Noncompliant Bhutanese patients
Bhutanese refugees like most Asians tend to be detailed in their explanation hoping to give an in depth description. You will find them talking in long sentences.Often it ends up being non specific for the provider who wants a yes/no answer. Re: food, vegetables aside, their staple diet is mainly inclusive of carb enriched products like rice, potatoes, bread. So, it can be quite challenging to modify this since this is the only type of food they've been used to their entire life. However, they are very open to changes and if educated properly, they may heed to your advice. What you need is a good interpreter by which I mean, someone who understands the cultural nuances and not just speak the language. Many Bhutanese patients have confided to me about how they don't understand some interpreters. Not all Bhutanese people speak Indian(Hindi) and often they are given Hindi interpreters. So, getting a Nepali interpreter would be more helpful. Life for many Bhutanese refugees starts early on.They get married early, have kids early on .So in their 50s,most of them are already grannies/grandpas.So that psychologically may make them feel older. Also, in the rough terrains w/ hard labor, you tend to age faster.Things like using SPF sunscreen, anti aging tx are considered a luxury. Most elderly Bhutanese refugees have never been to school. So, that answers why they wouldn't know how to sign. They put a lot of faith into the provider's hands like 'you know it all and we're just lay men/women' and will generally not question your judgement. Hope that was helpful!

Evaluating a job offer. What do you think? Should I wait or take it?
PROS: Tinge of public health get to work w/ the underserved population. multispecialty experience(OB/GYN,Pediatrics,Adult Medicine,Psychiatry) More autonomy feel it works well w/ my goals as a FNP or a MidWife CONS: Not a hospital job. not sure if it can stand up to a med surg hospital experience should i decide i want to work in a hospital later. no tuition reimbursement/stipends seems like health benefit isn't the full coverage type. pay is nothing compared to the relocation, buying a car and other expenses i'll have to incur.Low twenty'z I have an interview lined up at a hospital in Jan.It will require me to relocate too but the med surg experience serves as a secure solace.I know it is going to be a long shot since i haven't even interviewed yet.I want to wait for it though .So, I have two options to compare but am not sure if holding out for that is going to be too long a wait if an offer is made from this job I've already interviewed for.

Getting a job out of state?
All LPNs take one standard test regardless of which state they are in. So,when you get your MS LPN license and want to work in another state, unless it is a compact state, you have to apply to that state's board of nursing for a reciprocity of license. the details will be provided on their BON website.hope this helps.

new grad salary Question
thank you all for taking time to reply to my question. I'm looking for an experience more than anything at this point but I have to consider my family as well and they want me to ask this Question so we can decide if it is worth travelling even for the interview. @diane227 :They haven't quoted any salary but it is a federally qualified place. It isn't in the city.Does anyone know what the general salary for a new grad in upstate NY is like?

new grad salary Question
If I am hired, it would be more than a job but relocation to consider. So, do you think it is ok to ask what my salary range will be before I travel > 300 miles for the final interview or is that considered a 'no no'until an offer is made?

Job Hopping as a new grad
As a new grad , I have been applying to different places for jobs. Fortunately, I have heard back from a few. Job A is at a hospital and Job B is in an esthetic clinic. I value both these experiences but prefer Job A over B for some reasons. I feel a hospital experience will be better for me as a new grad. However the interview dates for Job A is only in Jan and Job B wants to interview me by next week. An interview doesn't guarantee a job but if any offer does come by, I will be hired first by Job B than Job A due to the timeline. The locations of both these jobs are way out of place .so, doing PT at one place and trying to work w/ other option doesn't exist either. I could take Job B ,work there and then leave it if Job A comes, but I feel that would be a disservice to Job B. Leaving so soon! What is the minimum time to work at your 1st job before hopping?Any suggestions coz I will probably run into this situation if things go well at the coming interview?

question for an experienced nurse.
hi there, i am a new grad RN w/ a question re:starting out my new job. I recently applied and got a job @ a home care agency.Unfortunately, they don't offer any training :-( So, I am pretty much on my own. However, I don't have to care for more than 1 patient a day.I am w/ the same person the entire shift. Ideally, I know it isn't the best place for a new grad like me to start my career. However, considering the market receptiveness to new grads, I feel a start is better than no start. So, in choosing my cases, what do you suggest I look for? What to steer away from? I'm scared like any new grad of doing something so simple yet silly that I could easily lose my hard earned license. any help?

Saunders 2010 or Kaplan's RN Course Book
kaplan was giving out their course book for free in august on itunes. not sure if they still do. another way to compare would be to borrow the book from your public library and see if the material is interesting to keep you going.the edition may be different but the writing style is pretty much the same.

