I'll be moving to Vancouver Island very soon and I'm very excited about it. I'm hoping to work at the Victoria General Hospital. For the nurses who work there how's the experience? ... the hospital, the city. Also anyone working at Campbell River hospital? Might be my second choice. Thanks.

In my facility we also have protocols in terms of blood test. As long as we order what's appropriate with the patient's symptoms. And if we have time, we do them ourselves in triage including EKG. Saved a patient once by doing an EKG on the spot. If we suspect a fracture to the extremeties we ask a doctor to do a quick assessment in the triage room and he gives us the order so we can send the patient right away to x-ray. All this is to save time and get things to move quicker.

Maybe it's because i'm in canada that we do things differently, but in my hospital, which is a level one trauma center, we leave the patient the least amount of time on the backboard to preserve the patient's skin integrity. As soon as the patient is back from his x-ray and CT, we (the nurses) take it as our responsibility to remove the backboard. As long as we mobilze the patient according to protocole (in block), that we leave the collar on and keep the patient in a flat supine position, the spine will stay intact. If we wait after the doctor to re-assess the patient it will take forever. And certain people like elderly patients, intoxicated patients, or patients with previous back problems aren't able to tolerate the backboard for a very long time. That's our practice and it works. And yes we do document the time that the backboard was taken off.

So this 38 yr old woman comes in because she said she accidentally defecated on the floor thinking she was just going to make a fart. For some reason that scared her. Still, the doctor asked for an EKG.

On Christmas evening I had a 30 yr old male who comes for a cut on his finger he had for 2 wks, occasional numbness to his arm and a bump on his sub-clavicular he had for 20 yrs. No pain, pt is in good condition. When asked why he specifically came on dec. 25 to see a doctor, he said it was his Christmas gift, to get checked out so he could start the new year knowing he was healthy.

i work at the montreal general hospital and even though it's an english hospital you still have to be able to express yourself in french because of the french clientele. Though the staff is pretty much bilingual, francophone patients will expect to be talked to in french. And it's also important for you if you want to be able to gather the patient's history. As far as the exam goes it's mandatory for everyone. A collegue of mine who had 20 years of experience in ontario, decided to work in montreal. 3 years later the order realized she hadn't done her french exam. after failing 3 times, they revoked her right to practice in the province until she succeeds the test. so, you might not need to be fluent, but you do need to have a basic understanding of the french language. hope this post helps you out. if you want more info ask the oiiq they'll help you out. aidan13.
