  1. Garland is large so it really depends on which part he will be working in. If north Garland, then Sachse, Wylie, Richardson and Murphy would be good areas to look at. The housing market is really good for buyers right now. If interested in a good deal, I would even suggest looking at the foreclosures at hud.gov. Would not suggest living around the south garland/mesquite/dallas area. If you choose to live in Lewisville, Carrollton, Frisco, it would be an easy drive to north Garland on the 190 President George Bush Turnpike.
  2. I am a nurse working downtown, my husband is a police officer and we have two children. I would suggest picking where you live based upon the school district. I would avoid Dallas, Garland, Mesquite, Irving, Grand Prairie, Rowlett and any area South of Dallas unless you are willing to pay for private schooling. I would suggest...Plano, Wylie, Lewisville and Allen. You would have to commute unless you took a job in one of the hospitals closer to you. I, however, could never dream of working somewhere else. If you will be working shift work, the traffic is easier during those odd hours. Most hospitals now offer assistance, if not free, rail passes.
  3. The American Burn Association has a list of all the Verified Burn Centers. Not all Burn Centers are verified, but this is a good place to start. Good Luck. http://ameriburn.org/verification_verifiedcenters.php
  4. Our BICU staffs one nurse to two patients. If the patient is pediatric, the staffing ration is 1:1.
  5. The American Burn Association has a course called Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS). The course clearly states trauma injuries are treated first and burns second.
  6. Keep in mind that the Parkland Burn Formula is a guideline for resuscitation of the burn injured patient. Patients with additional injuries, for example: trauma and inhalation, may require additional fluid resuscitation above the 4cc/kg/% TBSA. Initial resuscitation is vital. Adequate resuscitation maintains perfusion of the organs and tissue perfusion. Adequate perfusion could mean the difference between a 35% TBSA and a 40% TBSA. Injury continues to occur if not adequately resuscitated in the initial 8 hours post burn injury. If you would like to read more on this, I suggest looking up the "Zone of Stasis". Good luck.
