Palm Beach State LPN Program
julzann, i just got accepted into the pbsc lpn program on august 23, 2010. i am in my 1st class right now, so i am a newbie. pbsc accepts 20 students for lpn. first of all, dont' let people scare you that it's "hard or impossible" to get in. pillam is right, you do have to work hard, but it's not impossible. you must prepare now. i got all psyched up when i applied because i listened to people. i finally ignored them and prepared, and got in. so, take it from the "expert" who just got in, lol... see my replies below to your questions. first, they require you to take the pro-calc test with a passing score of 80%. i've already began studying for it. this math test is not hard. it is basic conversions. make sure you go to the lpn website, download the practice worksheets, do it 5 times, dont look at your previous answers, time yourself, and you will be fine. i spent 1 week doing that, and passed with a 100 on the first try (and i am not a math wiz). just practice the sheets, and you will pass the pro-calc. the ones that dont pass are those that didn't een bother to do the practice sheets. and the worse case if you didn't pass? you can retake it again, and again. so no sweat. first, they go off of a point system. i believe you can get a total of 19pts. that is correct. i got 13 points. if you have 11+ you are looking very good. no one gets 19pts. if they do, they ususally go for rn ;-) the teas test can give you a total of up to 8pts. i got the full 8 points. i spent 4 weeks reading and doing all the practice test in the teas book. you must do this if you want to do well on teas. this is where you will set yourself apart from others. do 1 subject per week, space it out, nothing to stress over abt it. just like pillam said, this is the "icing" on the cake. do well on teas, and that is a guarantee you're getting in. palm beach county residency is 1pt. i got 0 point, bc i am not from pb county. health care experience is 2pts. i am a pca in the hospital for exactly 6 months when i applied in june 2010. that was my first healthcare job. thank god i got that job, so i got the 2 points. and the only reason i even got that job, was because i was a volunteer at the hospital. you need to volunteer (4 or 8 hrs a week) so you can look good. every hospital is desperate for volunteers, it is very rewarding. education - aa or as degree is 2pts, bachelors is 3pts and masters is 4pts. i earned 3 points for bachelors. my class of 20 that just started in aug 2010, there are 4 people with bachelors, a couple with associate. (the rest are high school diploma, or ged, or foreign students with neither). health program completion - 2pts. that would be like a cna certificate, which i dont have. nothing much you can do about this, unless you want to start attending night school to get your cna certificate. 1 girl in my class did that, and she got in. this was her 2nd try. her first try, she did not have cna and missed 2 points. dont stress over this. just do well on teas and procalc. strategies for college success completion - 2pts. i did not get any points for this. i decided in may 2010 that i want to do lpn in august 2010. so obviously, i had no time to take scs class over the summer. you have time, take it. it will be an easy a, and you get the 2 freebie points (to make up for the lack of experience you have or whatever). i hope that answers all of your questions, and helped you in a direction to the lpn. yes, rn is "harder" to get in, and there is no shame in starting with lpn. i know a lot of great lpn's out there (my 3 aunts), and they are perfectly fine with lpn (never went for rn). lpn is just as honorable as rn. later on down the road, you can always do rn. for now, put 100% energy into getting accepted in lpn.

Nova BSN program for Jan 2011
boo and danwrome, have you been accepted yet? i applied aug 16, and still waiting. just fyi..... sept 13th: i went to nova to make sure that a.o. has all of my documentation (2 letters of recomm, 3 transcripts, etc). thank god i checked, because my app was marked "incomplete." nova claimed they never received my fau transcript. i freaked out! so basically, my application has been sitting there collecting dust since aug 16th i returned to nova immediately the next day and handed the fau transcript to a.o. i am not taking chances of mailing or requesting anything online. sept 15th - a.o. left a msg indicating that everything is now "complete" and it's being forward to the admissions for review. so make sure you guys check that everything is in, so that it wont hinder your admissions process! i talked to ao when i was there... 1) she said about 500 applicants applied for winter 2011. when i applied for winter 2009, back then, it was about 250 applicants (and about 500 for fall term due to baptist scholarship). nova would pick 125 people to interview, then from there, select 100 to admit. that was the old way. now with 500 and 1,000 applicants, they got rid of interviews as of winter 2011. 2) i asked her why some people already received the acceptance letters so early. she said that those applicants with "high" gpa's are notified immediately. she wouldn't tell me what is considered "high". and those with the "not so high" gpa will all have to wait until october 1st for notification. ie: my friend with 3.6 applied august 13, and was accepted 2 weeks later. i applied august 16 and still haven't heard anything. then again, i only haev 3.2 and my app was marked "incomplete". you would think they would notify you that it's incomplete, instead of letting it sit there. oh well. so, good luck! let me know when you get the good news!

