Can I really do this?!
Thanks for your helpful honesty! I haven't really gone to comm. college for 4 years, I have taken a couple years off in between now and the last time I went and have never taken a full time load either ( i was just kinda spacing everything out) but know now that I can't just waste my time (you're right, it's kinda a waste of my time!) hoping all the hard stuff will magically disappear and I will be able to figure everything out and know exactly what to do! Sometimes I think you have to dive in and test your strength and learn along the way. At least that's what I'm figuring out. I've been thinking about going into nursing since november and and think that I just have to go for it and give myself the chance to succeed! Thanks again:wink2:

Anyone worried about throwing up or passing out?
This is soo helpful hearing from everyone! I know I'm a squemish person and know it's something I have to desensitize myself to. It'd funny hearing about how people are squemish about mouths/ teeth because I was watching this real life medical drama show and they showed this doctor put this young girls teeth back in her mouth becasue they had fallen out due to some sort of trauma and I just about fainted just watching it! But then they were showing a heart transplant and it was absolutley nothing compared to watching the teeth! I know its just a show but its surprised me that the seemingly ungross thing can be so gross. I'm just a pre-nursing student but appreciate all this advice, it really gives hope. Also I read some where that if you cough it keeps you from gagging, because you can't cough and gag at the same time. anyone ever done that?

Can I really do this?!
I've been floating through community college for 4 years now not being able to make up my mind, and after I gave it some very long thought- i chose to pursue an associate's degree in nursing. I have a great GPA, do well in school, love learning about how the body works and really love helping people, but I still have this underlying feeling, this OMG, :eek:can I really do this?! I always thought doctors and nurses were so far above everyone, but they learned the skills and the knowledge just like any other profession right? Anyone ever feel like that and why do I feel like that?! My family is supportive, but I feel like if I got in to NS and failed- then what would I do! I guess I just can't think that way. "What you think about, you bring about." I have to think positive and know that it doesn't matter what other people think about what I'm doing. It only matters if I'm being all that God created me to be. Thanks for listening, any words of encouragment would be awesome :loveya:

Houston area- where do you work while you're in school?
Hey I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on where you worked while you were in school. Obviously, I don't have any kind of degree yet or certification, but would like to work in some sort of medical field- just to become acclimated to that type of environment. Im not in ns school yet, just pre-nurs. Any suggestions?

Microbiology FIRST EXAM (FAILED) :[
I thought I was the only one to run out of my first ap lab! :) I withdrew, took it again and got an A- and I def. failed a couple of the tests we had- it's all about how you're going to make it up, it's about all the grades as a whole, not just one test- however I am going to go back and review/ study the tests that I didn't do well on only because I'm going to have to know it for ap II and on the job. But it all depends on the teacher too, he wanted to see us do well and gave us an extra make-up quiz when we didn't do well on the first one. Anyway, it can def work out, don't give up!

How Hard Is A&P1?
I've been taking it now for a couple of weeks, so I can't say I know how hard it will be, but from what I know so far its just a lot of information and it can get complicated trying to keep it all straight in your head. Everyone told me it was a lot of new terminology and a lot of information but not necessarily difficult information to understand. And they were right so far. I'd say go for it, I havn't even taken very many science classes before this one and I'm doing okay so far. The best thing I can say is to read ahead before your semester even starts. Get the textbook and read the first couple of chapters and make notes. You dive in pretty much the first day. I'm reading ahead and not only does it keep me from being overwhelmed at the sheer number of pages I'll have to read, but it allows me to understand what the teacher is talking about during lecture, that way I'm not learning it for the first time, but the info is just being reinforced. So far its helped because I've been confident on our quizzes when alot of people are just guessing and don't really know the info. Good luck!

How Helpful was the Anatomy coloring book for you?
Wow, head start! you're going to do great! A week before my class started I read and made notes and flashcards for the first two chapters of my book, and it helped a lot because the first day of class we started doing the assignments within the book. some people didn't even have their book! I definitely recommend staying ahead!

How Helpful was the Anatomy coloring book for you?
I'm debating whether I should get the recommended materials such as the anatomy coloring book, and I was just wondering if it was very helpful or maybe not that helpful? Or maybe there was something else that was an even better studying tool?

A&P 1 Spring 08
I think we have a cadaver too, but I don't know if my teacher was joking about that or not! I know we have a cat dissection and also a dissection of a sheep's eye. I started taking this class over a year ago then dropped so all this was no surprise, and so I think I'm ready to go for it, no matter how yucky I might find it! But what helped me alot actually was the thread "So you're observing in the OR" which I think was under general nursing. I kinda got my mind wrapped around the idea that this is something I am going to have to deal with and just get over! But on that thread they mentioned something that you can pick up at a pharmacy, It's something that you put on your nose (?) and has a particular smell that lessens the smell of all the chemicals that go along with cutting people open. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? They mentioned it for nurses working in the OR but maybe it'd work for smelly cadavers too?

A&P 1 Spring 08
Good luck everyone! I start tonight!! This is my first college science/lab class, (even though I've been taking college classes for about 3 years now) and I've already been studying this entire past week, just reading through chapters one and two and making notes so I can get a head start. Making your own flashcards is a great idea! I've already started doing that as well, and I think it does help when writing it down yourself. I've been excited for my class to come, but now that its today I'm kinda nervous because I really don't know what to expect. I just have to trust myself that I can get through it! I actually kinda hope its as challenging as everyone says! I've already taken Nutrition and at first the teacher was really hard, but then he progressively got easier and easier and I ended up being really bored!

Should I take all my core classes now or just try to get in??
I may not know a whole lot yet seeing as I am just starting out, but I do know some! I'm already enrolled in a school, thank-you-very-much, I thought I wanted to be an english major, but realized how little you can do with that, so I recently started seeing where my love of sciences could get me. I have already been to their information session and know that there are only a few required courses, most of which I've taken -before you can even apply to the program which happens twice a year. I was just talking about the additional core classes that happen while you're in nursing school. I asked a counselor if I've already taken them i don't need to take them again, so I just wondered if I should go on to taking the non-nursing core classes just to maybe make my life a little easier. So I aksed here and am seeing what everyone else did too, and so far input has been very enlightening! I just didn't really appreciate that comment about me not knowing anything. I do appreciate everyone's advice!
