So here's my story, I would love to hear some opinions... I am a full time LPN working at a LTC facility 3-11. So while I working my normal shift yesterday, the 11-7 nurse called out. I was asked to work that shift but declined because of plans I had the next day. The mds coordinator was on call and she already worked a double. Her backup was the DON, she never returned our phone calls. None of management called back actually and no other nurses offered to work. To sum it up, I was told by the mds coordinator that I had to stay or it would be considered abandonment..so I stayed. : / How should I have handled this situation? I'm a new nurse and don't want to be walked all over...

I think you should apply as soon as you can rather than wait, you will be put on a waiting list if you don't get in the first time. Better to be on top of that list! And if you're GPA is high I wouldn't worry...do you have any nursing experience? LPN's have the choice of an accelerated track, they're put on top of the list too. Hope that helps.

Good luck! 1, Are there alot of job openings at skilled nursing facilities in that area? Is it pretty easy to get a job there? I'm not to interested in a job at a hospital. -I've seen quite a few job openings recently and a lot of them want experience..where I'm working now they're looking for lpn for ltc. 2, What would be a resonable salary to expect in that area? I'm an LPN with 3 years of experiance. -Don't quote me on this but with experience I think you could make around $18-22/hour. I know new grad nurses start around $15-17/hour. 3, What state department regulates nursing homes, and do they post the results of surveys? I like to read the surveys to make sure i don't take a job at a horrible place. In Missouri, the Department of Health and Sr. Services post the results of all state surveys and complaints. -I'd look at the VA board of nursing website. 4, Does your state utilize CMT's (Certified Medical Techs) or anything like that to pass pills. I really hate med passes. Especially the 0800 one -Not all facilities have cmt's but I have seen them... 5, Is there anything that an LPN in Virginia can't legally do? I know in some states LPN's can't do certain things. -Certain meds we can't pass but the hospital I work at I get to learn how to start IV's and push certain meds. 6, Is there anything else I should no before taking a job out there?

So, my very first interview as an LPN is this Thursday. I got my license October of this year. It's a position open on the telemetry unit at the hospital I already work at. (not as a nurse) I'm not sure what to expect. :uhoh21: What are some questions I should ask during the interview regarding telemetry?

I think you have to atleast post 15 times before you can PM? Ah. It's really annoying cause I'm pretty computer savvy... Graduation was at Heritage High. We got to do the capping and you had the choice between wearing the dress or the pants and button down shirt. I wore the dress because it's tradition. :) I'll just give you my email... Hey Stephanie! I'm having the hardest time trying to PM you...I'm obviosuly missing something. Hah. So you're already a CNA, you'll do great! Seriously, no worries. My friend in class was already an MA and she amazed me. I on the other hand had no clinical experience going into nursing school, I was a nervous wreck. But I hung in there and ended up doing well. The first week you're there you pretty much just get to know everyone... I do have a tip. Buy a Saunders NCLEX review book now. Nobody told me this and I waited till the end of the second year to get it. It would have been a huge help if I got it earlier.

Hey Steph. I just recently graduated from New Horizons. I was in the evening class. My overall experience was so-so. You definitely have to do a lot of learning on your own. The teachers pretty much just lecture. Me and my fellow classmates complained about the same thing, not enough clinical experience. We spent the majority of the time at Sentara ltc and rehab. I'm not sure who the teachers are for your first year beacuse they changed when I was there but get close to Mrs.Smith. She's a clinical instructor...she taught me a lot.
