I'll assume it will be here too. Never charted electronically so other than being nervous about learning a new way to chart I'm excited! I start orientation tomorrow. If you work at Metro on days perhaps we'll eventually meet. Hello, Was scanning through the posts with regard to Metro Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. I am working as a traveler to start on their tele floor next week. The patient to nurse ratios are high at 6:1 sometimes higher. I know at my previous job in Michigan we were 4:1 or 7-8:2 (RN/LPN). That was certainly busy if not unsafe many times. What have been your experiences with ratios? It's nice to hear the hospital is so traveler friendly. I think there are four travelers on day shift now. They must be down on staff.