RN's in dr. offices
i recently saw an ad for a MA and the responsibilities listed got me baffled. I seriously thought this should have been an ad for a RN. a few of them included - iv placement, obtain anesthesia consent from pt by having read ,understand and signed. -observe adverse reactions, warning physician. -remove pt's iv prior to departure and qualification req'd was HS or equivalent MA training w/ experience. even as RNs,we have been taught to only witness consents and here the MA does it all. LOL.Seriously, is this even legal?

Uncertain New York Hourly Wage
30-35 isn't unrealistic. However, there isn't a fixed hourly wage anyone hear can tell you of.I have seen rates as low as early twenties to high early fifties in NYC.Depends what type of employer you work for e.g agencies, LTC, hospitals etc. A good idea would be to look at the overall compensation package than just the hourly amount. As a new grad, maybe hospitals give you BSN differential but i don't know of other places that offer extra for it. very few maybe. Elsewhere, it is the experience that makes the diff.

New grad:Help with some pointers/clarification pls.
So I passed my NCLEX beginning of Sept and started my job search soon after.2 months down,I don't have a RN job as yet.Realize I need some redirection. Please correct me if I am wrong. As a new grad RN, I know the most ideal place to start is considered to be a hospital. Then comes a LTC or Nursing homes. My understanding is that the above places require one to care for a range of pts and this helps build a good Med/Surg foundation. For the moment,I haven't been lucky with the few hospitals,LTC or Nursing homes I have applied to and w/some hospitals, I don't even qualify considering the experience/education req. as listed by the ad. What's next? Doctor's clinic? I 've applied to a few without any avail. The search still continues. Agencies? 1.Few I've come across say they can't take me since I don't have any experience.Namely the big name agencies that also offer good comprehensive benefits. 2.Few are ready to call me over. They make me fill 20 or more pgs of application package.ok w/ new grads. They claim to provide placement in a hospital/LTC position but am scared if they send me to a hospital/LTC as an agency nurse, what it is going to be like? I'll be one unfamiliar nurse in a setting where I'll be expected to function like a regular for one shift. How will I manage so many pts because no body is going to care I'm a new grad there.Sounds too risky! 3.Agency taking new grads for homecare nursing position.Atleast w/ this,I know I have one pt to take care of at a time and feel more comfortable. If the case isn't too complicated,I could manage it even as a new grad provided I'm giving a brief overview.I've worked as a HHA in the past. 4.Agencies that hire per diem for wellness/flu shot clinics.I guess I'm already late for this since season for giving shots is almost over! They run Sept through November? Lastly Volunteering. All the list of positions I have checked into don't give any hands on practice to work like nurse. They are mostly for greeters, companions, etc.Networking and personal gratification aside, I wonder if they will be of any use ? Does anyone know how to get into a staffing pool for med/surg via some sort of training?Any hospitals in NYC? Thanks for reading. Please feel free to add to the list/warn me about anything.

Suny Delhi RN to BSN 1yr online
hi ! I am a recent ADN grad also looking at SUNY Delhi for my BSN. I met the school reps at a career fair I recently attended .They gave me a handout w/ course descriptions(prolly can find them online too).Few of them are in bold letters and these require clinical. The lady said I could choose which clinical site I want to attend and if approved by the faculty, the practicums can be done there. If you are a RN already, maybe you can consider your workplace. However,I am a new grad w/ no RN job as yet.So, I was confused on how I could get someone to agree me to give a clinical ok at their facility. That's been my take.

HELP! New grad 1st interview @ elmhurst
hi all. i'm also a new grad job hunting. Planning of going back for my BSN too considering the job market. @ orgo geek: Getting an interview is a great stepping stone. It helps you understand the resume game a lil more knowing how the rest of us and our resumes go down the bin/never get interview calls.I wish you all the luck in your next search. Btw,did you have any previous nursing related experience?I live very close to Elmhurst and would love to work there. I checked the HHC website and see so many RN job postings but wonder whether I have to write a cover letter for each of them? May sound like a stupid question but that is where I am in the application process.

Suggest a RN-BSN school for this new grad
Hi all. I'm a new grad RN planning to go back to school for my BSN sometime in Spring 2011. When I was in nursing school, I envisioned going to Hunter(#1 Choice), Downstate or Stony Brook. However since Hunter suspended its RN-BSN program until 2012,hear not so good feedbacks on Downstate and Stony Brook Distant program preferably requires 1 year nursing experience to get those advanced credits(I don't have a job yet),I'm looking at SUNY Delhi Online. If you all could pls share your thoughts about the program or suggest any good,affordable,RN-BSN programs Online that have real ground campus. thanks.
