  1. OMG...LOL! I so agree to all of that!! I also get the same thing when we are doing the baby paperwork and the mom has to sign it all. The dad's get all offended, asking why they don't sign anything, and the explanation that "we know that she is the mom since she gave birth, but we don't know for sure about the dad" definitely doesn't make it easier, I love it when someone comes to pick up their baby from the nursery and asks for them by their first name, we have never put a baby's first name on the crib card, and I am not going to remember them all!
  2. And I thought I was crazy for having to have my patient cards at work organized perfectly, with their name written (in black sharpie, of course) in the upper left corner and room number on the upper right. They all have to be perfectly spaced and if they are out of alignment I have to fix them even if I am so busy I can't eat lunch! I have a few things like this relating to work, and if I let myself think about germs too much I can get pretty OCD with the handwashing, but overall I don't consider myself a germophobe. Since I became a nurse though, I have realized that I no longer eat from anyone else's plate, even my husband and kids; the thought just grosses me out! And if food sits out for even a little while I won't eat it. The thought of what has been growing on that pizza that has been sitting in its box in the break room for 5 hours makes me nauseous, especially when I see co-workers eating it! OMG... I AM a nutcase!!! :rotfl:
  3. Yeah, she might not want to go to days and may consider it as much a punitive action as if she had been written up or formally disciplined.
  4. I currently work in an almost constantly understaffed unit (Womens- Postpartum, nursery, L&D) in a small hospital. We work 12 hour shifts but have to be at work 20 minutes early for report, 30 minutes are automatically deducted from our pay each shift for lunch and believe me...there is NO mention of those 15 minute paid breaks, EVER. If it is recognized as being busy by the charge, she can put in for everyone to receive a no lunch for the shift, but it doesn't happen as often as it should, if you got even 10 minutes to shovel something in your mouth while charting many consider that break enough. When we are super busy I have been there 2 hours past shift end finishing charting. That makes for a 15 hour day excluding travel, many of the times with NO breaks or lunches, heck I went a 13 hour shift once with barely anything to drink, and only got to pee once! If by any chance there is enough staff to cover you for a break, the managment considers that we are "overstaffed" and send people home on call, therefore we have not had time to eat even when we weren't busy, because we are stretched to the limit on staff. I don't have a problem with someone sleeping on an unpaid break, I have provided more than enough work hours "free" to make up for any small naps I might want to take if given the chance. I don't know my hospital's policy on sleeping during breaks, never asked because I am not usually that sleepy on nights and I know most of the girls I work with would help out if we needed a nap that desperately. Anyway, got a little off topic at first, but it sure sounds like some people work at some really good places if they make you take your breaks; I feel like a criminal sometimes just asking someone to come sit with my babies while I take a short break. :uhoh21:
  5. I don't think I would consider it a matter of trust, just a matter of comfort. As a woman who has worked in OB for 1 1/2 years now, and has had to endure more Pap smears than I can count, I would have to say that I prefer a woman. It's not really easy to explain, all I can say is that at least a woman knows what it is like to have to lie there in that vulnerable position, with your goods spread open for all to see (excuse the frankness). Many of the patients I have taken care of would not mind, some would due partly to culture and modesty issues. I have never understood why they don't mind the MD being a male and decline to have a male nurse, but that is the choice of the individual. Appreciate the opinion and point of view, but I am thinking that a lot more women have babies and ob/gyn procedures than men do TURPS, and that if given the choice, many men WOULD decline a female being present for that or say a vasectomy. JMHO :chuckle
  6. Thanks ChrisA! I was always curious about the exact reason and time it was added. I had read somewhere that it was the 40's but apparently that was wrong. Thanks again for the education.