Nova Sooutheastern University January 2011
hi dawnrome, any luck? did you get into nsu yet? 3.6 gpa is very good for nsu,but apparently not good enough for fau! i used to have 3.8 and fau didn't want to give me the time of day. unbelievable! i applied to nsu on aug 16th. make sure you call them up, and verify that they receive all of your official transcripts, otherwise, your app will be considered "incomplete" and they won't look at it. good luck, let me know if you hear anything from nsu!!!!

NSU EntryBSN Program Fall 2010
I made sure I handed everything in person (the app, the essay, 2 transcripts, 2 letters). The girl at the front desk (Kelley) scanned everything in front of me, so I know they got everything. However, I had to request FAU to send 1 transcript to Nova (I didn't hand it in person). As of today, I've only received 2 confirmation emails for my 3 transcripts. Huumm...not good. Looks like I will have to hand the FAU transcript in person ASAP, like this Friday. I dont want to have them reject me due to "missing" paperwork. Did you apply for financial aid right after you turned in your application, or after you got accepted? Unless I win a $40k lottery, I will need to apply for Financial Aid loans as well. Did u have to make appt to see Fin Aid advisor?

Nova Southeastern University Entry-Level BSN Program
Boo, Interesting... You applied in June, and got accepted in Sept; Jennifer023 applied August 13, and got accepted within 3 weeks; and Karinat applied June 11, got accepted by July 8. I guess it's all different for everyone (not so much on a first come first served basis, or which campus the applicant had selected). Since you had to wait 3 months, I can relax now!!! Since I applied August 16th, I guess I wont hear back until October then. Let's hope for the best. BTW - I applied to Davie.

NSU EntryBSN Program Fall 2010
Jennifer, 3 weeks?!! Wow that was quick! That's AWESOME you found out so soon. Since I applied 3 days after you (August 16th), I am hoping to hear back sometimes this week or next week. I applied for Davie campus. I turned in a paper application (did not apply online). Maybe that's what taking so long. Did you receive any automatic email confirmations from NSU (for your transcripts and other documents)?

NSU EntryBSN Program Winter 2011
hi everyone, i'm sorry if i'm asking the same question again. i just posted something on another thread, but realized that it was an outdated thread (i wasn't sure if anyone was checking that thread or not). it seems like everyone has been accepted for jan 2011 already! i turned in the app (in person) on august 15, and haven't heard anything yet. i know it's been only 3 weeks, but anxiety is kicking in high gear! did you apply in person or online? when did you apply? when did you find out? any info is greatly appreciated!

Nova Southeastern University Entry-Level BSN Program
boo13812002, i am applying for jan 2011 also. i turned in the app on august 9, 2010, and haven't heard "acceptance" news yet. i have received 4 confirmation emails so far, indicating that they received my transcripts, essays, etc. ashley odland replied to my email saying that we won't hear anything until october 1st. i applied for jan 2009 once before, and was accepted with a 3.6 gpa. my 2 friends were also accepted with a 3.4 and 3.5 gpa. we all survived a grueling 5 hour interview. due to various reasons, i turned down nsu in jan 2009 and went to broward college to pursue the asn instead (whoops). now, i am re-applying the 2nd time with a 3.2 gpa. meanwhile, my 2 friends who started jan 2009 are thriving at nova. they are now semester 6 students! (7 semesters total). good news: nova will no longer conduct interviews as of jan 2011! if anyone hear anything from nova, pls post!

