  1. In a word, NO. I happen to be atheist. I do believe one needs to respect others beliefs, but you yourself DO NOT NEED to be religious or even a theist to be a good nurse. OK, here comes the flaming....:angryfire Oh, and by the way, my being gay makes it so most Christians don't want me anyway... certainly my partner and I of over 6 years can't get married. Think church people might have something to do with that?? hmmm?? Now flame me.....

  3. What is this "calling" I keep hearing about? I believe some people just "fall into" their jobs through circumstance. Why does it have be a "higher power" that "calls" you? Sure sounds like hooey to me. I noticed that some of you seem pretty angry about those of us who are also voicing our opinion. Like I said previously, I was not picking on someone personally. Just wanted people to know that there is another side to everything! Ta ta...
  4. I do not want to judge anyone on their faith. But here goes some of my opinion. This is just my opinion, has nothing to do with anyone personally. This isn't a flame or anything.... For those very very few of us out there who are Agnostic or Atheist, what you've said about nursing being god's work is barbaric. Religion of all kinds has made the world a very bad place for a lot of people. It has caused wars, killed who knows how many millions or even billions of innocent people over the millenia. Religion is based in myth and has nothing to do with reality. It's a delusion. To say I'm doing god's work is the same to me as saying I'm doing Mohammeds (sp) work, or the fish god of some tropical voodoo god. Where do you think we might be if it wasn't for religion? I believe we would not have been held back in science and would have conquered the stars and diseases by now. When I am holding someones hand when they're dying, or taking care of someone ill in my work, I'm doing it for the patient, the family, my hospital, and for me. God has nothing to do with it for me. If my patient and the family still believes in this delusion, I will go along with them to give them comfort, but deep in my heart, I do not believe. I wanted all of you to hear that there is such a thing as an Agnostic or even Atheist nurses out there.... Are you surprised? I can bet you everything that I'm just as compassionate and as good a nurse as you bible thumpers out there.... (not flaming, just a little venting, believe in what you want, just NEVER preach to me.. )
  5. In a word, yes! I rarely get a full break. As to getting breaks like the law states, forget it! I know there are exceptions out there. Also noticed that smokers seem to get more breaks, too. (woops, there a whole other topic). My blog

Just wanted to say that some of the best nurses I have ever worked with were LPN's. In fact, where I work now, we don't use LPN's and I wish we did sometimes! With this nursing shortage, it would make sense to me to use LPN's more, not less. By the way, some of us didn't have a lot of money to continue our education. I worked up from NA, to CNA, to LPN, to RN, ADN and will probably up to BSN and even my MSN at some future date. I don't regret it at all. I feel I'm a better nurse because of it! John' blog
