Excellent advice Emergency RN, I could not agree more. We are not here to be abused and limits must be set and maintained. As you say we are human beings first and this sole fact gets lost in the process. The caliber of the medical director is not only obvious but all too frequent in our line of work, all the more reason for solidarity within the profession. Remember there are no mistakes just learning opportunities. Never let a crisis go to waste...each time something along these lines has happened to me over the years it has always inspired me to go back to school. Something to think about at least. You are not alone.

Great, so glad it worked. I compiled these cards over a series of months, a little at a time. They helped a bit. I love index cards to study. Now that I have passed my CEN its off to apply for DNP programs. Wish me luck!

Fellow RNs, If you are studying for the CEN exam I have a gift for you. I created a set of flashcards on the site called: flashcardmachine.com Just search for CEN under topics. There are over 400 cards you can review online to help you study for the exam, I have just made them public as of today. You have to register I think, but its free, the whole deal is free to you. Well, I can say the the review books I used helped me and I would recommend them. I found them clear, concise, and to the point covering the topics required.

I bought one of her review books and I felt it helped me pass the CEN the other day. I used the lippincott as well and the MedEd CD review. Something about this combo has to be right...I passed.

Great! I found once I set the date (3 months down the road) it really motivated me to study, don't forget to join the ENA first. It will not only lower your cost of the exam but also affiliate you with a professional organization.

Lippincott is great as well as Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio. Dont buy more than 2 books and review courses are not needed. You are your review course. STUDY. Just use those 2 books. Study about 30-45 min x 5d q wk for 2m and you'll be fine. Everytime you learn something new, write it on an index card and review those. The test is very clinically based, meaning not rich on nursing theory. If you've worked in an ER 1+ years and study as I stated above, you'll be fine. As I stated earlier, don't predict this exam to be a monster like I did, repeat after me: its very manageable, Its very passable, its not so bad. You passed your NCLEX this is just a test like that one.

Well I did it. Passed the CEN this morning. I must say to all those considering taking it..take it. You can pass it. Yes, I studied, yes they ask you ACLS, PALS stuff and yes you can pass. To tell you the truth, the test was about half as hard as what I anticipated it to be. If you have worked in an ER for a year, buy one or two of the famous review books, study for a couple of months regularly you will pass. Some of the questions were so simple I had to reread the question to make sure that I was understanding it correctly (leg wound bleeding...what is first RN intervention...direct pressure..this is Nursing 101 stuff) There were complicated questions don't get me wrong, some I really had to work through but overall a very manageable exam. I finished in 80 of the 180 minutes and passed by a wide margin. I don't say these things to blow my own horn only to emphasize to those who maybe considering taking the exam, don' fear it, it's very doable. Besides, your ER nurses, your job is to save lives daily. You are the very finest of the nursing specialities, the best. How bad can one exam be compared to that? Good luck to all who intend to take it and I hope I have convinced a few that the big bad CEN isn't so bad afterall. Now start studying and go pass. Warmest Regards, Don

Joy, I have been studying for a couple of weeks, about 10h a week. I am entering my final semester for Adult NP & expect to take both cert. exams in late winter. I purchased the ENA Core Curriculum, it is a fine book but lacks real depth. Additionally, I have the audio CDs from MedEd, they are excellent, I listen to them in the car as well as home . I recommend them. Laura Gasparis' CEN review book is a book of exam type questions that I am also finding beneficial. Lastly, I make flashcards at flashcardmachine.com It is free and I will share them if you like. If you make some we can share. Its really easy & free. The more I study the more confident I feel. I am an RN for 10y with ER,PICU & ambulatory care experience. Let me know how your studying is going. Its nice to know Im not alone in this endevour. Best of luck.
