  1. Lynn, Remember some of these companies have there HUB in another city or state but if you work from home it does not matter. Cigna/Intracorp has some good home based jobs but most require some field work, they do have several office based CM jobs. They are a good company and pay well. Also look into GENEX, pay is not as good but a lot of opportunities.
  2. Alot depends on what type of Case Mangement your are pursuing. Most Case Managers are RNs who hold anywhere from Diploma, ASN, BSN, MSN an advanced degree is NOT required for all positions. Some "Case Managers" are not nurses they are masters prepared social workers, there are also LVN case managers. Often Case Manager is the term used for home health nurses. There are hospital based CM, home health CM, Insurance and Work Comp CM the list goes on. Depending on the type of CM you are pursing It could require just a couple years of general acute nursing experience. What type of Case Management are you interested in? :typing
  3. I have worked in both smoking permitted and smoke free facilities. I much prefer the smoke free facility . Normally a physician will prescribe a nicotine patch on admit and taper the patient off eventually. In the smoking facilities there seemed to be more friction, aggitation waiting on the next "smoke break" and during the breaks there were more AWOLs and altercations from people asking others for cigarettes etc...
  4. Psych hospitals love qualified people both male and female. I see more female RNs and a non written "desire" for more male aids (which have multiple titles depending on the facility or state) for shows of concern and strength. As far as restraints in a proper hospital/facility all clinical staff should have taken classes both class and hands on and passed paper and physical tests in classes such as MAB (Mastering Assaultive Behavior) PART, PART-R, ProACT, I have taken them all and there are probably others. My own opinion is I you can not safely and accurately participate in a psychiatric code whether you are male or female, short or tall, young or old, then you do not need to be working on the "floor". Remember psych patients also may have other medical conditions such as CAD, COPD, Diabetes, renal failure, cancer the list goes on so it is important that a psych nurse have a good general nursing back ground. When you review labs you better know what a K+ of 6.7 means or a blood sugar of 42 or 480 indicates etc....Often your psych patient may need to be escorted out to get chemo, dialysis, surgical procedures etc...(depending on what type facility you work in). So a well rounded RN in priceless. Ann
  5. UPDATE: Since I posted this for my friend just wanted to let everyone know she is working on contract in Hawaii currently and just finished an assignment in Alaska. She did have bad credit but that did not come in to play the facilities were interested in her experience and credentials. Just thought I would update you so it does not stop anyone from pursuing your dreams of travel or contract nursing like my friend Pat. Thanks.

  7. Are there Psychiatric Home Health nurses? I am a Psych RN and heard some companies hir Psych RNs to do home health visits on Psych patients. Does anyone know of a company that does this? Thanks:yeah:
  8. Unfortunately most contracts state you are "at will" to the hospital and they can cancel the contract "at will" however, you can not cancel your end of the contract "at will" the agency will seek legal action against you usually most contracts are biased the hospital can send you packing at anytime but if you do not like the hospital too bad you have a contract to fulfill.
  9. I am an RN and would definately be interested in 12 hour shifts. Can you give me an idea of how your interview went? What clothing is recommended? what questions or scenarios were asked of you? I have worked Psych and Forensics so I will be OK working around inmates and like OT. You can reply on this post or feel free to private message me. Thanks
  10. Thank you. Can you tell me if 12 hour shifts are available? do all new hires start on night shift? Thanks again.
  11. Has anyone worked for or know any info on the Calif Institute for Men in Chino Ca? what exams were required? polygraph? how long was the background check? what is the prison like (for those who have worked there) Thanks
  12. Thats a shame as I heard about this forum from another forum, limiting good info about other forums and nurse links is unfortunate.
  13. I was recently told by a fellow RN that often travel companies and hospitals do not only criminal background checks (which I am aware of) but also credit checks is this correct? if a RN has had late payments, foreclosure, bankrupcy does this mean they may not be extended a contract or job?

Are there any forums specific for traveling nurses that travel by RV?
