Congrats letsgomets! I'm in too. Nice the wait isa finally over. Did the envelope contain any info about wellstar. I had a neighbor open my letter because I am in nj. I didn't want her to have to go all through the paperwork looking for wellstar info. Hope everyone gets good news today!

Georgia Highlands College Fall 2010
Is anyone taking clinical calc this summer?

Acceptance letters for nursing programs, fall 2010
I signed up for clinical calc and emailed the nursing dept asking about acceptance letters. I basically asked (in a nice way) if we would hear something by June 10th - which is the date of orientation for the clinical cal dvd class. I mentioned that I probably wouldn't go ahead with the class (until next semester) if I wasn't accepted for fall. I was told that "we should hear something by then". I know that doesn't help much, but I am guessing we get our letters the first week of June....hopefully!!

Georgia Highlands College Fall 2010
mgeiger - last fall, some of the applicants found out a range of accepted scores (from the previous fall) and a "ball-park" idea of number of applicants and number accepted to each campus. I can't remember what the numbers were, but I assumed they got the info from the nursing office secretary. You can try Ms. C - if she is not busy, she is VERY helpful. The nursing dept may not give you the exact numbers for this fall, but may give you an idea of the trend ('09) for applicants. Good luck! P.S. I can tell you that a friend got the Marietta campus and the scholarship, and had a 1239 on the worksheet.

Having trouble fitting in
brownbook - it's funny you say that 52 sounds young to you. I remember when I was starting this journey and was 47 and felt ancient. What I wouldn't do to be 47 again :)

Having trouble fitting in
Thanks for the original question and positive response. I am 52 and beginning nursing school in the fall. I have already met some of my fellow students and they not only are the age of my 3 children, but 2 went to high school with my daughter!! I have been worried about the age difference for quite some time. I actually turned down 2 previous nursing school acceptances because of my age. It's not that I feel I won't be able to handle school. It's more about the fear of not being hired after graduation because I have a "limited time" to practice because of my age. Hopefully I don't chicken out this time, because hospice nursing is something I would love to do!!

Georgia Highlands College Fall 2010
letsgomets31 - glad to hear there's another person traveling from kennesaw. i am also hoping for the marietta campus, but will definitely drive to rome if necessary. the drive to rome from kennesaw isn't too bad - no real traffic. it just would be easier to drive to windy hill. according to the allnurse thread for ghc 2009, there were students accepted with a score of 1050. but i think it probably changes from year to year depending on the group of students. i'm sure the nursing dept could give an idea of the range of acceptable scores from last fall. good luck to you!!

Georgia Highlands College Fall 2010
good luck to you nataliearice. hope we all get the marietta campus!! you're going to have some drive from cumming - but with only going 3 days a weeks, it's doable. i only live about 20 minutes away, but with traffic it makes it more like an hour. but i guess it's all worth it!!

Acceptance letters for nursing programs, fall 2010
wrobeir, you're right about the"scholarship" being more like tuition reimbursement. If you are selected by WellStar, you pay for the first semester out of your own pocket. (because their is a high failure/dropout rate during first semester) If you make it to second semester, you receive 1st and 2nd semester tuition money. Then for 3rd and 4th semester, you receive the money just prior to the semester beginning. You are obligated to 3 years employment with WellStar. If you choose not to work for WellStar after graduation, you pay back the tuition, interest AND a penalty!! I don't know what they do as far as the "scholarship" if WellStar choose's not to hire you???? I'm sure WellStar will do their best to try and find a position for everyone that received their money.

rojahs - I didn't mean to imply that we in Cobb county would be sent to Rome (against our wishes) and the Rome students allowed to come to Marietta. I meant that if you put Marietta on your application as your campus of choice, you received that location. I just didn't know if you had to apply for the scholarship at the Marietta location. I know last year that if you lived close to the Marietta campus, you DID get special consideration. Obviously, those of us wishing to receive the scholarship are hoping to work at a WellStar facility, so that wouldn't make sense for Rome students. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't know the particular circumstances of the student that didn't receive the scholarship. I don't know if they made special allowances and permitted her to stay, or if it the practice and there were other students at Marietta without the scholarship. As long as you want to work for WellStar, the scholarship is a good deal. It was very competitive last year.

I believe that if you put the Marietta location for campus, you are offered a CHANCE to apply for the scholarship. I do not believe it is mandatory. There are a lot of students who are just interested in the location as opposed to driving to Rome. All the students that I knew (from allnurses) applied for the scholarship. I did not know anyone who was offered the scholarship and turned it down. Although I did know one person that was accepted at Marietta, but was not offered the scholarship. So it probably is possible to be at the Marietta campus and not have the scholarship. I don't know if I helped you with my answer, but feel free to ask anything.

The WellStar scholarship is pretty much as wrobeir said. I applied for the scholarship last year, was accepted, but then had some out of state family problems that prevented me from starting nursing school in the fall. Therefore, I am applying again. You basically fill out the application, write a "personal statement", get 2 recommendations (they like one from an instructor/professor), have an interview, and take a "personality type" test. The woman you will work with from WellStar is amazing and extremely helpful!! Last year, there were about 10 extra applicants for the Marietta campus. I too am from Kennesaw and hope to get Marietta for the location - although 75S in the morning can be a nightmare!!

I might email or call the office after the April deadline and find out when we should hear something. I'll let you know if I do. Are you applying for the Marietta or Rome campus? I am hoping for Marietta, but will take either!!
