  1. Telly, Me too! I'm afraid of the swimming part. I know it must seem weird that I'm afraid of the swimming part when I live in an area where I am surrounded by water. I'm not a very strong swimmer and I get freaked out when I can't hold my breath long enough. The prone floatation freaks me out too. That just doesn't seem normal to me. When I first saw that, I went over in my head all the body positions (supine, lateral, prone, etc.) that I learned in nursing school and I was like "that can't be right!" Then I saw on the website that there are actually people floating prone in the water. WTH!! Kelsy, I'm afraid of how cold it might be, too! I think it will be a huge adjustment for me as far as the area and weather. I'm sure I'll be fine though. Question for you...if you didn't do NCP, what program did you do?
  2. Nice to meet you, too. I'm in school in Hawaii. I guess we fall into the same region. They say that Vegas is the "9th island" for us Hawaiians. We like us some Vegas, man!! I'm like you. I want that s*&t on paper. It's not real unless it's on paper. I think I'll give him a call this week. My husband actually talked to him last week in order to get LCDR Palmer's contact information for my husband's detailer. And LCDR mentioned Seattle, but like I said, nothing's real unless it's on paper. What have you heard about ODS?
  3. How funny! I'm replying in class too. Senioritis at its best!! lol My detailer is LCDR Palmer too. Was he very helpful or was he kind of irritated? Where are you going to nursing school? What's your name, btw? Mine is Moani.
  4. I actually graduate on December 19 and I want to take at least 3 weeks to study for the NCLEX. I just can't wait to graduate already!!! I have a serious case of senioritis. I already sent my duty preference sheet. My first pick is Portsmouth, then San Diego, then Bremerton (Seattle). My husband is in the Coast Guard so we had to pick places where we could possibly get co-located together. Did you call the detailer or did he contact you? Do we all have the same detailer?
  5. congratulations on getting your first pick! I may be in your ODS class. I graduate in December too. I haven't talked to the detailer yet. I've been a little hesitant to call, but after reading your post, I might call him. When do you plan to take the NCLEX?
  6. lcdr dan, question for you. you mentioned that new navy nurses get depolyed during their first duty station. my questions are where are they deployed to and for how long? also, when you say "deployed" what does that truly mean because when i hear that word the only thing i think is iraq or afghanistan! mahalo, md
  7. LCDR Dan, I am VERY new to this site...just joined not 15 minutes ago! But I have been reading different threads all morning since 0630 this morning (it's now 0915), and I've noticed you are a popular person on most of these threads. You seem like a fountain of knowledge so I have a few questions for you if you don't mind. I'll give you some background on myself first >>>>I'm in going into my 4th semester of nursing school this Fall and will graduate in Dec 09. I am married and my husband is an O3 in the USCG. He and I have been throwing around the idea of Navy nursing after my graduation. We decided together that Navy would be the best as far as the military being able to co-locate us (although I know they have NO obligation to do so). And the CG doesn't have any nursing jobs. That's pretty much my background so here's my questions: 1) What do you know about the military co-locating members from different services? According to my hubby, the Navy is pretty much near everywhere the CG is. We thought this might be easier as far as getting duty stations near each other. 2) I have lived in Hawaii my whole entire 28 years of life. I've visited the mainland several times but other than that my permanent address has been in HI. I know that I can handle living on the mainland, but what are deployments like? Where have you and your wife deployed to, and are your work responsibilities the same as at home? 3) What is OIS like? I noticed that you called it a "knife and fork" something or other. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what does that mean? 4) I've seen different programs out there. One is the NCP program, and the other I think is the Accession program. Do you know which one might suit my situation better? I think that's all the questions I have for now. I appreciate your reply. Aloha, MD
