When reading your fetal monitor strips, how much of the strip do you take into account? For example, if you are charting for 1400, how much of the strip do you chart on? Five minutes before and after 1400, 15 mintues before 1400, etc. Just lookin...
  5. EFM Question

We do have certain criteria fro reassuring Vs. Not. i am wondering if you are charting a fetal heart every 15 minutes on our flow sheet, and you are now at 1400, how much of the strip do you look at to document for that time slot. Example, do you g...

At my hospital, we put two bands on the baby and one on mom, all have matching four diget number s that are read each time the baby is taken out to mom. We also foot print the baby and moms index finger.
  7. I am a diploma nurse and find that Often I have better clinical skills than many BSN nurses. They are brought up in the classroom while us diploma nurses learn in a clincial setting. I think we have better hands on skills and know more about really...
  8. Would I be considered a "difficult patient?"

What would happen if you came into the hospital to deliver, we went along with you birth plan, but during your labor the baby was having late decels, not noticed, because of the fact we aren't permitted to provide continuous monitoring, and then you ...
  9. Would I be considered a "difficult patient?"

Sorry, but honestly I am not sure why you would refuse such important interventions. Intermittent fetal heart check with a doppler is fine, but it is impossible to detect late decels by this method, which are a sign that the placenta is not providing...
  10. Stethoscopes....

WHen I am working on the post partum end I carry my own, but in the L&D I use what they hospital has in there. We too do vitals on the automatic machine and never use a manual cuff in the labor room.
  11. What # of questions did u pass the NCLEX with?

I passed my exam with 75 questions, my one friend passed with 109 and the other two had 265. I wasn't sure if I had passed when I was done either. I think everyone I know that has taken it thought for sure they failed. Good Luck.
  12. Welcome to the real world!

As a student nurse I never ealized how much paper work there really was and just all that being a nurse in a speccialty area involved. I started in the OB department of the same hospital I trained at. I am so happy to be there and love my job. It ...
  13. I am a new nurse who went right into OB. I am so glad I did it that way. I don't think you need prior experience if you have a good preceptor andorientation set up.
  14. What's your protocol immeadiately after birth?

In the unit in which I worked as soon as baby comes, she is put up on moms chest before the cord is cut. Dad or the coach can cut the cord, the nurse dries baby off while on moms chest. If baby is not well it is immediately taken to the warmer and ...
  15. L&d unit interview questions?

Make sure you make the point that you realize this a a very high risk area and yyou understand how important it is to pay close attention to your patient and that you aren't afraid to ask for help if you need it. Also point out that you are new and ...
  16. # allowed in delivery

We allow two support people in the room with Mom. The same two people are to stay, it isn't a switch on and off thing. It doesn't work though. The visitors do not comply and usually the initial nurse caring for the patient does not enforce, which...
  17. ER nursing as new grad

I have to agree with Tinyhands4him. If that is what you want to do, then go for it. As a new grad you are not going to know everything anywhere you work. If you are determined and the department along with a good preceptor are behind you then you ...
  18. Tests during Orientation???

Yes, I had to take a pharmacology and a drug calculation test. Some of the other new grads I started with had to do one in moderate sedation as well, if they were heading to ICU or stepdown.
  19. How long did the NCLEX take you?

About 50 mintues for 75 questions
  20. What advice would you give...?

I agree tht you should worry about finishing up school first. In my last year, I tried to study for that, find a job and keep up with my usual work, I got so stressed out. One of my instructors told me first you have to worry about graduating, then...
  21. So bummed out

DOn't get frustrated or discouraged. I would be careful about getting a job in the hospital. ALthough it is great experience, you will start picking up the "real world" way of doing things instead of the "book way" which is what the NCLEX is lookin...
  22. IV starts

We learned to start IV's in our last rotation. I was able to attempt two starts on the floor. I was lucky, most of my classmates did not ever get to try. When I started my job, I followed our IV therapy nurse for the day. She took me to the med s...
