hey there ill be done with nursing school in about 6 months and i want to start thinking of where im going to work...similarly to other new nurses i dont really care for medsurg although i can tolerate it. my biggest problem with it is that i am small and have a hard time lifting and turning all these total patients (even with the proper body mechanics) i have been working as a tech through out nursing school but at the end of a day on a medical floor for adults i am exhausted with the wear and tear it puts on my body with all the changing and turning and moving....you get the point. I recently did a rotation on a peds floor and liked it but i always thought of my self as an adult nurse, im also thinking OR, or outpatient but i dont know if thats wise as a new nurse to do? can any one give any advice?

a girl in my program was an MA for three years before she started the program with me, and she also told me that they do a lot, infact she said that they gave immunizations like the flu shot.....my opinion on that is that they definately dont know as much as an RN, because like some one said before they are simply performing a skill. one thing i had to realize about nursing now that i am almost finished with my program is that, it has a lot to do with assessments, and analyzing the patient from their vitals, to their skin, to how they tolerated a procedure, to what their economic or mental status is. U r in for a whirl wind when u start....the thing that most amazes me is that nurses are tested on everything, including communication skills! i respect MA's, and it probably is true that that clinic doesnt need an independently thinking nurse who can assess and recommend what should be done with the patient.

i agree its his choice, so in other cases when it is the family holding its different...this is him actually holding on to his own life, and his family is just making sure that he gets his wishes respected.

i am currently a nursing student who will not be graduating til 2009 and today one of my instructors told my class that there will be laws passed requiring rn's to have a bsn by 2010! It kind of annoyed me because that is only 6months after i graduate. i feel like i may be wasting my time in an adn program and should just go apply to the closest university nursing program. mind you i have an aa degree and will have over 140 credits once i finish this adn program. it just so happened that there is no university with in about an hour drive of where i live that offers an rn program so i decided to go this route and then take my time and obtain a bsn. its very discouraging to have one of your instructors tell you that you are obtaining a degree that will be obsolete 6months after you graduate? ive been looking online to see if i can find any credible articles that talk about this issue but cannot find one. does any one know any information or articles? i dont see how requiring a bsn would be possible because in florida most of the rn's graduate from community colleges. out of the three universities close to me only one of them offer a nursing program! and they do not admit that many students. does any one who makes these laws have a clue? maybe they can make a pay differential for bsn's but its not fair to not allow adn's to practice...:angryfire:idea:
