  1. I'm taking chemistry 115, and need some help on this question. The daily dose of ampicillin for the treatment of an ear infection is 115mg ampicillin per kilogram of body weight (115mg/kg), What is the daily dose for a 27lb child? So far I've done this, but am not sure if its the right answer. And significant figures matter. 27lb x 1kg = 12kg x 115mg = 1380 mg -------- 2.20lb I set it up in a conversion factor, that 1kg equals 2.20lbs, and the lbs symbols cancel each other out, so I end up taking 27 divided by 2.20 and I get 12 kg and since its 115mg per every kg I took 12kg multiple 115mg and got 1380 mg as the dose for a 27lb child. I need to remember to use significant figures too ....Am I right???
  2. No and that is exactly why I am not sure I am the person to be hands on with someone that may be critically ill. I respect nurses and healthcare providers very much for all that they do, and through my hospital stays have treated me very well. My thing is I maybe don't feel confident enough to be at bedside with an ill person making the calls on their health, and my low interest I have in it. Criminal justice just seems to catch my eye more, I have been pushed a lot to stay with nursing because my sister is into it. I know dealing with criminals some who may be more out of control than others will be a challenge, but I think I am better at talking to someone and providing guidance before something bad happens or someone gets hurt, rather than watching over someone who may need emergency care, or even if I mess up the care directly. Another problem is my confidence in that. I'm glad I started up this thread, as I am realizing more things already that go along with my 'no interest'. I appreciate all the advice and views.:)
  3. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate it. :)
  4. See, I find no interest in the human body. Which may be a big sign to get out now. When I was pregnant I was all into learning about fetal development, birthing, defects, etc. etc. But of course I was pregnant too and just about every expecting mother does that. I almost feel as if another persons life and health on my hands is way too much responsibility. I applied for a job as a CNA at the local hospital, and had an interview. I was to call back with my clinical instructors name but am not now that my boyfriend is moving to first shift and the hospital only had second shift availabilities. But on top of that I was going to be a CNA on the surgical unit or intermediate care, and monitor heart monitors and bath people that have come out of surgery or watch over patients with cardiac problems. I felt overwhelmed from the interview.
  5. Hi I had this same question as well. My RN instructor for my CNA class told us the same thing that the nurses board of america (or whatever it is really called, I am unsure, sorry) is trying to make a clear law for every place that there will be clear and specific things that each certified or degreed person can do . Differentiating from CNA to LPN to RN. My instructor told me that hospitals are replacing RNS with LPNS for cheaper pay, and training them to do the same responsibilities because it is confusing from each state. Even some CNAS are asked to do some LPN work when they weren't certified to do so in class. My instructor said to watch that and make sure you have been trained to do so and refuse if not. She also said RNs aren't going to be completely replaced, but fewer will be needed on each floor. I've also read that the burnout rate on RNs is 5-10 years. I haven't done a lot of research it's just what I have been told, so don't take anything to heart that I said.
  6. I have been wanting to be a nurse for a couple years now. But I keep losing interest in it. I was in a microbiology class and mathematic statistics class for prerequisites but I don't find either of them interesting. I don't find science interesting at all, and I know that is a big part in nursing. My question is: Some of you going or have gone and become a nurse, did you find your pre-req classes interesting? And willing to want to learn and get there and actually retain the information that they tell you? I am thinking about switching my major to Criminal Justice, and going for a probation officer position. I have almost all the pre-reqs except for about five classes for the criminal justice transfer to get a degree, and there isn't any science but two less complex science class requirements. I also feel that the nursing schools are harder to get into, and that my grades won't make it in, and that I'll be on a waiting list for a long time. The pay looks great for nursing, but I don't know if I have it in my to take on these science classes, and anatomy classes. I have been out of highschool for four years but I can't keep my concentration on nursing. I almost feel like I am burned out on trying to get there. Just looking for some advice or comments.
  7. I talked to the admissions and vice president today and found out that the minimester, which is a class taken in two weeks crammed, rather than in 8 or 12 weeks, will not help my GPA if I am to apply for the nursing program by February 1, 2008. Because the new GPA won't post until after Feb. 1. I also found out that my A in medical terminology from this fall semester, hasn't been put onto my unofficial transcript, and that it might make a difference.:uhoh21: Also, I have found a petition for a grade W which means you don't have any points lost or added, and that you dropped from the class not late. You get a big fat F if you drop it late. That is what happened to me, I never even went to these classes, but was involved in an accident, and do have ER documentation and Doctor documentation for that to try and petition those two F's and get them taken from my GPA. My problem is because these two classes that got the late withdrawal F's were in Fall of '06 it has been several semesters since I could of wrote in for a petition. Now I am not sure what I should say my excuse is for not turning in an petition earlier.??? The truth is I just didn't know you could do that! No petitions without professional documentation, or if they are not by illness, death, illness in family, death in family, or accident, will not be considered. I have that part covered, I was in an accident and it's documented. But it says no petition will be considered if you forgot about it, or was immature. I assume that means your reason on the petition and not the reason why I am just now doing this. Should I just say that I wasn't aware of a petition for a W grade? Because I do have an explanation on the petition, my accident and doctor documentation and hospital records. Sorry for being confusing.
  8. What is that?
  9. Hi I am going to apply to a community college's registered nursing program and graduate with an associate degree from it. I am very afraid I am not going to make it into the program though because so many people apply to get in. You must have a 2.5 GPA to get in, and I have a 2.4 GPA. What is hurting me is several years ago, I was going to take paralegal classes, well my counselor had me signed up for two classes, and I never dropped out of them, so I got stuck with a big fat F on both classes. Is there anything I can do to get those two grades dropped? I dont even need them for my program but they are really hurting my GPA. I talked to someone about it a long time ago and they said for me to drop them I would need documentation I was sick or something. I don't even remember what happened that year. Also I wanted to know if I took a minimeste that starts next week, Ace it, if it will be enough to change my GPA from a 2.4 to a 2.5, the nursing application has to be in by February 2, 2008.
  10. Id like to become an lactation consultant, but can I do this with my LPN? Anybody know? Thanks.
  11. Some background...I am going to school for my LPN. I wanted to do RN, but after becoming pregnant, and being in need of money sooner, I don't want to risk failing out of a RN program, when I could get my LPN sooner. I have to take one pre-req next semester and then my biology pre-req in the summer, and hopefully be accepted into the program for Fall '08. I have however taken all but two pre reqs for RN program, but the RN program would be harder than LPN and also three or four more classes longer. I do plan to go back for my RN down the road. Okay to my main question. I don't want to work in a hospital, I want to work in a private practice, particularly for a gynecology or womens health. Am I more likely to be hired as an LPN to work in a private practice rather than a RN being hired into a private practice?
