  1. I had a heated debate amongst nurses today, including the unit manager. I received in report that a dialysis patient get a UA/C&S. Usually, when I see this order I know right away it is a clean catch specimen, but considering this patient has dialysis t/o the week, barely voids. I asked the unit manager if I needed to get an order stating UA/C&S by straight cath. She was hesitant in saying yes, but I have learned through working in other facilities, the order needed to state how it is to be obtained. The UM I could tell wasn't sure and just agreed with me and said yes, to go ahead and fax the dr. When night shift came in she was furious that I had not performed the procedure even though I told her I had not received the clarification from the dr yet. She, and another ease dropping nurse stated I didn't have to do that and that I should've just done it. Am I right in doing so?
  2. I totally couldnt agree more!!! BUT!! Take it from me, I have been there too, and still there! In 2005, I decided to move from TN living on my own working at a factory for $12/hr to my parents home in Ohio and start going to school. I started that fall and decided in 2006 to pursue nursing (LPN, it was shorter). The waiting list was about a year, but it was fine because of all the prerequisites I had to still take. I finally made it to clinicals and about 4 weeks shy of graduation I found out I wasnt passing the math portion. We needed a 90% and I was only getting an 87%. This was devastating to me!! I was out of the program. I had come this far in my life and this close to graduating and so close pursue a career..... and it ****** me off because I was passing the book portion with flying colors. But anyways, quickly, I decided to get back in the game and attend another school. Within 2 weeks I was attending a school with no waiting list. Might I mention this just happened right before thanksgiving. I looked into other schools to see what would transfer and what not, but everything was wait, wait, wait. I said forget it and decided to attend a nursing school. I will be done next december. Did I mention my age? I am 32 yrs old and I have an 8 yr old daughter. I truly feel that the wait is definitely worth it, thats all i hear, just wait till your done, it will all be worth it. Nothing is going to happen over night. Not even in a few months, especially a career! The more time you put into something the better that something will turn out!:redpinkhe Just think about what you want to do. I chose nursing because there are so many opportunities there. If you get tired of a certain field they will accept you anywhere else. With health administration your not going to get paid that much unless you have the schooling to back it up. So either way you will still be in school. Just think about it for a few days, everything will work itself out!!
  3. You dont by any chance teach at the school I went to do you? If you find it frustrating to teach a troubled student then why are you teaching...just a thought. But thanks for the input!!
  4. frustrating?...Thanks anyways!
  5. Okay, so recently I have found out that I did not pass my last semester due to the math. I was needing a 90% and found out I was receiving an 87%for math. My test average was 84%!!The bad thing is that I would have graduated Dec 13, just 3 weeks shy, I am sooo frustrated but trying not to show it. After receiving the news from my teacher I left school and quickly got online to find out about other nursing schools in the area. 1 week later I was accepted at Brown Mackie college in Findlay Ohio. I start Dec 1 and will hopefully be done Jan 2010. I am beyond nervous again!! I am hearing that you need an 80% on all tests to go on to the next month and as well, you are needing a 90% on the math. I am scared that the material is still going to be very difficult and severely stressful. I am seriously trying to stay positive about the whole situation, can someone please give me words of encouragement or has this happened to you, or am I the only LOSER out here that has done this???? Somebody please shed some light!!!:nuke::nuke::nuke:
  6. If I were seriously wanting to do the whole nursing thing and the only thing holding me back were the catheters.... I would go to the school lab and get a catheter kit and just mess with it for however long it takes you to become comfortable with it, and even the procedure, slowly dig up info on catheters, like maybe kidney dysfuctions or certain preop surgeries. Dont let something this small deter you from a rewarding career! Take control!!
