What makes a good nurse case manager?
I work in a busy emergency department. I would say the number one skill needed for my position is problem solving, followed closely by thick skin.

POC Testing in the ED
We run UHCG, Chem 7 and cg4 ( venous blood gas) on an Istat, Cardiac enzymes d-dimer and BNP on a biosite. We do finger stick glucose checks on a glucometer. Everything but the UHCG is synced automatically.

Moving to San Antonio......advice on hospitals
I am a newish nurse and I work at Methodist. I work in the ED. Its hectic, but I work with great people. The new management seems to want to make it a great place to work. I know some of my fellow recent graduates also work here in different depts. They all seem happy except one or two who work on the med/surg area. They start new grads out at $20 but if you have exp, the pay does go up. And even though we are not the county hospital ( University), we see a LOT of heart attacks and strokes. We just dont see much trauma. I was told when I was hired that Methodist ED was the only No divert hospital in SA. Since I have been there we have not closed our doors to any ambulance or person, no matter how many are stacked up. Also, we dont have patients waiting in the ED for 24+ hrs. Is it the perfect place to work? Nope. But I doubt there is an utopia out there.

Nursing market becoming oversaturated?
I graduates in May 09 with a BSN in San Antonio. All through school, I kept hearing that the head hunters would be snatching us up before we even graduated. We were fed that we would have so many job offers that we would be able to negotiate a lot of things. I graduated with a good GPA. I have at 14 years exp in either EMS or as a medic in the military. Before graduating, I started putting out applications and resume. I continued doing that after graduating and having by RN , BSN. I had over 60 applications out at the different hospitals around here. I received 2 interviews. Both ended up hiring and an experienced nurse. I ended up getting lucky. I used a good connection and finally got a decent job at one of the places I applied. The only reason I got the job, or even an interview was due to the connection. My best advice for any nursing student about to graduate is to do your best to make contacts. Be memorable for the right reasons. Get into an intern/extern position. Do not rely on HR to find you.