Career Change want to become an RN confused
great, sounds like you've made a right choice! just a few more things: 1. if you want to get into the august 2010 program, you can apply between march-may 2010. 2. they will take the grade from enc1101, which is your "c" (that happened to me too! i got c in enc1101, a in enc1102. they took the "c") 3. most students who are working in the healthcare industry already, or have all the certs (like in your case) are usually exempt from those silly 5 cae classes with no problem. (they are only 2-4 hrs for each class). 4. however, you probably won't be exempt from the hcp0130 core class. a lot of students have tried, but they will not accept it. it's really easy class, you meet once a week for 6 weeks. it's pass/fail grade. you can easily get this done. they teach you stuff like how to take blood pressure, moving patients, infection control, etc. you will be required to take a weekly test, which are very easy as well. get a 73% on each test, and you pass. you can take this hcp at bcc, online, or one of those votech place. 5. bcc accepts students on a 16 point scale. you earn a number according to your gpa. so, whoever gets the most points, gets accepted in. 6. if you did hosa, you are in luck! you get 5 free points added to your final points (i didn't get this). 7. for the jan 2009 term, a total of 300 students were accepted into bcc's rn for all 3 campuses. my campus (north campus) accepted 125. we lost 25 students after nursing 1 (in march 2009) and lost 50 more students after nursing 2 (in may 2009). we are now in our 3rd class (gi/gu), and we are down to 50 students. this class will be over end of june 2009, we'll see how many is left. good luck to you and get that 'a' in chm (to make up for your c in enc1101)

Career Change want to become an RN confused
see my replies in red bold below it will cost you $6,000 to do rn at bcc. it's just my opinion only, but going the lpn then rn route does not make any sense. why are you going "backwards"? you need to focus on doing well in chm, apply to bcc, then continue to take micro. going for lnp then rn will take you another 3 yrs. hope that helps! congrats for making the decicsion to pursue nursing. it's an amazing field. once you get into the program, you will be glad you went this route:yeah:

NE1 have any info on broward community college nursing program?
gogators2007, to add to what others have posted, here are your 3 answers: that's correct, you can not apply until you complete all of your pre-reqs. there is no way you can start august 2009. i was in the same situtation like you. i completed ap2 and micro by the end of summer 2008, and wanted to start augsut 2008 - it was not possible. i had to wait one entire fall semester before i can start in january 2009. perhaps this is a good thing for you - you have 2 options: (1) go to work, save up some money, because it's not recommended that you work when you start your rn in jan 2010. or (2) you can go ahead and prepare yourself by taking statistics (easier than college algebra), nutrition, and human development. the rationale for option (2) is that you seem to have an interest in bsn. so, why not do something productive during your semester off from aug 2009 - dec 2009? later on, after you graduate in dec 2011, and decided to further your education, you already have the required 3 classes out of the way! you can do your bsn at fau, fiu, or bcc. bcc should be ready with their rn-bsn by the time you graduate from rn in 2012. it's currently in process of having the curriculum created, hiring the nurse educators, and getting funded - but it will happen for sure. as you can see - i've put much thought into this, bc i did the same thing! i already had a bachelors degree from fau, then i went back to school for the rn at bcc. i was debating between nova, fau, or bcc. after extensive research, i opted for bcc. nova was too expensive ($40k for their 27 month bsn program). fau was too competitive (only 60 seats are available, and even with my descent gpa, it would take a miracle to get accepted. going to bcc was the best decision i've ever made. later on, if i wanted to do bsn, i already have 2 classes out of they way (human development and nutrition). #2 - you were asking if bcc was "the best" in the state. i assume you were talking about "the best nclex scores"? bcc may not have "the best campus clinical labs" or "the best classes" or the "best looking uniforms", but i can assure you they have one of the highest nclex passing rates. that's all it matters. in the end, you finish your rn program, you make all a's or b's but if you can't pass your nclex, it's over. so yes, bcc does pretty well producing capable students who can pass the nclex and become nurses. bcc produces students who do the most clinical hours at the hospitals. bcc pushes their students and challenges them to the extreme! you can check out the doh (department of health) website if you want to see where bcc stands. it's at 84% passing rate. not bad at all! keiser's rn is 64% (shocker); city college's rn is 54% (another shocker); and um is 73%. interesting how they can produce good doctors but not good nurses?! so there you go, the results speak for themselves. why pay $30,000 at these 3 schools, and you're not even sure if they've prepared you properlyt for the nclex? in my opinion, bcc is the "best" when it comes to the cost of your education, and what you can get out of it in 20 months. (dont' get me wrong....barry, nova, and fau have awesome passing grades, in the 90% and above passing range....but hey, bcc is not too bad). #3 - one of the reason why bcc produces good nurses too, is because of their clinical hours. bcc students are required to complete 1,008 hours! i suggest you call up fau and other bsn schools, and see how many hours their students do, and you will see why bcc grads are so prepared when they are out in the field. even if they are a rookie, they are ready. hope that helps!

