Transfer AL license to GA
You guys! I'm so frustrated. I am trying to get my GA license by endorsement and have been calling (I mean probably tried 100x the last 3 days). And it was busy every time except one. That one time I was on hold for ONE HOUR and hung up. I mean really? I will post my questions on here in case anyone might be able to help, but if there is an email or secret phone # or something it would be greatly appreciated! 1. I used AL's online app for license verification, which I plan to include in the packet sealed. Is that okay or do I have to send them the exact form that is in the packet? 2. My RN program was a BSN, but I have also gotten an MSN since then. Do I need to send both transcripts? What about if I took a few summer classes from a community college that are listed on my BSN transcript, do I need to request that a well? 3. It will have been 4yrs since graduation on May 8th. As long as my application is signed prior to that, do I need to worry about the work hours verification? 4. I am trying to register on the GAPS website and its asking for "verification code". Where do I get that from? 5. Do I have to travel to GA to get fingerprinted?

CNM post MSN-FNP
I'm just finishing up my MSN-FNP program. I've become particularly interested in women's health, OB, alternative medicine, fertility, etc. lately and have begun looking at CNM programs. My concern is that all of my experience as an RN is in critical care and procedure areas (cath lab/IR). Also, I currently live in AL where CNMs can do virtually nothing (I thought they did not even exist here until today). This makes the distance programs impossible for me as I don't think there would be anyone I could work with here. I'm considering moving out of state now to attend a school that would have my clinicals set up for me. In the meantime, do you think it would be more advantageous to begin working as an FNP or to try to get an L&D job as an RN?? The job market here is tight... I need to move! Haha. Any suggestions appreciated. :)

Standard practice for arterial line pulls
We have a 6wk orientation, I think I watched one, pulled the 2nd. Prob did about 20 on orientation, however we are not allowed to pull without another RN in the room until we hit 6months... however many that may be.

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
I submitted my stuff to certified background last tuesday and I got an email today that my MMR was not approved because it does not have the address on it. I just uploaded the individual page (p1) so I guess I just need to upload all three pages to each requirement? Is that what you did? I haven't been approved/disapproved on any of the others yet. I was able to make a blazerid, but I have like four holds so that I can't register. Just waiting on everything to go through! Patience...

Okay so Tuesday I: faxed acceptance letter, POS, FERPA and license and CPR. I also did my background check and drug screen. Thursday I upload all of my medical stuff. I've got my blazernet ID, theres holds though so I can't register. So I guess I'm just waiting for my advisor to contact me. I feel like I'm missing something.

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
There's public notaries at any bank and lots of secretaries at offices and such. Technically a notary is not allowed to validate a document and they almost refused to help me. They can only validate a signature. I went and copied my BLS, drivers license, and RN license front and back and wrote on there that it was in fact mine and signed it and she signed it with me. See rmicu's post for the corrected number to fax to. (A notarized signature means nothing legally if its faxed) But whatever will satisfy them.

resilient nurse- I'm not sure, it let me submit as many as I wanted. I originally just had three, then I ran into an old clinical instructor that asked if she could write one.... figured it could only help. rmicu- If you hear back from the lady about how to submit that, let me know. :) Thanks.

Congrats to you as well! I tried to fax it and it wouldn't go through. I thought maybe it was a phone number... but that didn't work either. I guess I'll just put it in the mail in the AM? What about you?

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
Here's my stats: I am an Alabama nurse. I have a 3.7 GPA overall, with only about a 3.0 on my last 60 hours. Where I went to nursing school you had to have a 4.0 to get in pretty much and pretty much no one got A's once they were in the Bachelors program. I graduated with honors in May 2010 and have been working as an RN since then. I had 4 recs: an old preceptor from an internship, two instructors from my Bachelor's program and my unit manager from my current job. I also volunteer at a local free clinic. I got into the FNP part time for Fall 2011, to graduate Spring 2013. Today I knocked out most of that admission to do list. I've been gone since 830 this am and just got home. Whew.

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
I know some people at work that started in Fall 2010 "part time" FNP and some graduate in Fall '12 and some graduate in Spring '12. So it seems to me like they just place people at different lengths based on the resources they anticipate.

YAY! Finally got my letter! FNP! Part time, but mine has me graduating Fall 2013. Mine has two classes listed for the Fall- Patho and Role Development.

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
I'm not sure if this is true, but I had heard that they weren't accepting anyone full-time for any masters program for the fall. I wish I could remember who told me that.

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
Based on people that I work with that were accepted the last two summers, they all found out the second week in July. But yes, it is ridiculously late. They all mentioned that they were satisfied with the program during the fall/spring but in the summer the instructors were impossible to reach in the summer and nothing gets done. If they're going to teach classes in the summer they need to get on the ball and unless they would have notified us back in May they should have come back from vacation by now and sent out our letters.

I just called UAB again... They told me that the letters would be sent out "by next week" and that was all the information she could give me. I wish I would have applied to USA.

I have that same teacher I'm pretty sure right now for another class nondegree... I've heard she is really good in the fall/spring, but lazy in the summer. Plenty of papers, midterm, etc., still no grades yet and no response.

Anyone applying to UAB MSN program?
Congratulations to you! I'm sure you're ecstatic.

Cardiac Stepdown unit 5:1 patient ratio...is this normal???
I work on a unit like this w/a very very high turnover rate (many outpt caths). We take 3:1 by ourselves, 4:1 with a PCA, 5:1 with an LPN or 6:1 with both an LPN and a PCA. The LPN or PCA usually has 10+ patients. Sometimes its so slow and sometimes its so fast paced with high acuity. And sometimes MDs forget we are not an ICU!
-
staffing
Our staffing is anywhere from 2:1 to 1:3 depending on acuity. If you have three patients, none are intubated. We don't get open hearts... we have a separate unit for those. 2:1 or 1:1 is almost always induced hypothermia patients post cardiac arrest. Our balloon pumps are usually 1:2 or 1:3 depending on acuity. We get balloon pumps that are pretty stable sometimes. The main thing that we complain about is needing a float nurse or a PCA or LPN or someone to help with turning and baths. It gets annoying when you are ready to turn for an hour but can't find anyone to help. I think acuity on cardiac ICU's varies a lot more than other ICUs. We keep some types of patients through d/c.

Held Coreg w/ BP of 100/55
I work on a Cardiac ICU. I would have given the Coreg. Holding a beta blocker for BP of 100/55 would not have been very popular with the cardiologist, and if I called him he probably would have asked me why in the world I called him. However if you are on the floor and your pt is not cardiac, this probably completely changes things. Also, Coreg 6.25 is a pretty small dose. The key with beta blockers is maximizing oxygenation to the heart muscles and allowing it to rest.
