nursing career and legal matter
i'm very ashamed of admitting this, but the anoniminity of the internet helps... i was caught shoplifting at a local store - i am not sure why i did it, and that is not the point of my thread - i just thought about the possibility that this could affect my nursing license?? i live in north carolina if that makes a reference.

What are they looking for? Office job...
My first nursing job was at a Novant Family Practice IN NC. The way I got that job believe it or not, was I made really nice looking resumes and went directly to these doctor's offices, and the job I got was MY doctor because the nurse for my doctor recognized my name and told the manager to call me, once I was hired, THEN they put the job up on the "system", so I could officially apply thru there. Maybe this would help:idea:

Stupidest comlaint of the night award...

1st nursing job in a doctor's office - a little wierded out
North carolina .... I will look into it. I know they don't say "I'm a registered nurse" but they do say "one of the nurses". But I wonder.... as far as giving IM injections or starting IV's - who can do that? Only nurses? And I would want to go to another job, it's just that as a new grad, in this economy, or at least in this state, this was the only option that came up - I have had no other phone calls

1st nursing job in a doctor's office - a little wierded out
hello to you all fellow nurses! I was super excited when I was finally offered an RN job, but I was extremely nervous too. I always thought i would start in a hospital setting, but instead i was offered a job at a doc's office (internal med) where the staff is split right in the middle - 1/2 are vietnamese, 1/2 are spanish-speakers (me = spanish speaker :) And right off the first day, i was majorly weirded out. Ok, so tell me why all the people that give the shots and draw labs and collect samples are called NURSES? I'm the only RN there, the other 2 are Med. assistants, 1 is a phlebotomist, 1 is a CNA working part time here, and 1 doesn't even have a degree in anything related to health care. And get this - that last one - the one with no health care degree - is the one in charge.... what the FLIP!?!?!? Here's the thing - He is the one that is orienting me, when he introduces himself, he says "I am one of the nurses", he draws blood, starts IV's (!!!!!!!), gives meds (almost all are IM injections)..... Am I delusional? While I was in nursing school (and please feel free to chime in on this one), it was expressed to me in VERY STRONG words that I should NEVER introduce myself as "I'm one of the nurses" but rather "I'm a STUDENT nurse". Every time I charted something, it had to be signes ",SN" not "RN" - why? I thought it was b/c it was illegal to be representing myself as a nurse when in fact I was only a student nurse. Even on this Allnurses forum, I specifically remember that when I chose my username at first, I chose "Sakura_SN" b/c it was in the guidelines that I could not represent myself as an RN until I got the title. So why is it that in this doc's office it is ok for this gentleman, as well as the other ppl, to represent themselves as nurses??? and most importantly - I am worried that by me, as an RN, being there might put my license in jeopardy. I know that certain advice can't be posted in here, but maybe i can be directed as to where to find info about this. ...... the other less important thing that weirded me out was the Point system. Apparently, when you do something wrong, you get a "point". This point is then sent out to EVERYONE in the office, for example, "Jane doe has received a point b/c she did not key in the right code for the CBC machine". Well now everyone knows what you did wrong. So I asked, well what happens when you get a point? This was the explanation: "You don't want to accumulate too many points, you may get a verbal warning. If you want the point taken away, it may be docked from your pay or YOU MAY BUY THE DOCTOR LUNCH" what?!?!!??! Why is it that that explanation made a big siren go off in my head??? ugh... I already hate my job and I've only been there a week. I have no idea how I am supposed to stick it out for a year (that's my goal - I want to be able to put my experience in a piece of paper and write my ticket elsewhere) sorry for the long entry p.s - please don't close my thread - I really do want feed back

what to do in the meantime...
I have big issues with the fact that I speak fluent spanish and no one is hiring me..... i put it on my resume, it's on of the headings : LANGUAGES - so it's not like i stuck it in the middle of no where on my resume, not only that, but in EVERY application i put it, i type it on more than once "fluent in spanish".... and yet i've only gotten 1 interview and that was only b/c the assistant nsg. manager at my ER told them to give me an interview.... i wish i was getting "eaten alive" p.s- in case you're wondering, i did not get the job i interviewed for (even though i told them, hey I speak SPANISH - u would think that would come in handy in an ER where 50% of the pop is spanish speaking)