NE1 have any info on broward community college nursing program?
layna420, see my replies in blue below. tiandmoe hello everyone, i am so confused. i keep hearing all these horror stories about broward. some say it's true and some say don't believe it. there are 2 users on this site who seems to know a lot of info, and have provided accurate info so far. i am new to this site, and everything they've said so far is accurate. i would trust their input. look for "bumblebeern" and "leavingteaching4rn" replies if you want to know what's rumors, and what's facts. i want to apply for the may program at north campus. i have a 3.9 gpa and i am always on top of my grades. do you think i can keep up my grades or will it ruin at broward? i have a 3.4, and accepted into the program. just like you, i work hard for a's and b's. bcc north is a good institution, you will do fine, you will learn a lot, and you will pass the nclex. check out the doh website (dept of health), if you want to see which schools in the state do well on their nclex. bcc does just fine! yes, rn program will be hard, but you didn't get into this expecting it will be easy. it's up to you if you do well or not. since you have a 3.9, that's impecable! yes, you should definitely apply for may 2009, no doubt. also, i don't have the health career core but i heard if you are currently employed, they will wave that even if i am not certified. is that true? if you are employed by a healthcare institution, and have the certificate, then yes, they will waive it. otherwise, you must take the hcp core class, no other way out (this came from my 2 friends who work in the hospital. one was unit secretary and was certified, she was waived. the other one had to take the hcp. it's easy, dont worry. take it sheridan or mcfatter if you dont want to take it at bcc) any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

NE1 have any info on broward community college nursing program?
hi, i have been accepted into [wiki]nova southeastern university[/wiki] and [wiki]broward college[/wiki] for january 2009. after a lot of thought, and talking it over with a lot of rn's who are bcc graduates, and non-bcc gradudates who have bsn (from nsu, uf, and fau), i've decided to accept the seat at bcc. 5 questions, any input is greatly appreciated: 1. i was at the orientation 1 week ago, there were 170 students in the morning session and 164 in the afternoon session. about 50 out of those 164 were "alternates". i'm just curious, what are alternates? are they the ones who were not accepted in the first round, and now they are accepted because the "accepted students" didn't register on time, or failed drug tests? 2. the tabe test that we have to take the 3rd week in process i, how long is that test? couple hours? is it math and reading only? lets say if you dont score a 12th grade level, can you retake the tabe test? is it a one time test, or do you need to retake it every 8 weeks like the math dosage calculation test? 3. has anyone volunteer or done their clinicals at northwest regional in margate? how is it? 4. in hospital clinicals, the ratio of nurse to students is about 1:12? 5. for rn's out there: has anyone did the hca or broward health scholarship program? if so, what was your "2 year commitment" experience w/ the hospital like, once you graduated? (ie: same salary as those who did not do the scholarship program? do you get to pick which hospital to work for once you graduate?) by the way, as you all know, bc will be offering bachelors degree in education, starting feb 2009. there are a lot of speculation if bc will offer bsn next or not. my co-worker's wife, who is a director for c.e. at central campus confirmed that bc will be seeking approval for bsn in 2009, and if the curriculum is approved by 2010, then we will have a bsn program! so, for people like me who will start in jan 2009, and graduate in august 2010 -- now you can have an option to pursue a bsn at bc! it's a great opportunity (instead of trying to get into nsu or fau).

Interview
cgonzal6, if you were invited for the interview with nova, you have a pretty good chance. nova nursing program has been around since 2004, and from previous statistics, about 600 applicants apply for the august term, and 400-500 apply for january term. (you have "less" competition if you apply for teh january term, lol). approx. 150 applicants get invited for the interview, and 100 will be selected for the bsn. so yes, you have a good chance if you got the interview. i got these facts from nova. now of course, you still have to do well in the interview (ie: answer the questions to a panel of 3-4 people, and write an essay). what they are looking for is your interporsonal skills and your personality. you can have a good gpa, but if you can't carry yourself professionally during the interview, you are out of the game. speaking of which, i have an interview oct 8th!
