Bipolar does not mean "druggie"
Well said!!! I know of one nurse who is BiPolar and b/c she took more than 3 meds she was unable to obtain short term OR long term disability insurance thru our employer at the time. She was denied since they figured she "might" have a claim later on. WTH? Very few of her co-workers knew her pysch history, she was not a drug seeker, she was an excellent nurse/employee and just b/c she sought help for her symptoms/condition she was denied benefits? She went off all her meds, re-applied during open enrollment, got approved, then went back on meds. She was not "herself" while off the meds but she did what she felt she had to do. She never did need to use the benefit while working there. IndianaLPN

Job Hunt: Job Titles and Duties Not In Description
No, I have not been un-employed. I was able to transfer within the company to a different location so I kept my seniority, benefits, etc but got a pay raise since cost of living is higher here. I was surprised that even though both facilites are owned by the same company (a very large corporation), they do not do things the same way facility to facility. Most of the paperwork is different, the actual duties are different and it is just not as "streamlined" as I assumed it would be. The computer documentation is the same but I have discovered I have much more training and knowledge about the computer than most of the nurses who have worked here longer than I have.I have never done a transfer before so really didn't know what to expect. I have 17 years experience working full time but even I know you cannot walk in the door most places and land a prime day shift job. I've worked days, evenings, 12 hour days and 12 hour nights over the course of my career. I've done peds, ICU, and Med-Surg in the hospital, coordianted healthcare for adult MR/DD clients (day shift office job), worked LTC and done private duty. Personally I prefer evenings but it just isn't working with the family right now. My spouse used to be home by 4pm to get supper on the table, make sure homework/chores were done and so on. Now he is working 12 hour shifts, 6-7 days a week. Days one week then nights for a week then back to days. We knew this before he accepted the job and we moved but I just did not count on the issues with the kids/chores/homework. They are teenagers and should be able to behave and get it done but they aren't and their grades are suffering BADLY. My only choice is to find a day position somewhere even if I don't particularly want to (won't leave kids alone at night every other week and might shift messes up my mental health). IndianaLPN

Job Hunt: Job Titles and Duties Not In Description
I'm looking for a new job. I have been on the indeed.com website and there are several I might be interested in but since I am new to the area (moved in August), I don't know what I'm looking at. Occupational Med Clinic: there is no job description/duties so how do I know what type of place it is and/or if I would even want to apply? Why waste my time and theirs if this is something I do not want to do? It is full time M-F either 7-4 or 8-5 so I am assuming it's a clinic/office of some sort. Any ideas? Should I apply and then just say "not interested" if it isn't what I want to do? Will that "void" my application for other positions from same hospital? They have multiple listings, a few I might do, others I know I will not even consider. IndianaLPN

Petrie Cast for 4 yr old
A friend of mine contacted me about her grandson who just turned 4. He is having surgery the end of the month at Shriners Hospial in St. Louis due to a hip problem and will be in a petrie cast. I thought it was the same as a spica cast but I'm not sure as I have never worked pediatric ortho (or any ortho for last 14 yrs). I am thinking a spica cast covers to the waist but the petrie cast only goes to the thighs? Since I sew, she asked me about altering/making him some pants with velcro or snaps on the inner and outer seams and doing the crotch of some boxer shorts the same way. I need to get them done by the 20th since they are coming here (2 hours away) that day for a belated birthday party for him. He wears a size five but if the cast covers the waist, wouldn't I need to make them much larger to account for cast room (width)? If it only goes to the thighs then only the legs need to be larger so size five but with really flared legs? Since we live so far apart and I work full time, I only want to do it once and not have to re-do them later b/c they were too small. I don't imagine he'll be up/about much so if too large, might be ok. OTOH, if he's able to get up and move around, I don't want them falling off. Can anyone offer me any advice? Thanks, IndianaLPN

Evansville area FT LPN jobs?
Thought I had a position lined up with my current employer at a different location since we are relocating to the Evansville area. Turns out the paperwork wasn't completed timely and the postion has possibly already been filled. My last day was yesterday at the "old" location. Where to start? I checked online job searches but didn't find much there for FT days or evenings. I would rather work 3-11 than 7-3 but would take combo position. I don't do nights (per dr. recommendation, BTDT, too many problems). I need medical and dental benefits for family that won't kill the budget. I can't afford not to work esp with the moving expenses. I prefer hands-on nursing care as I had an office type job that I didn't like. IndianaLPN

Opinion on Golden Living Center
I've worked for GLC since Nov. of last year. The company benefits are better than anyone else's around here and overall, I believe it to be a good company. OTOH, each facility of course has it's own admin staff and you take your chances no matter where you go. I would also suggest checking the most recent survey results to see what deficiencies were noted. I checked nursing home report cards to "see" what kind of places were within driving distance before I applied. The score was below 50 (closer to zero the better) while the state avg. was about 200, max on the scale is almost 900. I thought it was good place to work and I've been "ok" with the company itself, I just wish the admin staff would listen/act on issues that myself and other employees report. We do have a new ED so things are changing but very slowly. IndianaLPN
