Question: My patient had an a-line and a picc on his right arm. I came on shift this morning to find a bp cuff on the same arm as the picc and a-line checking the bp pressure every 120 minutes. So, I switched the cuff to the left arm and just made a mental note. The same nurse was back and said she heard when you check if the cuff pressure and the a-line pressure correlate, you put the cuff on the same side arm. Also, it's okay to take pressures on a picc as long as you don't do it that often. Now, I had never heard this and if I'm wrong I will admit it, but I just find it hard to believe you can put a cuff on a picc. Does anyone know what the correct way is?

What is it about competition and male nurses?
LOL! these are all great ideas. I may have to switch to nights. I have often wondered how nights passes the time.

CCU nursing fellowship
What hospital are you doing your fellowship through? I complete the 12 week program over the Summer through Swedish Medical Center. There were aspects that did need improvement, but overall I feel it was a great experience. If your going through the same program many of the problems I had are being fixed based of the Summer group, so the fellowship will most likely be even more helpful. So basically, my advice would be to apply for it. I am currently in my sixth week of orientation and except for weak areas, i.e charting and taking orders, I feel I am progressing rapidly. My critical thinking skills are definitely advanced compared to most new grads. Good luck and let me know what you decide to do. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me. Scott

Discrimination towards male students? Need advice.
Just hang in there. The way I see it is there are lots of people out there who have had it way worse. Just buck up and graduate. Maybe you need to reassess yourself...you may not be doing so hot if your instructors are that hard on you.

Music for stress relief
I don't know about others on this thread, but music is what gets me through those tough days at work. I have not seen any other threads in regards to this so I figured I would make one. I'm just curious to see if other nurses out there listen to music to relief stress, and what types of music? I think there are some generational differences on this site and I am very interested to hear what some older nurses listen to as well. Personally, I listen to primarily electronica, punk, some rap, and really most music that sounds good to me. :) I am a new grad so I am now getting used to the steady paycheck. The first few months of work I had no idea how to budget and ended up spending all my money. My plan now is to see at least one live band a month, and that will be the one day where I let loose. This way I have something to look forward to each month and I'm not going out each weekend. I just saw Thrice, Alkaline trio, and Rise Against. :) The song that got me through nursing school (useless by kruder and dorfmeister) check it out!

Male nurse on The ultimate fighter
Yes I'm definitely watching the fights tonight. Kempo may be hard on the knees...I guess it just kind of depends. You should not let that stop you from being active though. If it ends up being to much you could always just find a boxing school as well.

Male nurse on The ultimate fighter
I live in Denver, and I trained out of a small place next to where I went to school. Its both a kempo school and a japanese style they call shootfighting, which is basically just another name for mixed martial arts. I started originally with my focus being on kempo primarily to get in shape and for self defense, but then I fell in love with mma. Unfortunately, I have a stupidly stubborn attitude when it comes to tapping out so I injured my right elbow and I had to wear a sling through a portion of my med/surg II rotation.

Male nurse on The ultimate fighter
I trained and fought all through nursing school at the amateur level. I have been out for six months because I just went through a critical care fellowship, but I found a school next to where I work. I just need to find the motivation now. I must admit though at times its tough to be going to the hospital with a black eye...it never looks good. Plagued by small injuries I had to get my act together to get through school.

High Metabolism + No breaks= death, diet for skinny nurses?
My metabolism is the same way! The protein shake is a good idea, I would try some nuts and dried fruits you can buy in a bag at like target, eat sandwiches that always works for me, yogurt, I always drink a lot of milk that is stored in the fridge.

Hair style
I have been thinking about it too. It fits me perfectly because when I look in the mirror I can see that I have a little mohawk, but no one else can see it unless you really look. So I have what I need without upsetting anyone. However, I do want the sides just a little bit shorter now that its longer so I will see how that goes.

Fellowship is over
Hey everyone, It was awhile back now and I can't find the thread, but I'm the one who was in the critical care fellowship. For those who did not see what this was, it was a three month paid internship. With one day of didactic each week, a simulation day, and an actual day in a critical care unit. It just ended like week and besides a few kinks I feel it was very beneficial overall. The biggest problem encountered was not being able to really do hands on care. We were contracted outside the hospital we did rotations at, and as a result had no insurance at the hospital. Basically, I was able to do assessments and observe. Of course, this is still very beneficial, but I feel I have lost some of my more basic of skills. However, my critical thinking skills are at an entirely different level so once I get my skills back I will be fine. I start orientation October 6th and its go time from there. Scott

I just cut it into what I'm going to label the business hawk. Its really short and I plan on keeping it that way. It stops at the crown of my head. I have to work tomorrow so I will see what my unit manager says. I'm very happy with it though.

Ever feel overwhelmed trying to remember things?
I'm going to have to say...adderoll saved my life in regards to this. I was a total space cadet up until the last semester of nursing school now I'm kind of like super nurse in terms of being on top of stuff. I do have adhd and had not taken any medications for a long time.

Hair style
Man! This is awesome that this thread is still going on. :) My hair is just finally getting long enough to do the faux hawk, but so far I'm not liking it that much. I still have not checked my unit policies, but today I saw someone with a mohawk that was cute short but only went to the crown of the skull (I guess its a faux hawk then) I'm seriously considering doing this now because it would be clean cut. I go to the hospital again on Thursday so I'll find out then.

Working with all females - fringe benefit or danger zone?
I'm a recent new grad so I would definitely agree it is probably safer to avoid dating those at least on the same floor. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I don't think it would be a huge deal if they worked on some other floor in the hospital and or a different hospital. I also enjoy working with females because they don't have the alpha male thing going on. I hate that more than anything. Its nice to have a guy or two thrown in though...it helps having a little testosterone around. It would be cool to try and date a doc at some point. I'm not really to worried about it right now, but it would be fun to try. Scott