  7. Well, I am not entirely sure of the reason why it was added but I know WHEN it was added so that gives me an idea. It was added to the Pledge in the 40'2 around WWII. I think it was added because of the atrocities that were going on in Europe etc, to increase patriotism due to the war, and someone wanted to show that the U.S. was a nice "god fearing" country. I think that this addition was entirely unnecessary because you do NOT have to believe in God to think that war is bad, that killing people is evil, etc. As a matter of fact, it seems there is far more killing and war in the name of religion than in the absence of it. As for jwk's opinion, he/she is perfectly entitled to it about grammar, vocabulary, or even the assumption that atheists and agnostics trample on the rights of the religious, but that right needs to be tempered with courtesy. I can speak with a good vocabulary or I can dumb it down a bit when talking to my kids etc. I prefer to think that LPNguy was complimenting us that we would understand him rather than him talking down to us. I Would like to know how you think that religious people's rights are trampled on though? People who are agnostic, atheist, or of alternate religions than Judeo-Christian can not freely express their views without being attacked. If we posted huge signs outside our houses that said judgemental things like I see on church billboards we would be tarred and feathered or worse. If we post a bumper sticker on our car that relates to our alternate beliefs we have to worry about our car being keyed, broken into, or otherwise vandalized by someone who disagrees; whereas people can drive around with those freaking fish or crosses with the little kid etc and no one says or does anything. If I sent my kid to school wearing a cross or church t-shirt no one would say a thing, but if I sent them wearing a pentacle they would be sent home to change immediately. If there have been some vocal, rude, or abrasive people who abuse the religious rights then maybe it is because they are so angry at being oppressed and suppressed that they think they have the right. I don't agree with that tactic but I can certainly understand the desire to let someone have it when they point blank offend me after they realize I am Wiccan and do not believe in god.
  8. I have to disagree. For one thing there are cases of animals practicing homosexual behaviors, for another....Christianity is FAR from the oldest religion! There are NUMEROUS religions that predate Christianity by hundreds of years, Paganism,Egyptian religions, Zoroastrianism, and Judaism just to name several. Polytheistic religions have been around far longer than Christianity, but Christians choose to ignore them because to believe so would contradict the bible. As for science proving a higher power, how does it do that? I tend to think that it does the opposite. The age of the earth and fossil records of man contradict the bible's timeline, the bible states that the animals were created as they are now, and there is fossil evidence to the contrary proving an evolution. Just a few examples. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but don't bah humbug someone based on yours.
  9. I agree about the spell check, LOL. Anyway to continue off topic, I have to address some of the things you brought up. About the laws on murder, thieving etc being biblical, I don't agree. I think you can be human and moral and good and not be a follower of Jesus. In other words, murder is not wrong just because "thou shalt not kill" is a commandment etc. It is a basic crime against humanity and I am sure has been considered wrong for long before the bible has been around. I don't want this to sound offensive, truly I don't...but as for Jesus' teachings being forced on people: what about the Crusades? What about the Missions the Spanish forced on the Native Americans? What about the Inquisition? There are many more examples through history if one cares to look, some not all that long ago depending on how you look at it. The Pledge BTW was altered to add the words "under God" in the 40's. Before that the Pledge was religion free. And as far as I know, the kids are forced to say it....every day at school. I know mine are, and every effort to remove the words "under god" has been met with resistance and extreme religious uproar. I hope that everyone can express their religious or non-religious beliefs without fear of retribution, right now it seems that only certain groups are allowed to do so. I see no reason for anyone to change their behaviors or religious practices as long as they keep them to themselves and don't push them on others.
  10. I beg to differ on the "required to adhere" portion of your statement. Someone earlier in the thread talked about laws made due to the bible, and I have to bring up one new one in particular that upsets me. The recent passage of the "marriage definition" laws in about 11 states and proposed federal law by President Bush. This law is based PURELY on the bible's views toward marriage and it has been forced on a significant part of the population now. Marriage should not be defined biblically and there definitely should not be laws limiting it as they are, and I think this applies no matter what your view of homosexuals. Review all evidence in our society and I believe you will find more instances of laws and practices that we all have to adhere to that are religiously based. What about the Pledge??
  11. I am a Wiccan and I have prayed with patients before because I did not want to offend them. I just remained silent and focused my energies and good thoughts toward the patient while they prayed to their God. I don't know if this would be offensive to them, but then again they shouldn't assume everyone is Christian and ask them to pray with them either. As a Wiccan I am not offended by prayer, it is just positive thoughts being directed toward a goal after all, but the mention of "God", "heaven" etc would bother me a little. A more generic prayer might be in order such as what is suggested by Fraggle. But in the end.... I would be dead, so I don't know that it would really matter!
