  1. Hi there, Does your hospital have an oncology unit? If so, your best option is to transfer units so you can get some experience. Once you have at least a thousand hours of oncology experience, you can sit for the OCN certification exam. OCN® Certification Most hospital-based oncology units send their nurses for chemotherapy administration training, and you aren't expected to have this training before being hired. If your hospital doesn't have a dedicated oncology unit, do they have an infusion center? This is another place to get oncology experience although I think the inpatient side is a better place to start. Congratulations on wanting to become an oncology nurse - you can't find a better patient population to work with. Make sure you continue to take care of yourself though (exercise, meditation, yoga, whatever) becauseboncology can take an emotional toll. -Cristin, RN-OCN
  2. Congrats to you guys for being accepted! I'm still waiting to hear and received this email today: "Due to the volume of applications received for Nursing programs, the School of Nursing expects to notify applicants of decisions in late May. We appreciate your patience." It led me to think that no applicants had heard anything, but I guess some people have heard. I wish I understood the process. How can they notify us (some of us?) in May to start in June? I applied to the Adult NP distance learning program. Ugh. I just wish I knew so I could plan my life! -Cristin
  3. Hi everyone, I have a friend who is going back to school to become an NP and celebrating her 50th birthday. I would like to give her a nice reference book. Are there any classic texts that you felt you couldn't live without during school? Thanks, Cristin
