Infant admission at bedside
Thanks for the feedback. I agree...we should just go for it! Can I ask are you a L&D or PP RN?

Infant admission at bedside
Has anyone successfully implemented infant admissions at the bedside? I'd be interested to know your process and staffing. This is a huge patient satisfier but we currently can only accomodate this during low census. Thank you in advance!

Scrubs in NICU
Thanks everyone. We currently wear hospital scrubs/lab coats/gowns, however, I think they're considering changing this as there is not a lot of evidence to prove its effectiveness with infection control. That's why I was asked to look for research articles on the topic. I didn't see any articles through the Academy of Neonatal nursing, but if anyone finds anything I would appreciate it!! Happy Nursing :)

Scrubs in NICU
Has anyone read any recent research articles on scrubs/cover coats and infection control in the NICU? The infection control nurse in our hospital asked me to look for one and I'm not having any luck! Thanks in advance

NICU Parent Discharge Education
CPR is only an option, but definitely a good place to start! I was thinking any and all necessary skills that proves parents understand how to take care of their infant without our help. There have been sad cicumstances that have brought our discharged infants back in bad shape

NICU Parent Discharge Education
Hi Everyone, Ok, so I've been in the NICU for a whole year now! YAY! My director wants me to start working on a parent education project for our unit. She would like me to develop a required class for parents to attend before their infant's discharge. I'm a little overwhelmed and am in desperate need for some experienced advise!! Does anyone work in a unit with a required education class for parents? If so, could you tell me how yours works? I would also appreciate any great topic ideas to include. If anyone can answer some of my questions or has any advise on this idea I'd appreciate it :wink2:. Thanks a bunch!

Is it true that a BSN will be mandatory soon?
How long has a BSN been mandatory? Just out of curiosity, what was the general reaction among RN's regarding this??

Poll: What do you love about the NICU?
I am a fairly new nurse. I've been working 18 months. My first job was on a Med-surg unit. I knew from the beginning of school I wanted to work in the NICU, however, there are not many openings in my area. I worked one year med-surg and basically learned how to be a REAL nurse. I think it's hard to make the transition from school to work! I was lucky enough that a NICU position opened up so quickly for me. I absolutely love my job!! It is a completely different environment than what I experienced on the floor. I would recommend this position to anyone who has the desire :) If you, however, do not get offered a position right after school, I would highly recommend taking the same route I did and get some great experience with multitasking and prioritizing while you wait for another opening!!

Time to Float!
After my orientation on med-surg, I was floated as soon as I was eligable!! I've been floated everywhere!! Kinda scary, in my opinion. My best advise, is find someone that is helpful, be honest about any patient you're not comfortable with, don't be afraid to ask questions, and just do your best :)

Is it true that a BSN will be mandatory soon?
At this point there is a lot of speculation, but I havn't heard anything official. I am a recent grad and being so young(with a lot of working years ahead of me) I went directly into my BSN program. I don't want to find myself without it in 10 years if that does happen. I would assume they would grandfather ASN nurses and LPNs in or allow a time frame for completion. Sad thing is, no one really knows. I would recommend anyone to further their education if their personal and financial life allows for it. In my opinion, having your BSN won't necessarily grant you more respect from everyone...especially MD's, but it can only help to advance your career if you so choose. There are lots of opportunities for nurses outside of bedside nursing, but most require a BSN or MSN.