CAREER STIMULUS PACKAGE from Staples
Well I chose a card that had a stethescope desing on it and just put my name, title and contact info, I figured I'll just attach it to my resume. However, when I went to officemax (http://officemax.com/catalog/category.jsp?catId=cat1590154&cm_re=ImPress-_-ImPress-_-week23Home), They suggest to put a mini-resume on your card, which I think it's an awesome idea, that way, you can hand it out if you ever meet a potential client and then follow up with a resume later. Just some ideas p.s - if you use officemax, you can get 250 business cards for $5 (including shipping) if you design them online using the link above.... I'm a sucker for office supplies - can't you tell?????

New Student
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!! You are embarking on a journey of self discovery, ups & downs. I do not know what your school will be like, but I can tell you nursing schoolis like no other program. I was an engineering major b4 and I thought nursing school kicked my booty! But I don't mean to scare you. The best thing to do is that first day of nursing class, just breathe and take it in. When you get that syllabus, read the chapters and stay ahead. You don't necessarily have to take a gazillion notes while you do this home reading. Just read to be familiar with the info. Then go to class and pay attention, take notes. Then go home and review your notes and whatever you were confused on, re-read. Join study groups - trust me, your fellow nursing classmates will be your biggest support. If your school makes you go to that mandatory library tour, take advantage - our school's "library" was actually the hospital's library and on their website they had all kinds of nursing books that helped me dearly when developing care plans (just wait til you have to do those!) Speaking of care plans (it may not make sense to you now since you haven't done one yet,but just keep in mind when you do have to do one) - don't rip your hair out! Ask your instructor for help, and when you get it back revised the first time, do not panic if there is writing all over it - this critique will help you with each and everyone of those plans. Hope this helps breathe and ENJOY! You made it in - that's an accomplishement in itself

New grad RN wanting to relocate to Houston

what to do in the meantime...
all of your responses are so encouraging - thank you fellow nurses! and YES - I passed!!!!!!!!!! second time's the charm lol. I got my license here in NC so I'm part of teh compact state, which is an advantage. I've mainly focused here in NC but I started applying in TX since my fiancee has a condo over there. I have wanted to continue volunteering at the local free clinic, depending on my work schedule - so now I have more motive to go - thanks for your ideas - please keep them coming!

what to do in the meantime...
hello to you all! i have posted some on here, i don't know if this is the best place for the following post: i graduated in dec. 08 and i didn't pass the boards the first go around and so, my job was not held for me. which means i am stuck as a sec/tech in the er i work as a prn person. everyday is a struggle for me. i know that there are literally hundreds if not thousands of new grad rn's that are in the same situation as me - no new grad jobs. i hate it when the interviewers say " so you have no experience". this is where i say "yes i do - i work as a tech at a local er for 2 years, i had my preceptorship in the icu where i excelled, and i am fluent in spanish." interviewer: "but no experience as a nurse" and so i breakdown later. unfortunately, i thought my family didn't think anything of it - my mom works as a tech in the med-surg floor upstairs from me. yesterday, she was so upset i thought uh-oh, menopause alert! but actually, she told me she was upset i was a tech, "you're a nurse working as a tech. why did you through all those days not sleeping, studying, working - life stinks" and i agree with my mom. only some days. then there's days where i appreciate being able to pick my own hours as prn. then i remember how i got stuck with a 2 grand er bill b/c i have no benefits (on top of student loans). or the days i can observe the nurses how they handle everyday life in the er. ... i got way off track. my original post wanted to ask anyone with any wisdom to share with me - what to do in the meantime. seems like it may be a year or more before i get a job. i already feel like i'm losing skills. i know i should be really applying and re-applying and following up for jobs, but honestly, i'm tired of it and whenever the jobs come they'll come. not to say i'm not bursting inside at how frustrated i am. what to do in the meantime???? (*thanks )

New grad RN wanting to relocate to Houston
Hi- I am from NC and as all the new grad RN's in this area, cannot find a job. I am looking into Houston since my fiancee has a condo over there I can use but I know absolutely nothing about Texas. Can anyone of you experienced Nurses tell me which hospitals are "good" for new grads? Maybe the ones hiring, buta also which hospitals to steer away from? Thanks!
