All Us Washed Out,burned Out Nurses Wish We Could Retire!!!

Are there any State nurse employees out there? I work in a mental facility in Tennessee and have a few issues . Is it legal to require mandatory overtime? We are off every other weekend and one day a week. We are required to work 4 mandatory overtimes a month. We have to fill out our schedules with our MOTS on them a month in advance and have only a few days to do it in so we really don't get much time off at all and in this environment it is really needed! If you don't work the MOTS you are written up and will eventually be terminated. My other issue concerns Nurse/patient ratio. On many evenings I have been the charge nurse and given the medications. I would have no breaks. New years eve I was the only nurse with 4 techs and 24 patients, 4 of which required 1:1 observation which used the 4 techs. This left me to give meds and watch 9 constant observation patients while charting and taking care of the other patients.This is dangerous for the patients and for the staff but it goes on all the time! Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Does anyone work for the state? I am currently employed by the state of Tennessee as an RN at a mental facility. I have to say I find the work interesting to say the least. My comment is in regard to laws and how they differ for state facilities. Several nights I have worked as the only nurse on my floor with 20 Plus mental patients. New years eve I had 24 patients 4 techs and me! Night before last I worked the same and had a patient fall and end up in the hospital because I could not give meds and handle the techs and everthing else at the same time ! I know this can't be legal but I don't know who to complain to. This facility also requires mandatory overtime 4 days a month. We are already exhausted,have to work every other weekend and are harrased to work MOTS. THey have us fill out our sheduled a month in advance and put down our MOTS so legally for them we have already said we would work the MOTS when in actuallity we have no choice. Any views,comments would be appreciated as I am at a loss here.I am looking far another job.
