DON after hours expectation
If that is the expectation there is no way with small children, I'll have to pass. Thank you for sharing your experience!

DON after hours expectation
I will have to look up the state law where I live but assume it would be basically the same deal. That is good advice about the algorithm, thank you. I really don't mind phone calls for simple things but being called into work for lost keys would get old..especially in the middle of the night.

DON after hours expectation
I'm with you, if the expectation is I can be called in 24/7 I will turn it down. My quality of life comes first especially with a family. I'm willing to work hard but I need to work hard at home with my family as well not just at work. There needs to be a balance. I really appreciate all of the input! It helps me get an idea of what is reasonable to expect and what isn't.

DON after hours expectation
You're right! I felt those 1a calls were unreasonable and I will make my expectations for being called very clear. I have a family and a life which I think needs to be respected. Of course I would be there if the staff was in dire straights but I don't see why I need to be called during the night for most things I could just be updated when I come in the following morning. I'm glad to know this expectation isn't unrealistic.

DON after hours expectation
Thank you! I feel the same and expect the job to have the same mentality about after hour call, I just wasn't sure if I was being unreasonable expecting not to be called unless absolutely necessary. I'm glad to know being called consistently at all hours isn't mandatory.

DON after hours expectation
Thanks, this helps a lot! I'm not so concerned with getting phone calls during the day but during the night would definitely be an issue!

DON after hours expectation
I plan to but was hoping for some insight in the mean time. Also, I'd like to know what the expectation is for other facilities. So any information on the call experience other DONs have had would be helpful which is why I post d here.

DON after hours expectation
I agree, I would not take calls at 1a for vacation time that's insane it's even happening, but I just don't know what to expect in terms of being called during off hours. I would for sure implement a charge nurse situation who would be competent to handle issues on off shifts when I wasn't there, but the whole being on call is what I guess I'm not really understanding. Am I on call 24/7 half the time with the ADON? That's a lot of call. And what am I going to be called for? If it's once in a blue moon type a thing like they are evacuating the building or something ok fine, but I'm not sure what I would be called for or how often.

DON after hours expectation
Hello, I recently interviewed for a DON position and liked the facility and position but am concerned about after hour responsibilities. I have a family and an infant, I would not be able to be called in the middle of the night. I am also typically not available weekends due to family responsibilities. I'm not saying I would never be available but by and large I would not be able to come in during off hours. So, I was wondering if anyone who works for a LTC facility could give me some insight into how often a DON is called after hours? There is an ADON at this facility who said she gets calls at 1a from staff requesting vacation days and that would just not work for me. Any insight would be appreciated, TIA :)

What course are you currently working on? Still C157 for me.
Can I ask how you prepared for the OA? I have taken the pre-assessment twice and failed both times. I am running out of time to complete this class and my OA is scheduled for tomorrow. Since I haven't successfully passed the pre-assessment I am really nervous about taking the OA. I have studied for this test 8-14 hours a day (literally, I've been studying like I've never studied before) yet keep failing. If you have any suggestions on passing the OA I'd really appreciate it.

I am trying to send them information on my true character as a nurse with my attorney's help. I hope they will reconsider and simply issue me a warning provided I agree to take some educational classes. I appriciate your input and hope this issue can reach a more favorable end. Thanks again for your opinions and advice.

I am not sure how the hospital is setting me up. I was the one who, according to IDPR, who should have known to delegate the accuchecks to the PCT even though the night nurse told me she delegated it to the night PCT and from what I was taught, that information was passed on to the day PCT in their report between the PCTs. I had two very ill pts who required my immediate attention and I failed to follow up with the accuchecks because I was very busy with my 2 very ill pts. Normally the PCTs will alert us to any abnormal vitals or blood sugars and since I was not told anything was wrong I assumed the pt was OK. Little did I know the accuchecks were not being done. It was such a crazy day and I was in the middle of a bad situation. I dont know what I can do. I tried to contact an attorney today but have not heard back yet.

I am not sure, I am a pretty new nurse. I have only been out of school a year. I have no idea how to handle something like this.
