In the four months I've been an RN, I've learned a very important lesson; watch out for you and yours. The hospital is in this game for the money, make no mistake. If they could get away with paying you less and making you do more, they would. Patient care is last on managements "to do" list. We are constantly short staffed and none of the scheduling makes a lick of sense. I work for my wife and son, not the hospital. What is best for my family is what I do, not what is best for the floor or the hospital. Learn that lesson and learn it early.

I'm not sure why people are under the impression night shift is easier than day shift. If anything, it is harder since they majority of the docs and ancillary staff aren't there. I do it for the extra pay since I only make $19.03 an hour base pay.

I graduated in May of 08 and started working in June of 08 on an Advanced Care Unit. I work straight night shift and try to work 52-60 hours per week. I prefer night shift as the docs aren't there. If they try and stick me back on day shift I'll find another job. :)

Exactly right and that isn't wrong. I did say I would find someone who could or would. If I am uneducated about something, I will not wing it and hope for the best. I am a Roman Catholic and educated about Catholicism, not Islam, Judisim, ect.

I can't argue with the Holy Father. I think you have the wrong idea of what I am talking about though. I don't read scripture between assessments, I don't introduce myself as a Crusader with chalice and patent in hand, nor do I have Roman Catholic on my name tag (a celtic cross instead). I have never held a patient hostage or preyed on weak patients. I stated several times, "if they asked."

No, no, and no. :) “Christ is the author of our profession.” -Florence Nightingale Christianity has been with this profession since the beginning. Christians are called to spread the good news of Christ in all things we do. Our faith doesn't stop at the hospital door. I can't remember if you are Catholic or not. If you are, pay attention at the end of mass next time. Usually the deacon or priest closes with "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord." He doesn't mean love and serve the Lord until you exit the church, or until your next shift begins, or until it is convenient for you. Stand up for that guy who hung on a cross 2,000 years ago for you.

Remember that Jesus said, "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels" (Mark 8:38)" Words are always necessary. :)

I can't meet the spiritual needs of someone of a different religion and I certainly wouldn't "fake it".

Don't assume Babs, it makes an......you know. I would care for an HIV patient or a woman with 100 abortions the same way I care for every other patient; in the image of Christ the healer. I would have happily prayed with the child. If the child wanted the prayer to Mohommad read, no, I wouldn't have. I wouldn't make a scene or reprimand the child, but I would have another nurse do it. I think conviction is the word here.

Your a card carrying member of the NRA, that we do have in common. Start a thread on firearms in nursing, something we can agree on.

I wouldn't treat you any differently than a Roman Catholic priest, other than reading your religious texts. I don't see how you could possibly be offended.

I can't leave my faith outside anything. It is who I am. I haven't met many non Christian nurses, and please don't think I look down on non-denominational Christianity. The Roman Catholic Church works hard at Christian unity.

Yes, Jesus was Jewish, but Jesus said that He alone is the way to salvation. He didn't leave any wiggle room their. You either believe in Him and accept Him or you don't. Before Christ left this earth He gave the keys of heaven to Saint Peter and built a new Church, one that would lead His people to salvation. That isn't Jewish. I don't demean other human beings for having beliefs other than my own. If asked, I simply tell them that I am a Roman Catholic, I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ. I would be happy to tell them about this man who changed my life, but if they want the Torah or Koran read, I will find someone else to do it. Nobody has asked for the last two after hearing about this man named Jesus.

I'm sorry Babs, but I won't compromise my faith in order to please someone else. I serve one God, and He is a very jealous God. I would never be disrespectful to a patient, but I would not perform nor read a book from anything other than Christianity. The Man who hung on a cross over 2,000 years ago expects no less.

And I love you both. :) I haven't had one complaint thus far. I believe their is a misconception in Christianity that Christ is your way to salvation, but someone else might find a different path. It doesn't work that way and I would be doing a great disservice to the faith to believe any differently. I don't expect you to understand now, but I pray God may open your heart and your mind to see the truth.

I am a Roman Catholic first, a Husband and Father second, and a Registered Nurse third. My faith is at the center of my life. I believe Jesus Christ is who He said He is. Therefore I believe He is the one and only path to salvation. Regardless of my patients belief, I am a Roman Catholic. I will pray over that patient or pray with that patient, but only in the name of Jesus Christ. If my patient has a problem with that they can find another nurse. It deeply saddens me to discover nurses with such cold hearts, who are so far away from Almighty God. In order to be a good nurse, one must acknowledge the first who healed and then attempt to follow in His foot steps.

Many Registered Nurses do not understand what they can and can't do. I believe this is why our profession is taking so long to come full circle. We are licensed, just as a doctor. We have a different scope of practice though. If you want to hang your own shingle, more power to you. :)
