Sleeves in the OR
I agree with you, this practice is a bit strange, as you said, you touch the patient and its bed with your sleeves and than go to the next patient, I am wondering how AORN decided that this standard would be good for the patient. In a hospital where I worked at some stage in the past, there was an issue with a female doctor, belonging to a certain religion who did not permit her to use short sleeves around males. She had to go and scrub in early, before the other doctors or nurses were there so she couldn't be seen with short sleeves. We had a little bit of trouble with her because she wanted to keep her long sleeves on during washing. And now the standards changed?

On call... 24 hours??
Calls work this way: 8 hours normal shift and once a week on call (it comes once a week for every nurse and one weekend in 4 or 5 weekends) from the end of the shift till next morning. If you are called out for an intervention, and you haven't completed 9 hours of break between your shift and call out, than you are entitled to a 9 hours break following your call out. So, if your shift ended at 18:00m and you have been called out at 1:00 in the morning, do the operation and go home 4:00 in the morning, than you are entitled to have break till 13:00 and than go to work. If there are only two hours left from your working shift, the manager might decide that you may take the whole day off. It depends how the surgical lists are going. Hope this is helpfull. I have done this for few years. The most exciting call out was when, we have been called out for a C-section, we got to the hospital and the patient delivered on the way to OT. So, we went home, had our 9 hours break afterwards and got paid for the call out (they pay you at least 3 hours even if you work 1 hour).

Nursing shortage??
It depends what country you are coming from. If you need english exam, it is a bit more difficult.

Where have you found missing countable items?
I saw a surgeon hiding a swab under his boot intentionally. I could not believe it, but I have been told that he's done it before.

What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?
It happened to me once. I was working in ICU and one of the patients was dying. At some stage during night time, I could hear a noise like horses and bells. I looked at the cleaner and she said: "This is Mrs C who is coming to pick up the dead. She is the lady who built up this hospital. And every time when a patient dies, she comes to take him/her away." I didn't trust her words, but after a little while, our patient who was in a coma has died. This happened about 16 years ago, but I never forgot it.
