ANY one know of a school where I can go from ADN to Nurse practitioner?
I have looked into University of Cincinnati, they have an ADN to NP program. They require some classes but you don't have to get your BSN. I think Xavier also has a ADN to masters program, but I'm not sure how it works.

I need help to succeed in nursing school
Hi Cindy 17! I too am now a second(and final) year student! It is tough! It sounds like you are on the right track with your studying habits. I've noticed that the questions that they give us for tests are similar to nclex, yet they make them confusing by using horrible wording. Not sure if that's the same for you or not. Never over analyze a question.:) I've been using saunders nclex review books, questions in the textbook and on the cd-rom that come with them. We use the Elsevier Evolve system and they have online question banks also. Another thing is to ask your instructor what you could do to improve, or what there strategy is for exams. lol If they'll tell you! Always watch for what they emphasize in lecture. I hope this helps. Good Luck to you!

help with care plan
Hi, well I'm a student like you, but I'll try to help. First off, do you have a care plan book? If not, I like ours which is: Nursing Diagnosis Handbook: An evidence-Based Guide to Planning Care, By Ackley and Ladwig, 8th edition. Next, I don't know much about your pt. I was told to think about what exactly is the problem that is keeping my pt. in the hospital/LTC. Then choose my diagnosis appropriately. I looked in my book and I did not see a Risk for DVWR, I did see DVWR. There are mild, moderate, and severe defining characteristics. Check those and figure out what pertains to your pt. There are also physiological, psychological and situational Related factors. And then your interventions and rationales. A care plan book would really help. I wouldn't know what to do without mine. I don't know if any of this helps, and I can't do much more without details. Take a look at some of the other posts about care plans on here. We have an awesome group here who have posted about them in great detail. It will give u a good idea on how to write a good care plan. Good luck!

unbelievable... in today's world
I'm working as a Phlebotomist at a busy clinic while I attend nursing school. At our facility it is a HUGE no no to draw blood without gloves. We could aquire a giant fine from our laboratory licensing body, the College of American Pathologists. While we Can feel for veins without gloves, once you have a needle or tube in your hand you must have gloves on. It is not just knowing anatomy, I have plenty of patients that are very hard sticks. Cancer patients, Transplant pts, etc , sometimes can be almost impossible unless you have very sensitive and experienced hands. Although sometimes we have to get creative and you definetly Do need to know your anatomy!

Shaved Mons - Phenomenon
True Gila. It may come back. They say the best candidates have sporifice coverage from the beginning. I guess you just go back till it doesn't come back.lol otherwise it could look kinda tufty.lol I'm hoping it works for me. I got time for them to improve their technique. lol at unit and area. Being pregnant and trying to landscape was hard. Being a pretzel made me tired.

Shaved Mons - Phenomenon
I've just started nursing school so I guess I'll be seeing (or not seeing) for myself in a few quarters. lol Actually I have a friend who had it all lasered. It is pricey, but worth it apparently. Never shave again! Or Wax. lol Sooo, one thing that's on my "I've graduated and have money now list" is Laser! Can't wait for the freedom. lol:D

It seems like I've done nothing but read my fundamentals book for three weeks. lol We started clinicals this past week and WOW paperwork galore! So far I really like it. Being here on allnurses has really prepared me for the long road ahead. So Break A Leg everybody and study hard!

How to help fearful/anxious patients
I'm a NS and working as a Phlebotomist at a very busy clinic. I've noticed that Pt.'s that are very nervous respond well to a no-nonsense kind of confidence. I really have to gauge each Pt's level of anxiety. Some are easier to read than others. If I've noticed any fear I always ask because the quiet ones will need the reclining chair! Most of the time if I can get them talking about themselves (hobby, nice shirt, etc.) or the weather it relaxes them somewhat. That and the "this is how it's going to be" type of confidence usually work together nicely. Now I better not miss! Not exactly the same setting, but hope it helps. :nuke: Also, I sometimes ask exactly WHAT or Why they are afraid. Gives me a chance to educate and sometimes it really works. Every Pt is different. lol

How do your nurse assistants get shift report?
As an STNA I've worked at many different places. I've worked as pool and regular staff. I think the best places had strong leadership from nurses, less cattyness from the other aides, and an appreciation for our hard work. Who hasn't heard "an aide is a dime a dozen". I think if we are appreciated it works great. Part of feeling appreciated is knowing that higher level staff think your important enough to educate. Not just inservice, but the whole "we are a team everyone has a specific job which overlaps into great patient care." I know as a new aide I didn't have too much of a clue as to how my care interpreted into the big picture. As for lazy and defiant NA's, make them feel important? Many times I didn't recieve report at all. Grr And a nurse talking to me for report? lol Once in a year of blue moons. lol It was more as an as needed basis. I personally think report with the nurses and aides together would be great. After awhile (especially a new NA) you'd start to figure things out and be able to prioritize easier. btw, not saying your facility isn't appreciative, just my

Down in the dumps
Hi, I'm not a nurse yet, so I can't help too much. I don't even live in New York, but thought I'd check out the forum. I've dealt with depression for most of my life. I've finally gotten a hold of it and am doing great. It was a long road for me. It sounds as if you need some support. You're so down on yourself! You passed your program and the NCLEX, that says alot right there. You can do it and you did. If you hated it I wish you would have done what you love. I couldn't make up my mind either.I love science and medicine and people, just not organization, but I'm getting better. lol I think it was my depression. Everything feels overwhelming and impossible. You look at everyone else and wonder why you can't do what they do. Now it sounds as if jobs may be hard to come by right now. I don't know about NY but Ohio is having some freezing going on. Especially in central Oh. So in this time of crappy job market, you've got to be the standout candidate. That means confident, positive, smart, communicative, looking good, fun to be around. It's almost impossible to fake all that when you feel like crap. So HR will see it and make decisions based upon that. I say see a professional psychiatrist. See if he recommends meds. That would be my first step. I avoided seeing a psych dr. forever! What a HUGE mistake. I felt ashamed. ( and lazily unmotivated about my health) Now I don't hesitate to take care of myself! I'm important and so are you! We need good nurses. Get healthy and get out there! Now here's the healthcare mantra: quit smoking, eat right and Exercise! lmao I still say meds first. Then you'll feel so good you'll FEEL like going out and doing something for yourself. All this will improve your outlook. AND your job search. You're a nurse, you know all this. Pick up the phone tomorrow and make an appointment, no reason to suffer. Modern medicine is great. And psych md's are quirky themselves. Sorry so soapboxy long. It's late for me:)

WIA Funding pulled
It's good to hear that it may not take long. It's a great program. At least my prereqs are done!

WIA Funding pulled
Not sure where to post this, just thought people would like to know. The down turn in the economy is hitting home hard in my town. Our local WIA office is being "audited" and there may be no funding for next quarter. They were not sure if they would have answers in a week or a month. Here's the kicker..I asked how long an audit usually takes they said, "we've never been audited before." :eek:Well, hopefully it's not as bad as it sounds.

Phlebotomy Certificate?
I'm a pre-nursing student who has finished most of my prereq's and i thought phlebotomy would be useful. I took it last quarter and our clinicals are this next quarter. I really like it. After awhile as a nurse I'd get it, but I didn't want to be the nurse who can't do an IV. lol It's really raised my confidence! I also wanted training so I could find a job. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend on classes that aren't required.
